Choose a server with a supported Linux distribution and CPU architecture, size it for the features you plan to use, and keep Hermes data on persistent storage. The VPS provides the machine; you must separately configure access to an AI model provider or a compatible self-hosted model.
What to check before you buy a VPS
Hermes documentation describes supported operating systems, architectures, installation routes, and Docker resource guidance. It does not recommend a VPS company or establish current provider prices. Compare plans using these requirements, then confirm current specifications and pricing on the provider’s own site.

- Operating system: The installer supports Linux. The platform documentation describes the latest Ubuntu as its tested Linux baseline; distributions with glibc, systemd, and the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard are likely to work well.
- Architecture: The documented Linux installer and Docker routes support x86_64 and aarch64.
- Memory, CPU, and disk: For Docker, Hermes documentation lists minimums of 1 GB RAM, 1 CPU core, and 500 MB of data volume. It recommends 2–4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores, and at least 2 GB of data volume. These are Docker recommendations, not a universal size guarantee for every installation or workload. Hermes Docker documentation
- Backups and persistent storage: Check that you can retain and back up the data Hermes needs, particularly if you choose Docker.
- Region and price: Compare the location and current monthly price against your needs. The cited Hermes documentation does not compare providers or provide VPS prices.
Browser automation using Playwright and Chromium is Hermes’s most memory-hungry Docker feature. The Docker guide says to allocate at least 2 GB RAM when browser tools are active. Other services on the same VPS and growth in stored sessions can also affect the resources you need.
Choose between direct Linux installation and Docker

Direct installation may suit an operator comfortable managing software on Linux. Docker offers a container-based deployment, but requires you to handle image upgrades and preserve its mounted data. In either case, follow the current official instructions for the route you select.
Install Hermes on the VPS
For a direct Linux install
Use the official installation page as the source of truth for the exact installer command and available flags, since those can change. On Debian or Ubuntu, make sure Git, curl, and xz-utils are available as directed there. The installer handles dependencies including Python, Node.js, ripgrep, and ffmpeg. If the server will not use browser automation, check the documented option to skip browser setup.

For a Docker install
- Install and configure Docker on a supported x86_64 or aarch64 Linux VPS.
- Follow the current Hermes Docker guide to run the image and mount the host data directory at
/opt/data. - Verify that the mounted directory is on storage that persists beyond the container’s lifecycle, and include it in your backup plan.
- For upgrades, use the container-image workflow described in the Docker guide;
hermes updateis not supported for Docker installs.
Configure model access after installation
An installed agent is not necessarily ready to use: Hermes still needs a provider and model configured. The quickstart recommends first choosing them and confirming that an ordinary chat works. Add gateway, cron, skills, voice, routing, or other features only after that basic setup is functioning. If you want to use a local or self-hosted model, the quickstart points to configuring a custom endpoint. See the Hermes Agent quickstart.

Keep Hermes data intact during upgrades or migration
For Docker, back up the host-mounted /opt/data directory before replacing a container, upgrading, or moving to another VPS. It contains configuration, API keys, sessions, skills, and memories, while the image is stateless. Verify that backups complete and that you can restore the directory to the intended host path before relying on them.
For a non-Docker install, follow the current Hermes documentation and your own server backup practices for the data and configuration you need to retain; the cited Docker storage instructions apply specifically to that deployment route.

What about a Hermes 1-Click VPS?
A third-party guide describes a DigitalOcean Hermes 1-Click image, but that mention does not verify that the image is currently available or what its present specifications are.
