How to Choose Antivirus Protection for Your Devices

Choose antivirus protection separately for each platform. Check update support and built-in defenses, compare recent platform-matched tests, and add a third-party suite only for a specific need.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose antivirus protection separately for each device and operating system. First confirm that the operating system still receives security updates and learn what protection it already includes. Then compare recent independent test results for that same platform, weighing protection, performance, and usability separately. Add a third-party product when it meets a specific need—not simply because a universal “best antivirus” label says to.

Start with the device and its operating system

Antivirus is not a single decision for a household. A Windows test result does not tell you how a product performs on a Mac or Android phone; the platforms have different built-in defenses and require platform-specific testing. Make an inventory of your devices before comparing products: record each device, its operating system and version, and whether it continues to receive security updates.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Update support matters because antivirus is only one part of device security. If a device or operating system no longer receives security updates, installing an antivirus product does not establish that the rest of the system is protected. The sources cited here do not determine the support status of any particular reader’s device or OS version, so check that status for each device using its manufacturer’s current information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each entry in your inventory, note the built-in protections and any gap you actually want to fill. A household with Windows PCs, Macs, and Android phones should evaluate each platform on its own terms rather than assuming that one subscription, score, or recommendation applies to all of them.

Make a short device inventory

  • Write down every computer, phone, or tablet you want to protect.
  • Record its operating system and version, then check whether it still receives security updates.
  • Identify the platform’s built-in security tools before installing anything else.
  • List the additional protection or management feature you want, if any.

Decide what problem additional protection should solve

“More antivirus” is not a useful goal by itself. Be specific about the gap you are trying to address: malware detection, potentially unwanted applications, malicious or phishing sites, ransomware-related safeguards, family controls, or a way to manage protection across a household’s devices. A product is worth considering when its supported platform and included features address that need.

Start by checking what the operating system already provides. Windows documents several layers of protection, while Apple and Google describe built-in defenses for macOS and Android. Those protections are relevant to the decision, but their existence alone does not prove that they meet every user’s needs. Conversely, a long list of features in a paid bundle does not make that bundle necessary if you will not use them.

Write down the feature you need before looking at product names. For instance, if your question is about malicious websites, look for evidence that the product covers that kind of threat on your platform—not merely a high overall score. If your concern is household-wide visibility or family controls, verify that those features are included for the devices you own. Avoid paying for extras simply because they are grouped with antivirus.

How to compare antivirus products fairly

Use independent test results for the same operating system and, where possible, the most recent available test period. A score is evidence about the product version and conditions that were tested; it is not a guarantee about future protection. A test on one platform cannot establish performance on another.

Read the test’s scope before interpreting its scores. Check the operating system, product version, test dates, threat scenarios or samples, and whether the products were assessed using default settings. Then compare the dimensions separately instead of treating a single total or “best” label as the whole answer.

Protection, performance, and usability are different questions

  • Protection: How did the product handle the threats in the test? This is the most direct measure of detection and defense in those particular test conditions.
  • Performance: What effect did the product have on normal device use in the test? A strong protection result does not by itself answer whether the product adds noticeable system impact.
  • Usability: How did the product perform on the test’s usability measure? This is a separate category, not a substitute for protection results.

Compare products within the same report and category. Do not compare a Windows protection score with a macOS result as if the test conditions were interchangeable. If a product’s score changed between reports, check whether the versions, test window, platform, or conditions also changed before drawing a conclusion.

A maximum score is useful evidence, but it should not end the decision. Ask what the report actually tested and whether that matches your intended use. A product’s strong result in one category does not answer questions about supported devices, household controls, subscription terms, or privacy practices. Likewise, a result from one period cannot promise how a later product version will perform.

What the November–December 2025 Windows 11 test shows

AV-TEST’s home-user test for Windows 11 assessed 15 security products in November–December 2025 using current public versions and realistic threat scenarios. It reported protection, performance, and usability separately, with a maximum of 6 points in each category and 18 points overall. In that specific test, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0, Norton 360 25.10 & 25.11, and McAfee Total Protection 1.33 each received 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. See AV-TEST’s Windows 11 December 2025 results.

