Choose the iPad mini (A17 Pro) if portability is your priority and an 8.3-inch screen is large enough for the books, notes, and documents you use. Pick Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular according to how often you need internet away from Wi-Fi, and choose storage based on what you plan to keep downloaded. If you regularly read large PDFs or want two apps open side by side, a larger tablet may be more comfortable.
Start with the size: portable reading or a roomier page?
The iPad mini (A17 Pro), introduced in 2024, has an 8.3-inch display. Apple lists weights of 293g for Wi-Fi and 297g for Wi-Fi + Cellular, making either configuration a lightweight option to carry. Those dimensions favor a compact reading and travel setup, but the smaller screen leaves less room for large-format documents, magazines, large text, or side-by-side references. That is a practical inference from the published dimensions, not a hands-on comparison.

Apple specifies 2266-by-1488 resolution at 326 pixels per inch, True Tone, an antireflective coating, and 500 nits of brightness. These are display specifications; they do not mean glare is eliminated or that the screen performs like an e-ink reader outdoors. Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular
Choose Wi-Fi if you can download books, documents, and media ahead of time and expect Wi-Fi or a hotspot when you need to connect. Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular if you regularly need internet away from Wi-Fi. Apple lists 5G, eSIM, and GPS/GNSS for cellular models; mobile data plans are sold separately, and carrier and eSIM support vary. Check the regional model, carrier, and destination support before buying.

128GB, 256GB, or 512GB
Apple lists 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities. Think about the size of your offline book and document library, downloaded media, and apps rather than assuming one capacity suits everyone. Current prices and the cost difference between capacities are not established here, so compare local listings before choosing.
Typing or handwriting
If you mainly type notes or only annotate occasionally, you may not need a Pencil. For handwriting or marking up documents, the iPad mini (A17 Pro) supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple lists the iPad, USB-C charge cable, and 20W USB-C power adapter in the box, but does not list a Pencil; treat either compatible Pencil as a separate purchase. Set realistic expectations for battery life
Apple estimates “Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi or watching video” and “Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using mobile data network.” Apple says its testing was conducted in September 2024 on preproduction units and that actual results vary with settings, use, network, and other factors. These are manufacturer test estimates, not a guarantee of reading time or travel endurance. For trips, plan charging around your use; Apple includes a 20W USB-C power adapter and USB-C charge cable.
Make the choice with a short checklist
- Choose the mini when low carry weight and a small footprint matter more than a large page view.
- Consider a larger tablet if large PDFs, magazines, large text, or two-app work are frequent priorities.
- Choose Wi-Fi if downloads and available Wi-Fi meet your needs; choose Cellular when reliable connectivity away from Wi-Fi is worth a separate data plan.
- Choose storage by considering your offline books, documents, media, and apps.
- Budget for a Pencil separately if handwriting or document markup is central to how you will use it.
A protective case and portable USB-C charging solution may be useful for travel, but verify exact accessory fit and compatibility before purchasing.
