For a quick look at a saved local HTML file, start with VS Code’s built-in Integrated Browser. Choose an extension when you need a local development server, automatic reload, or a particular editor workflow. The right choice depends on where your files live, how their assets are served, and whether the page needs a real backend or browser APIs.
Choose based on what the project needs
Preview tools can open a file directly, serve a project directory, or display a page in an embedded webview or an external browser. Before installing one, check these practical differences:

- Input scope: Does it open one local file, serve a workspace folder, or connect to an app server that is already running? VS Code’s direct integrated-browser file actions require a local
file://resource. - Reload behavior: Is refresh manual, triggered when you save, or automatic as files change?
- Asset paths: Does it serve CSS, scripts, images, and fonts relative to the project in the way your page expects?
- Preview location: Do you need a tab inside the editor, or will the Integrated Browser or an external browser work?
- Runtime requirements: Does the page depend on a backend, or browser APIs that an embedded webview might restrict?
- Compatibility and trust: Check the extension’s current VS Code version requirement and preview only code you trust.
Microsoft documents its Live Preview extension as a local development server with live reload. It is a reasonable option to evaluate if you need those behaviors. Marketplace descriptions explain what their publishers claim; they are not independent performance tests.
Open a local HTML file in VS Code’s Integrated Browser
The built-in option is the simplest starting point when you want to inspect a saved local page without installing an extension. Microsoft describes the Integrated Browser as a way to open and interact with web pages inside VS Code: Integrated Browser documentation.

- Open a local
.htmlor.htmfile in the Explorer or editor. - Right-click the file in Explorer or its editor tab and select Open in Integrated Browser. You can also use the globe button in the editor toolbar.
- Inspect the page in the browser view. Edit and save the file, then refresh the preview if needed.
These direct file-opening actions require a local file:// URL. They are unavailable for remote or virtual workspace resources. Microsoft’s documentation describes remote workspace browsing as a preview feature that may change; check its current status and limitations in the official documentation.
Use Microsoft Live Preview for a server-and-reload workflow
If you want a local development server and live reload, evaluate Microsoft’s Live Preview extension. Microsoft’s tutorial documents opening an HTML file and choosing Show Preview: Get started with Visual Studio Code.

- In VS Code, open the Extensions view and install the Microsoft-published Live Preview extension.
- Open the HTML file you want to view.
- Right-click in the editor and select Show Preview.
- Change and save the page, then confirm that the preview reloads as expected for your workflow.
For project-relative assets, check that the file is within the served workspace root. The extension’s documentation notes that files outside the server root can have incorrect relative links. Confirm the current behavior and setup in the extension’s listing before relying on it for a project.

Check alternatives against their current listings
Extensions with similar names can differ in rendering method, reload behavior, asset handling, and preview location. For example, the Preview HTML listing describes a webview, a base URL, and scoped access to webview resources. The HTML Previewer 2.0 listing says its webview restricts some browser APIs, does not perform server-side rendering, and allows remote script and stylesheet URLs subject to the webview Content Security Policy. These descriptions apply to those listings, not to every preview extension.

Before installing an alternative, read its current marketplace listing for the publisher and extension identity, supported VS Code version, reload triggers, workspace scope, asset handling, and stated limitations. One reviewed listing specified VS Code 1.96 or later, but that is a listing-specific requirement that can change—not a universal VS Code preview requirement.
Know when a preview is not enough
- Backend-dependent pages: A static file preview does not run server-side code. Start the project’s actual server and preview the served page when you need to test routes, templates, APIs, or server-rendered output.
- Browser API differences: An embedded webview may restrict APIs that a regular browser supports. Test in the actual browser and runtime if the application relies on those capabilities.
- Remote or virtual workspaces: VS Code’s direct integrated-browser file actions do not open remote or virtual workspace resources. Use a workflow appropriate to the workspace and verify its current behavior.
- Untrusted files: HTML and JavaScript execute in a browser context. Preview only code you trust, and do not assume an extension’s server or webview makes arbitrary files safe.
Troubleshoot common preview problems
- The integrated-browser action is missing or does nothing: Confirm the file is local and opens through a
file://URL. The direct file actions do not support remote or virtual workspace resources. - CSS, images, or scripts fail to load: Check whether the preview is serving the project root your relative paths assume. For a server-based extension, keep the page inside the served workspace scope or adjust the base path.
- Changes do not appear: Check whether the selected workflow reloads on save or on file changes. If it does not, refresh manually or choose a tool whose documented reload behavior matches your needs.
- A feature behaves differently than in a browser: The preview may be an embedded webview with API restrictions, or it may not run the application server. Test the application in its actual browser and runtime.
- An extension will not install: Check its current VS Code compatibility requirement and confirm you selected the intended publisher and extension listing.