These results describe that test window; they are not October 2026 results or a promise about later versions. The fact that several products earned the same maximum scores also means the listed scores alone do not distinguish them for every buyer. Use the report to assess tested performance, then consider your platform, specific feature needs, supported devices, and current terms separately.

Find the report for your platform

AV-TEST’s home-user results index lists separate testing for Windows, macOS, and Android. Use the matching platform’s page when comparing products for a particular device, and examine the date and scope of the individual report. Open AV-TEST’s home-user test index. The index is a starting point, not a reason to treat one lab’s score as a guarantee of protection in every situation.

What protection is already built into each platform?

Windows: begin with Microsoft Defender Antivirus

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft describes real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, cloud-delivered, and potentially unwanted application protections. Its Windows 11 security documentation also covers Network protection, tamper protection, and Controlled Folder Access. Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ and the Windows 11 security book section on virus and threat protection explain these protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those built-in capabilities make Defender a sensible starting point, not a universal verdict that every user has identical needs. Compare it with third-party products using a recent Windows test and the same decision criteria. In the November–December 2025 AV-TEST Windows 11 home-user test, Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 earned 6/6 in each of the three reported categories; that result belongs to that product version and test period, not to every Defender configuration or future release.

macOS: consider Apple’s layered defenses

macOS includes XProtect, which Apple describes as built-in antivirus technology for signature-based detection and removal of malware. Apple also describes Gatekeeper and notarization as part of a layered approach that helps prevent malware from launching, block known malware, and remediate infections. Apple’s macOS malware-protection documentation says XProtect signatures update automatically and that macOS checks apps at first launch, after an app changes, and when XProtect signatures are updated. Apple also documents behavioral detection and remediation functions.

This is a reason not to assume that every Mac owner must buy a separate antivirus product. It is not evidence that Apple’s protections are sufficient for every person, use case, or threat model. If you are considering another product, compare results from a macOS test rather than relying on its Windows scores, and identify the specific gap you expect the product to address.

Android: check Play Protect and update status

Google describes Play Protect as built-in Android malware defense. It automatically scans apps daily, checks installation risk, and combines on-device capabilities with cloud-connected capabilities and updates. Google says Play Protect scans 200 billion Android apps daily; that figure is a Google-published claim in its documentation, not an independently verified measurement here. Google’s Play Protect documentation explains the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play Protect does not establish that every Android device receives timely operating-system security updates, nor does it establish that every optional security feature is covered. Check the update status of the specific device, then use current Android-specific independent test results if you are comparing third-party apps.

iPhone and iPad: do not infer from other platforms

The Windows, macOS, and Android information above does not establish whether an iPhone or iPad needs a third-party antivirus app or what such apps can do on iOS or iPadOS. Do not transfer a Windows, Mac, or Android conclusion to Apple’s mobile platforms. Check current iOS and iPadOS security documentation and the scope of any app you are considering before making a platform-specific decision.

Install without creating a conflict

On Windows, do not run multiple real-time antivirus or antispyware products simultaneously. Microsoft warns that doing so can affect performance and cause update or installation errors. Its FAQ explains that Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turns back on when that app is uninstalled. Microsoft also cautions that turning Defender off without another security product leaves the device vulnerable.

  1. Choose one real-time product for Windows. Decide whether to keep Defender or install a third-party product that addresses a defined need.
  2. Follow the selected product’s installation instructions. Do not try to keep two always-on antivirus products active as a precaution.
  3. Check protection status after installation. Confirm that the chosen product is active and that Windows reports a healthy protection status.
  4. If you remove the third-party product, verify the handoff. Microsoft says Defender turns back on after the other antivirus app is uninstalled; check that protection is active rather than assuming the transition completed.

Microsoft distinguishes always-on products from its on-demand Safety Scanner and Defender Offline scanners. Because those scanners run only when requested or scheduled, Microsoft says they can be used alongside real-time security software. See Microsoft’s guidance on using security products together.

