Choose an expansion SSD only after checking the exact handheld model’s supported drive length, interface and capacity. There is no universal “handheld SSD”: the original ROG Ally uses an M.2 2230 drive, while documented Legion Go models use M.2 2242 or, for Legion Go 2, M.2 2242 or 2280. If you want more space without replacing the internal drive, check whether your console supports microSD.
Start with the exact handheld model
Find the model name and generation in the device’s system information, on its label or in your purchase record. Then consult the manufacturer’s specification for that exact model and configuration. Similar product names do not guarantee identical SSD slots: a drive that fits one handheld may be too short or too long for another.

For example, ASUS lists the original ROG Ally with a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230 drive in its launch specifications. Lenovo’s documentation differs by model: the Legion Go 8ASP2 PSREF lists M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 storage, while the Legion Go 2 user guide specifies one PCIe Gen4 M.2 slot supporting 2242 or 2280 drives.
Match the SSD’s physical size and interface
Check the drive’s full form-factor number and interface, not just a listing that says “NVMe SSD” or “handheld SSD.” In an M.2 size such as 2230, the first two digits indicate a 22mm width and the last two indicate a 30mm length. A 2242 drive is also 22mm wide but 42mm long. Those lengths are not interchangeable unless the device manufacturer explicitly supports both.

Confirm that the SSD uses the interface documented for your model, including the PCIe generation and lane details where stated. A faster interface advertised on a retail listing does not guarantee that the handheld can use it at that speed. Capacity support is also model-specific: Lenovo’s PSREF documents tested configurations and says supported capacity is based on Lenovo’s current tested offerings, not a universal limit for every drive.

Choose between an internal SSD and microSD
Internal SSD replacement
Replacing the internal SSD can make sense when you need more internal capacity and are comfortable with a device-specific upgrade. It requires opening the handheld and migrating or reinstalling software. Installation steps, service requirements and warranty implications are not the same across devices or countries; consult the manufacturer’s current service documentation for your exact model before proceeding.

Removable microSD storage
A compatible microSD card adds removable storage without replacing the internal SSD. Match the card to the reader standards the handheld supports. For instance, Steam Deck OLED lists UHS-I, while ASUS lists UHS-II for the original ROG Ally; do not assume every handheld supports the same reader standard. The Legion Go 2 guide lists microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC support.

Official specifications establish that these devices offer removable-storage options, but they do not provide a controlled, device-by-device comparison of game load times from microSD and internal NVMe. Do not rely on a universal speed or load-time improvement claim when deciding between them.
