There is no best library for every application: shortlist maintained, reputable options for your language and deployment environment, then compare their safe APIs, operational fit, validation needs, and migration paths. Use established platform or managed-service protection where it meets the need, and do not write cryptographic routines or protocols yourself.
Start with the data and the threat model
Before comparing libraries, write down what the application will protect and what could go wrong. Identify the data, who might try to access or alter it, how long it must remain protected, and where it travels or resides. Consider whether you can avoid collecting or retaining sensitive data at all.

Decide whether the requirement is protection at rest, in transit, or both. A database field, a file on disk, a network connection, and a user password are different problems; a general-purpose encryption API is not a substitute for the protocol or mechanism designed for each one. The right choice follows from the objective and deployment context, not from a library’s popularity.
Check whether you need a separate library
First look at the application’s framework, operating system, cloud platform, or managed storage service. Existing secure-storage and key-management features may address the need without adding application-level cryptography. OWASP advises avoiding cryptographic code where possible and points to framework and cloud secure-storage capabilities as options.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
If you do need a library, use a maintained implementation with reputable provenance and safe, understandable high-level APIs. Do not create your own algorithms, cryptographic functions, or protocols. OWASP names Google Tink and libsodium as examples of established options; those examples are not a universal ranking or a substitute for checking language, runtime, and deployment support.
Use the primitive that matches the job
For stored data
For application data that must be encrypted, favor authenticated encryption where appropriate. It provides confidentiality while also detecting tampering, so integrity is not left as an afterthought. Check that the library’s API handles nonce or initialization-vector requirements safely; do not invent your own nonce scheme or assemble low-level primitives unless the applicable design and expertise explicitly require it.

OWASP’s Cryptographic Storage Cheat Sheet recommends AES with a key of at least 128 bits, ideally 256 bits, in a secure mode, and favors authenticated modes such as GCM or CCM where available. It advises against ECB for ordinary data encryption. Treat these as general guidance, not a complete design specification: follow the chosen library’s current safe API and applicable standards. A mode without authentication needs a separate integrity mechanism.

Do not assume that asymmetric encryption is the right way to encrypt large volumes of application data. Choose the construction or protocol for the actual use case. OWASP’s general guidance describes ECC using a secure curve such as Curve25519 as a preferred option and RSA with at least 2048-bit keys as a fallback where ECC is unavailable; this does not by itself determine which protocol your application should use.

For passwords
Passwords used for authentication generally should not be stored using reversible encryption. Store them with an adaptive password-hashing function such as Argon2id, bcrypt, or PBKDF2, using a unique salt, as described in OWASP’s Password Storage Cheat Sheet. Hashing and encryption solve different problems: password verification should not require recovering the original password.
Compare candidates against your actual constraints
Build a shortlist from libraries compatible with your application’s language, runtime, and deployment targets. Compare candidates against the workload and operational requirements rather than choosing by name alone.

| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| API safety and task fit | Whether the library exposes a high-level API for the required operation, including authenticated encryption when appropriate, and safely manages nonce or IV requirements. |
| Maintenance and maturity | Whether the project is actively maintained, has a dependable update process, a credible track record, and documented handling of known weaknesses. |
| Runtime and portability | Support for your languages, runtime versions, operating systems, deployment targets, and any interoperability requirements between services or platforms. |
| Operational integration | Whether it can work with the key storage, access controls, backup, rotation, and recovery processes your application will use. |
| Performance | Measured behavior under your real workload and deployment conditions; do not rely on a library’s general reputation as a proxy for your application’s performance. |
| Review and validation | Available third-party review or formal validation, and whether that evidence applies to the exact module, version, configuration, and environment you plan to use. |
| Policy and migration | License and dependency-policy compatibility, plus a practical way to change algorithms or libraries if a vulnerability, requirement, or platform change demands it. |
OWASP identifies key size, known weaknesses, maturity, validation, performance, library quality, and portability as relevant selection factors. For regulated deployments, confirm the exact validation and configuration required by the applicable rule; a library’s name alone does not establish compliance. NIST SP 800-175B is federal guidance on using cryptographic standards to protect sensitive but unclassified information in transmission and storage. Its publication record lists August 22, 2016 as the publication date and November 10, 2018 as the update date; it does not by itself determine a private application’s compliance obligations.

Treat key management as part of the choice
A sound encryption library cannot compensate for exposed or unrecoverable keys. Decide how keys will be generated, stored, accessed, backed up, rotated, and retired, and who or what is allowed to use them. Depending on the environment, options include operating-system or framework facilities, a cloud key vault, a hardware security module, or a secrets-management system. Separate keys from the encrypted data where feasible.

Do not hard-code keys, commit them to source control, or treat ordinary application configuration as a vault. Include retained backups in the lifecycle plan: old keys may need to remain available to decrypt them for the required retention period. Test access controls, rotation, and recovery before relying on them in production.
Use this selection workflow
- Document the use case. Record the data, adversaries, retention period, and whether protection is needed at rest, in transit, or both. Consider first whether sensitive data can be omitted or not retained.
- Check existing capabilities. Review the framework, operating system, cloud platform, or managed storage service for a suitable secure-storage option.
- Shortlist compatible implementations. Require support for your language and deployment targets, credible provenance, active maintenance, clear safe APIs, and a workable dependency-update process.
- Match the mechanism to the task. Use authenticated encryption for stored data where appropriate; use password hashing for authentication secrets and an established transport protocol for data in transit.
- Design the key lifecycle. Choose where keys are generated, stored, used, backed up, rotated, and retired. Define access, recovery, and retained-backup requirements.
- Plan for change and test operations. Where needed, preserve algorithm and key identifiers, build a migration route, keep dependencies current, and test rotation and recovery before launch.
Make replacement possible
Encryption choices can become unsafe or unsuitable as vulnerabilities, standards, platforms, and requirements change. Avoid scattering library-specific calls and assumptions throughout the application. Where the design requires it, preserve enough metadata—such as an algorithm or key identifier—to select the correct decryption path for existing data, and define how data will be migrated to a replacement.
Keep the chosen package updated and know how its maintainers communicate security issues and releases. A migration plan is useful only if key recovery and access to older retained data are accounted for; test that plan rather than assuming future decryption will work.
