Choose an electromagnetic brake by first deciding what the machine must do when power is lost, then sizing for the brake’s real job: holding a stopped load, stopping a moving load, or both. Dynamic stops require checking inertia, stopping time, cycle frequency and heat—not just matching a torque number. Confirm the exact model’s electrical, mechanical and service limits with its manufacturer before purchase.
1. Decide what the brake must do when power is lost
Start with the machine’s required behavior, not a catalog torque rating. A spring-applied, power-off brake engages when its coil loses power; a power-on brake engages when energized. The right default depends on the load and the machine’s response to loss of power. Neri Motori describes electromagnetic brake operation and installation considerations in its brake documentation; Indian Precision Engineers lists both power-off and power-on brakes in its product range.

Write down whether the brake is intended to hold at rest, stop a moving load, or do both. Also document what should happen during a power failure and whether the system includes a service brake or controlled deceleration. A power-off spring-applied brake is often the relevant architecture when braking must occur without coil power, but choosing a brake alone does not establish that the complete machine is safe for a particular hazard.
2. Gather the application data before comparing torque ratings
Prepare the machine details a supplier needs to evaluate the application. Inertia Dynamics’ electromagnetic-brake application assistance sheet asks whether the application is for stopping or holding and requests load inertia.

3. Separate holding duty from dynamic stopping
For a load held at rest
Compare the load’s required static holding torque with the brake’s specified holding torque. Account for the actual load direction, orientation and application conditions when deciding what margin is appropriate; do not treat a generic safety factor as a substitute for understanding uncertainty in the machine.
For a moving load that must stop
Calculate the deceleration torque needed for the complete rotating inertia and desired stop profile, then have the manufacturer confirm that the brake can perform the dynamic duty. The Altra Industrial Motion/Inertia Dynamics spring-applied brake selection document says proper sizing requires calculating dynamic torque and notes that the products are rated by static torque. A static holding rating therefore does not, by itself, establish dynamic stopping capability.

Do not use motor torque as a shortcut for brake sizing or keep adding safety margins without identifying what each one covers. KEB UK’s brake-selection guidance warns that excess margin can increase cost and adversely affect dynamic behavior.
4. Check heat and operating cycle
Every dynamic stop dissipates energy as heat at the friction surfaces. Record how often the brake will stop the load, the energy per stop if available, and whether it will slip continuously or cycle unusually often. Ask the supplier to check the selected model’s permitted duty and thermal limits for those conditions; a torque rating alone does not answer how frequently the brake can stop the machine.

5. Verify electrical and mechanical fit
Before selecting a model, check its requirements against the actual machine and supply:
- Electrical: rated coil voltage, supply or rectifier arrangement, switching, and engagement and release behavior.
- Mechanical: mounting interface, shaft or hub dimensions, envelope and alignment.
- Operating limits: maximum speed, response characteristics and permitted duty.
- Adjustment and service: specified air-gap range, inspection and wear-adjustment needs.
Neri Motori cautions in its electromagnetic brake documentation that an air gap outside the indicated limits can impair operation. Check the exact model’s documentation rather than assuming that dimensions or electrical details carry across a product family.

6. Compare candidate brakes on the same application
Use a shortlist that distinguishes what each brake is designed to do and under which conditions. The sources available here support these comparison criteria, but do not provide standardized comparative measurements across brands or models.

7. Get model-specific confirmation for demanding applications
Send the manufacturer the application data and ask it to confirm the proposed model’s holding torque, dynamic stopping capability, energy per stop, thermal duty, stopping time, wear or adjustment interval, and required control circuit. This is particularly important for gravity loads, personnel hazards, emergency stops or frequent dynamic braking. The selection and application-assistance documents above support evaluating the application with its actual load and duty; they do not establish a universal model or safety factor for every machine.
What product listings can—and cannot—tell you
Indian Precision Engineers describes power-off, power-on, multi-disc and wet-running brakes, and states that its offering includes a standard 24 V DC coil and a 2–1500 Nm range. Those figures and types describe that supplier’s stated product range, not electromagnetic brakes as a whole. Check current availability and the exact model specifications before treating any listed value as suitable for your machine.
For an industrial application, a phrase such as “24V DC spring-applied electromagnetic brake” identifies a product category, not a compatibility guarantee. Do not infer that a marketplace listing is suitable from its title alone; selection depends on the machine data and model-specific engineering limits.
