Choose an iPhone by its width, height, thickness, and weight—not by screen size alone. Shortlist a few models, hold each for several minutes, try the gestures you use most, and test it with a case of similar bulk to the one you plan to carry. If you are considering a foldable iPhone, assess it both folded and open.
Which measurements matter when choosing an iPhone?
Screen diagonal describes the display, not the phone’s overall size or how it will feel in your hand. Apple’s comparison page lists screen sizes from 6.1 inches for iPhone 17e to 6.9 inches for iPhone 18 Pro Max, and gives iPhone Duo a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple notes that these are diagonal screen measurements and that the viewable area can differ from a standard rectangle. The page is localized to Ireland, and availability or features may vary by country. Apple iPhone comparison

- Width and height: These affect how far your fingers need to reach and whether the phone sits comfortably in your grip. Try the gestures you actually use, rather than relying on measurements as a substitute for handling it.
- Thickness and weight: These can affect how a phone feels to hold and carry. A thinner, lighter phone can still be tall or wide.
- Display area: A larger display can be useful for reading and viewing, but it may come with a larger body. Compare body dimensions as well as diagonal size.
- Case and edges: A case changes the object you hold by adding bulk and altering its edges. Evaluate the phone with a case similar to the one you expect to use.
How do the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 16 compare?
These published Apple specifications show why a single measurement cannot stand in for overall handling. The iPhone 17 and iPhone Air are 2025 models; iPhone 16 is a 2024 model and offers a prior-generation point of comparison.

| Model | Body dimensions and weight | Display and materials listed by Apple |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm; 177 g | 6.3-inch display; aluminum design, Ceramic Shield 2 front, color-infused glass back. Apple iPhone 17 technical specifications |
| iPhone Air | 156.2 × 74.7 × 5.64 mm; 165 g | 6.5-inch display; titanium design, Ceramic Shield 2 front and back. Apple iPhone Air technical specifications |
| iPhone 16 | 147.6 × 71.6 × 7.80 mm; 170 g | 6.1-inch display; aluminum design, Ceramic Shield front, color-infused glass back. Apple iPhone 16 technical specifications |
The iPhone Air is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 17, but it is also taller and wider. Its figures do not make it a compact phone; try it in your hand and compare all four body measurements. The iPhone 16 is slightly narrower than the iPhone 17 despite having a smaller display diagonal, another reason not to judge reach by screen size alone.

Which iPhone is easiest to hold, or best for small hands?
There is no objectively easiest-to-hold or best-for-small-hands model established by these specifications. Hand size, grip, preferred gestures, and case choice all affect comfort, and Apple’s dimensions cannot predict how an individual will find a phone. Use the measurements to narrow your shortlist, then make an in-person trial the deciding test.
- Choose two or three models whose dimensions and weight seem plausible for your use.
- Hold each phone for several minutes. Try reaching across the screen and performing common one-handed gestures.
- If you plan to use a case, repeat the check with a case of similar bulk and edge shape.
- For a folding model, check pocketability and handling while folded, then reach and weight distribution while it is open.
Is the iPhone Air too big?
That depends on your hand, grip, and tolerance for a taller, wider device. Apple lists iPhone Air at 156.2 mm tall and 74.7 mm wide—larger in both dimensions than iPhone 17—even though Air is thinner and lighter. Those figures can tell you what to compare, but not whether the phone will feel too big to you.

Which iPhone is lightest?
Among the three models in the measurements above, Apple lists iPhone Air at 165 g, iPhone 16 at 170 g, and iPhone 17 at 177 g. That makes Air the lightest of this particular comparison, not necessarily the lightest iPhone across Apple’s full lineup. Weight is only one part of handling; compare dimensions and try the phone in person.
Is titanium better than aluminum on an iPhone?
Apple lists a titanium design for iPhone Air and an aluminum design for iPhone 17 and iPhone 16. Material names alone do not establish which phone will feel better in your hand, and the specifications cited here do not show that one material is universally preferable. If finish or edge feel matters to you, compare the actual phones in person.

How should you assess a folding iPhone?
Apple describes iPhone Duo as a folding design with a titanium frame and hinge cover. Its listed 5.4-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display describe two screen positions, not the phone’s body dimensions or comparative comfort. Check it separately in both configurations: folded for pocketability and one-handed handling, open for reach and weight distribution. Apple iPhone comparison
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use a case with your iPhone?
If you expect to carry the phone in a case, evaluate it that way before choosing. Added bulk and a different edge shape can change the grip, so a bare-phone trial may not match your everyday experience. Apple lists MagSafe compatibility for current models, but check that any accessory fits the exact iPhone model you choose. The comparison page also says Ceramic Shield 2 models identified there have three times better scratch resistance compared with iPhone 16 or earlier; this is Apple’s qualified claim, not an independent durability finding.
