To cap API spend for one Anthropic Console workspace, open the workspace, go to Limits, and select Change Limit. You can also add an email notification from that tab. To review activity, use Usage for token volume and Cost for spending trends. A workspace limit cannot exceed the organization limit, so the organization cap remains the outer boundary.
Set a spending limit for a workspace

Enter the workspace spending limit and save it. Anthropic’s workspace guidance says this limit must be lower than the organization limit. If you leave the workspace limit unset, the organization limit still applies.

Add an email notification
From the workspace’s Limits tab, choose Add notification and set the spending amount that should trigger an email. If the available thresholds suit your needs, set the notification below the hard spending limit so your team has an opportunity to investigate before requests are blocked. The notification is an early warning, not a replacement for the cap.
Choose the right scope for the cap

Use an organization limit when the boundary should apply across the whole organization, and a workspace limit when a particular team or project needs its own lower ceiling. Monitor token usage in Usage
Open the Console’s Usage report to answer how many tokens were used, by which workspace or API key, and when. Filter by a specific workspace or all workspaces, model, month or a narrower date range, and API key. The report provides input- and output-token charts and statistics, and chart interaction can reveal hour- or minute-level detail. It also identifies rate-limited requests and supports CSV export.

For an audit of which integration or model is driving activity, use the report filters and export the CSV. Anthropic’s model-audit instructions specifically point to Usage → Export for reviewing usage by API key and model. Review spending trends in Cost
Use Cost when the question is monetary rather than token-based. It provides costs by model or in a combined view, monthly breakdowns, a daily cost chart, total cost statistics, and CSV export. Tool-use costs such as web search and code execution are included in the total cost statistics described by Anthropic.
A useful review pairs the daily chart with the monthly total: the chart helps locate when spending rose, while model-level views can help identify what contributed. Anthropic: Cost and Usage Reporting in Console

Check access if Usage or Cost is missing
Anthropic documents report access for Developer, Billing, and Admin roles. Billing users can view cost, usage, and limit values across workspaces; Admins can manage user roles. If the report or a workspace is not visible, check the user’s Console role and workspace access with an administrator. Anthropic: API Console Roles and Permissions
Diagnose requests blocked by a spending limit
A configured organization or workspace spending limit generally returns HTTP 400. A Claude Code workspace spending limit may instead return HTTP 429. But 429 can also indicate rate limiting or a monthly usage-tier spending cap, so status alone does not establish the cause. Automate usage reporting with the API
For recurring or programmatic monitoring, Anthropic’s Messages usage-report endpoint can return usage data filtered by dimensions including workspace, API key, and model. Choose the time bucket and query window to match the report you need; the documented maximum windows vary by granularity:

Review Usage by workspace, model, date, and API key; export CSV when you need an offline audit or recurring internal report.

Review Cost’s daily trend and monthly total to spot changes in spend, then use the model breakdown to investigate.

When a request fails, inspect its error description and the applicable limits rather than treating every 429 as a spending-limit error.

If reports need to run on a schedule, query the usage-report API with an appropriate granularity and window, then paginate as required.
