For most Windows 11 home PCs, start with the protection already included: Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Security. A paid antivirus suite is optional, not an automatic upgrade. Consider one when it provides specific features, device coverage, or management you actually need—and compare recent independent test results and the plan’s terms before choosing.
Check what Windows already protects
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is included with Windows 11. Microsoft describes it as providing real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, and cloud-delivered protection, with updates downloaded automatically. If another antivirus app is installed and turned on, Defender turns off automatically; uninstalling that app turns Defender back on. See Microsoft’s Windows security documentation.

Windows protection also extends beyond antivirus scanning. Microsoft documents SmartScreen protections against phishing and malicious sites, apps, and downloads, as well as network protection that can block access from third-party browsers and other processes. Windows Security support explains the built-in protections.
Controlled Folder Access can help protect files from ransomware by preventing unauthorized apps from changing files in protected folders. Microsoft says security-intelligence updates are delivered through Windows Update. Check the feature and update status in Windows Security; avoid adding exclusions casually, because excluded files or processes are not scanned by Defender’s real-time protection and may leave the device or data vulnerable. Smart App Control is not available as an on/off setting on every existing Windows 11 installation. Microsoft says it is intended for new Windows 11 installs and may not be enabled on a device that was already running Windows when it was updated. Decide whether a paid suite solves a real need
A third-party suite can make sense if its selected plan adds capabilities you want, covers other devices you use, or offers a management experience you prefer. Features such as parental controls, a VPN, a password manager, or identity monitoring are not guaranteed across every product or plan. Confirm what is included in the specific plan, for your region and devices, rather than relying on a product name or a general feature list.

Do not install multiple active antivirus products as a default strategy. Windows changes Defender’s active state when another antivirus app is turned on. If you install a suite, check Windows Security afterward to confirm which provider is active.

Use independent test results as evidence, not a verdict
Test scores can help compare products, but the result belongs to a particular lab, period, configuration, and method. No single round establishes a universal winner.

AV-TEST: Windows 11 home-user results for November–December 2025
AV-TEST evaluated 15 products using default settings and current public versions. Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 received 6/6 points in each of protection, performance, and usability—18/18 points, the maximum in the lab’s three-category system. Bitdefender Total Security, McAfee Total Protection, Norton 360, and several other products also received 6/6 in all three categories. AV-Comparatives: real-world protection, February–May 2026
In a test covering 400 cases, AV-Comparatives reported protection rates of 99.5% for Bitdefender, 99.3% for Avast, AVG, and Norton, and 99.0% for Microsoft; the reported range across tested products was 99.8% to 92.0%. These percentages describe the lab’s test set and period. They are not the probability that a particular person will be protected in ordinary use. Check the date and scope of newer rounds
AV-TEST’s May–June 2026 home-user round evaluated 16 products on Windows 11 Professional (English), 64-bit, using current public versions and default settings, with updates and cloud queries allowed. That establishes the test scope, not a particular product score. Check the product-level report before using it to compare options: AV-TEST’s Microsoft Defender May–June 2026 report.

- Open Windows Security. Check the antivirus provider and protection status rather than assuming the PC lacks antivirus.
- Review the Windows baseline. Keep Windows and security intelligence updated, and check SmartScreen and ransomware-related settings that matter to your use.
- Write down the gap you want to fill. Examples might be protection for other devices, a particular parental-control feature, or a preferred way to manage security. If you cannot identify a specific need, do not assume a paid suite is necessary.
- Compare recent independent results. Read protection, performance, and usability separately, and note the date, product version, and test conditions.
- Verify the exact plan and terms. Confirm device limits, operating-system support, included tools, price after any introductory period, renewal, and cancellation terms for your region.
- After installing a suite, check Windows Security again. Confirm which antivirus provider is active and that protection is on.
Bottom line
Windows 11 already includes Defender and additional security features, so a separate antivirus suite is a choice rather than a requirement for every home PC. Pay for one when its verified features, coverage, or management fit a clear need; use independent, dated test results to inform the comparison, not to treat any product as a guaranteed winner.
