On a managed Windows computer, Selenium can drive current Chromium-based Microsoft Edge only if your organization permits WebDriver automation. Use Selenium 4 with Microsoft Edge WebDriver (msedgedriver), match the driver’s major version to Edge, and check the organization’s policy before changing your test code. If policy blocks WebDriver, ask IT for an approved exception or test environment; headless mode is not a policy bypass.
Check whether the machine permits Edge automation
First confirm that you are automating current Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, rather than legacy EdgeHTML. Then ask your administrator whether WebDriver automation is allowed on the workstation. Edge WebDriver relies on Edge DevTools, so an organization-managed policy can prevent it from starting even when Selenium and the driver are installed correctly.
Microsoft documents that DeveloperToolsAvailability=2 blocks Edge WebDriver. The documented values that permit automation are 0 or 1. If the policy is managed by your organization, do not try to work around it: request an approved policy change, test account, device, or managed test runner. Microsoft’s Edge WebDriver documentation explains the policy and setup.
Set up Selenium 4 and a matching EdgeDriver
- Install Selenium 4 for your programming language. Microsoft says Selenium 3 is unsupported for current Edge automation; use Selenium 4’s built-in Edge support rather than the older
Microsoft.Edge.SeleniumToolspackage. - Check the installed Edge major version and obtain the official Edge WebDriver build with the same major version. A major-version mismatch can prevent the session from starting. See Selenium’s Edge-specific documentation.
- Make
msedgedriverdiscoverable. Put its extracted directory onPATH, or configure the driver service with the executable’s full path using the current API for your installed Selenium binding. - Use the Selenium Edge APIs, such as
EdgeOptionsand the binding’s Edge driver class. Add browser arguments only when they are needed and permitted by your organization.
Launch a basic Edge test in Python
This example uses Selenium 4’s Edge support. The headless argument is optional; it changes browser presentation, not the machine’s authorization policy. Install Selenium 4 and set up a compatible EdgeDriver separately before running it.

Microsoft documents both service configuration and PATH setup; check the current binding documentation for the exact constructor signature rather than copying an API from a different Selenium version.

Headless mode is not a fix for a policy block: it does not establish permission to automate Edge. Likewise, changing test code cannot supply a missing remote debugging port inside an isolated Application Guard session.

No. Headless changes how Edge is presented; it does not override a managed policy that blocks WebDriver.
