Compatibility varies by feature, Mac model, operating system, account settings, and, in some cases, region. No single iPhone choice guarantees that every Continuity feature will work with your Mac.
Choose by the tasks you want to do
Apple’s Continuity features connect devices in different ways. Identify your everyday needs first, then check Apple’s requirements for the specific feature and your Mac.

Check your Mac before choosing a phone
Find your Mac model and the macOS version it runs, then compare them with the requirements for each feature you want. This is especially important if you are considering iPhone Mirroring: it has a specific hardware and operating-system gate, so “recent Mac” is not a precise compatibility test.

Also check the practical setup conditions. Handoff and Universal Clipboard rely on the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth; Handoff must be enabled for both. Apple’s instructions explain the requirements for Handoff and Universal Clipboard. If a feature does not work, confirm these settings as well as device compatibility.
Understand iPhone Mirroring’s extra requirements
For iPhone Mirroring, Apple’s support page specifies a Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip, and an iPhone running iOS 18 or later with a passcode. Both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled, the iPhone must be locked, and it must be near the Mac. Apple currently says iPhone Mirroring is unavailable in the European Union; regional availability can change, so confirm it for your location before treating the feature as a deciding factor. Mirroring also has interactions with other features: Apple says the iPhone camera and microphone are not compatible with iPhone Mirroring, and some Continuity features—including Continuity Camera and AirPlay—are unavailable on the Mac while Mirroring is in use.

Use this buying order
- List your must-have tasks. Decide whether file sharing, task handoff, copy and paste, webcam use, app mirroring, calls and texts, or hotspot access matters most.
- Check your Mac. Identify its model and macOS version, then verify Apple’s requirements for each desired feature. Do not assume that one feature’s compatibility establishes compatibility for the others.
- Check setup and location. Confirm account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff, and any feature-specific settings. For iPhone Mirroring, check the hardware, OS, lock-state, proximity, two-factor authentication, and regional conditions.
- Compare eligible iPhone models for your needs. Once you know which features are possible with your Mac, weigh budget, size, battery needs, camera needs, storage, and expected software-support period using current model information. Feature compatibility alone does not establish which model is the best value or best overall.
- Verify accessories for the selected generation. If you need a charger or cable, confirm its connector and charging compatibility with the specific iPhone before buying.