Check the practical terms before paying

A lab score cannot tell you whether a subscription fits your household or whether its terms are acceptable. Before buying, verify the current vendor information for your own country and devices; terms and product details can change. Check:

  • Platform support: Does the product support the operating systems and versions on the devices you need to protect?
  • Device count: How many devices are included, and does that number cover your intended use?
  • Included features: Are the protections or extras you care about actually part of the plan being offered?
  • Renewal terms: What happens at renewal, and what recurring charges or changes apply?
  • Privacy and data practices: What information does the provider collect and how does it describe using that data?
  • Cancellation: Can you find and understand the current cancellation process before subscribing?

These are separate questions from malware detection. A product may perform well in a test and still be a poor fit if it does not support your devices, lacks a feature you need, or has terms you do not want. Conversely, a bundle’s extra tools should not be treated as a benefit unless they solve a real problem for you.

Do not assume that a plan’s device allowance means every device in your home is covered: check the supported platform and OS version for each one. If you need coverage across several platforms, confirm that the specific subscription includes those versions rather than relying on a general claim that it protects multiple devices. Compare the plan’s actual features and current terms with the gap you identified; a higher price or larger bundle does not establish a better match.

A practical decision path

  1. Inventory and update-check. List each device and operating system, then confirm that the system still receives security updates.
  2. Identify built-in protection. Start with Defender on Windows, Apple’s documented macOS defenses, or Play Protect on Android.
  3. Name the gap. Write down the specific protection or household feature you want beyond the built-in option.
  4. Read a platform-matched independent test. Check its date, product version, scope, and separate protection, performance, and usability results.
  5. Compare practical fit. Verify platform support, device count, included features, privacy practices, renewal terms, and cancellation details.
  6. Install carefully and verify status. On Windows, keep only one real-time antivirus product active and confirm that protection is healthy after installation or removal.

If no concrete gap emerges, do not buy a suite merely to accumulate features. Keep the operating system’s built-in protection active, check that the device remains supported, and revisit the decision when your devices, needs, or the available platform-specific test results change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need antivirus on my computer?

It depends on the computer’s operating system, update support, built-in defenses, and the specific gap you want to address. Start by checking whether the system still receives security updates and what protection it already includes. Then compare independent results for that platform if you need a third-party product; a test for another operating system does not answer the question.

Is Windows Defender enough?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, with protections including real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, cloud-delivered, and potentially unwanted application defenses. In AV-TEST’s November–December 2025 Windows 11 home-user test, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 received 6/6 in protection, performance, and usability. That result applies to that version and test period; it does not establish that Defender is the right answer for every user or future configuration. Consider whether you have a concrete need beyond its built-in protections.

Does a Mac need antivirus?

macOS includes XProtect, and Apple describes it alongside Gatekeeper and notarization as part of layered malware defenses. XProtect signatures update automatically, and macOS checks apps at first launch, after an app changes, and when signatures update. This means a separate product is not automatically necessary for every Mac owner, but the built-in tools are not proof that they meet every person’s needs. Compare current macOS-specific test results if considering another product.

Do Android phones need antivirus?

Google describes Play Protect as built-in Android malware defense that scans apps daily, checks installation risk, and uses on-device and cloud-connected capabilities. That does not establish that every Android phone receives timely operating-system security updates or that all optional security features are covered. Check the update status of your particular device and use Android-specific independent tests when comparing additional apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I compare antivirus software?

Choose the report for the same platform and the most recent available period. Check the operating system, product version, dates, scenarios or samples, and whether default settings were used. Compare protection, performance, and usability separately: AV-TEST scores each category out of six in its cited Windows 11 test, for up to 18 points overall. A score describes tested conditions, not guaranteed future protection, and does not cover subscription terms or every feature you may need.

Can I run two antivirus programs at once on Windows?

Microsoft recommends against running multiple real-time antivirus or antispyware products simultaneously because they can affect performance and cause update or installation errors. Defender turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turns back on when it is removed. Microsoft says its on-demand Safety Scanner and Defender Offline scanners can be used alongside real-time security software because they run only when requested or scheduled.

The Bottom Line

Choose protection by device and operating system: verify update support, understand the built-in defenses, and compare recent platform-matched tests. Add a third-party suite only for a defined need, check its current terms, and on Windows keep only one real-time antivirus product active.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
