How to Choose and Add a Microsoft Defender Exclusion in Windows 10 or 11

Windows calls Defender exceptions exclusions. Follow the Windows Security path to add one, choose the narrowest scope, and remove it when it is no longer needed.

To add a Windows Defender “exception,” open Windows Security and add an exclusion under Virus & threat protection. Choose the smallest scope that fixes the problem: a single file is narrower than a folder, file type, or process exclusion. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; menu wording can vary as Windows updates.

Before you add an exclusion

An exclusion tells Microsoft Defender Antivirus not to check the specified target during real-time scanning. Microsoft warns: “Adding an exclusion to Windows Security means that Microsoft Defender Antivirus will no longer check those types of files for threats, which could leave your device and data vulnerable.” Microsoft Support’s Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security App explains the setting and its risks.

Exclusions do not necessarily prevent every scan: scheduled or on-demand Defender scans and third-party antimalware products might still scan the target. Microsoft recommends a single-file or folder exclusion over turning off all antivirus protection.

How to add a Windows Defender exclusion

  1. Open Windows Security. Search for it from Start, or go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
  4. Scroll to Exclusions and select Add or remove exclusions.
  5. Select Add an exclusion, then choose File, Folder, File type, or Process.
  6. Select the file or folder, or enter the file type or process path as prompted.

The names and placement of controls may shift as Windows is updated, but Microsoft documents this Windows Security experience for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Which exclusion type should you choose?

The right choice depends on what is being blocked and how the application works. Compare the scope before adding anything:

Type What it covers Scan behavior and exposure
File One named file Narrowest scope for a single trusted file; Defender real-time scanning skips that file.
Folder The selected folder and all files inside it Exempts every file in that folder from real-time checking, so it can cover much more than one executable.
File type Every file of the selected type, such as .docx or .pdf Broad scope across matching files; rarely the best first choice.
Process Files opened by the specified process Those files are excluded from real-time scanning, but may still be scanned during on-demand or scheduled scans unless separately excluded by file or folder.

For a single file or application component

Choose File when the problem is limited to one known file. This avoids exempting unrelated files stored alongside it or elsewhere on the PC.

For a folder-based workflow

Choose Folder only when the trusted workflow genuinely requires multiple files in that location to bypass real-time scanning. Remember that new files added there are included too.

For a process exclusion

Microsoft recommends specifying the process’s full path and filename. A malware file could use the same filename as a trusted excluded process and evade detection if the exclusion is too loosely defined. Microsoft also documents wildcard examples such as C:MyProcess* and test.*, and allows environment variables in process exclusions; avoid broad patterns unless you understand exactly what they match. See Microsoft’s process-exclusion guidance.

If Windows Security detected a threat

Do not use a broad exclusion as the default response to an actual malware detection. An exclusion prevents real-time checks on a target; allowing a detected threat is a separate action. The Allowed threats page lists items Windows Security identified as threats that you chose to allow, and Windows Security will not act on those allowed threats. If you allowed one by mistake, select it and choose Don’t allow, as described by Microsoft Support.

How to remove an exclusion

  1. In Windows Security, return to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings > Exclusions > Add or remove exclusions.
  2. Select the exclusion you no longer need.
  3. Select Remove.

Removing it restores Defender’s real-time checking for that target.

Why an exclusion setting may be protected

Tamper protection helps prevent malicious apps from changing important Defender settings. Microsoft says an administrator can still change settings in Windows Security while tamper protection is on, whereas other apps cannot change those settings. The consumer guidance does not require disabling tamper protection to add an exclusion, so it should not be treated as a routine workaround. See Microsoft’s tamper protection documentation.
