1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose an e-reader screen by matching page area to what you read and how you carry it: a compact monochrome screen suits prose and portability, color E Ink adds colored covers and illustrations, and a larger screen can make documents and markup easier to work with. There is no universally best size or display type; your preferred text size, grip, lighting, budget, and local bookstore or library access all matter.
Start with what you read most
For novels and other mostly text-based books, a 6-inch monochrome E Ink reader is a sensible starting point. If you want more room on the page, consider 7 or 8 inches. For PDFs, page-layout-heavy documents, or handwritten markup, a screen around 10 inches with stylus support may be more suitable. These are trade-offs, not strict rules: a larger page area also means a less compact device.

6 inches: prioritize portability
A 6-inch reader is easy to carry and is typically enough for reflowable prose, where you can adjust font size and spacing. Kobo’s Clara BW is one example: it has a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD screen, with a listed resolution of 1448 × 1072. Whether its page feels comfortable depends partly on your preferred font size and how the device sits in your hand. Kobo Clara BW specifications

7 or 8 inches: gain page area while keeping a handheld format
A 7- or 8-inch screen gives you more room for text, images, and page layouts than a compact reader, while remaining a handheld size. Kobo lists a 7-inch Libra Colour and an 8-inch Sage. Screen size alone does not determine comfort: check weight, grip, and whether you want page-turn buttons. Kobo lineup Kobo Sage specifications Kobo Libra Colour specifications
About 10 inches: consider documents and markup
A larger screen can show more of a document page at once and reduce the need to zoom or pan, which can be useful for PDFs and notes. Kobo lists the 10.3-inch Elipsa 2E with a Stylus 2 for marking up eBooks and PDFs. A larger screen does not guarantee that every PDF will fit comfortably or be easy to navigate; document layout and your preferred zoom level still matter. Kobo’s US eReader lineup

Monochrome E Ink or color?
Monochrome for prose-first reading
If most of your reading is ordinary text, monochrome E Ink is the straightforward option. Compare the specific screen and device rather than assuming one display generation is best across all readers. For example, Kobo describes the Clara BW as a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1300 HD model. Kobo’s US lineup

Color E Ink for illustrations, covers, and annotations
Color E Ink is worth considering if you read comics or illustrated books, want colored covers, or use color in annotations. Check the model’s stated resolution for both monochrome and color content: on Kobo’s 6-inch Clara Colour, the listed figures are 300 PPI for black-and-white and 150 PPI for color. That specification applies to this model, not to every color reader. If possible, view the screen in person so you can judge how its color looks for your material. - Handling and controls: Check the device’s weight, grip, and whether it has page-turn buttons. These can matter as much as a small difference in screen size.
- Stylus support: If you want to write on eBooks or PDFs, verify that the reader supports a stylus and which tasks it can perform. Kobo lists the Elipsa 2E with a Stylus 2 for markup; support varies by model.
- Store and library access: Check the booksellers and library services you use. Kobo notes that OverDrive availability depends on country and library location. Kobo Sage product page

Quick Recap
A practical way to make the final choice
- Identify your main material. Separate reflowable prose from comics, illustrated books, PDFs, and documents you want to annotate.
- Choose a size range. Start around 6 inches for maximum portability, 7–8 inches for more page area in a handheld reader, or about 10 inches when document viewing and markup are priorities.
- Decide whether color earns its trade-off. If colored material matters, check the model’s color resolution and inspect the display if possible; otherwise, compare monochrome models on their own specifications and handling.
- Check the complete device. Verify lighting controls, buttons, weight, stylus compatibility, local price and stock, and access to the stores or libraries you use.
- Try the screen with your reading habits in mind. If you can, view a typical book page or document at your preferred text size. A specification cannot tell you how comfortable the size and grip will feel to you.
