You can skip Bluetooth, app coaching and other smart features when choosing an electric toothbrush. Focus instead on a comfortable handle, soft bristles, gentle brushing and a simple reminder to brush for two minutes. Before buying, check that replacement heads for the exact model are available and affordable for you.
Do you need an electric toothbrush?
No. The American Dental Association (ADA) says both manual and powered toothbrushes can remove plaque effectively when used appropriately. Its consensus recommendation is to brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Consistent, gentle brushing matters more than whether the brush connects to an app.

A powered brush may be useful if you have difficulty with hand dexterity, need a caregiver’s help with brushing, or have dental appliances. The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s evidence toolkit says personal preference is the most important factor in choosing between manual and powered brushing.

Comfort and handling
Choose a handle and brush head that feel manageable to hold and use. If a brush is uncomfortable, difficult to grip or awkward to move around your mouth, extra features may not make it a better fit.

A simple two-minute timer
A timer can remind you to brush for long enough. The UK toolkit says thorough brushing may take at least two minutes and that timers can help people reach that duration. A basic timer can serve that purpose; the evidence cited here does not establish that app-connected timing is necessary.
Soft bristles and gentle pressure
The ADA recommends soft bristles and gentle pressure. It says these may help reduce gingival injury. A pressure-related feature may be convenient, but the sources reviewed do not establish that a particular pressure-sensor configuration is necessary.

- Electric toothbrush for adults providing gentle yet effective cleaning: the Advanced Sonic Technology pulses fluid between teeth and along the gumline for even more effective oral care
- Safe and gentle electric toothbrush with pressure sensor: if you apply too much pressure, the handle will pulse slightly, reminding you to ease off the pressure, protecting your teeth and gums
- Optimize your routine: EasyStart for a gradual, gentle increase in brushing power, SmarTimer informing when you've reached 2 minutes, and QuadPacer to brush each section of a mouth for 30 seconds
- Brush head replacement reminder tracks how often and how hard you brush, then notifies you when it's time to replace the brush head once it's time; dental professionals recommend changing your brush head regularly
Replacement-head availability
Check the price and availability of compatible replacement heads for the exact handle before you buy. Toothbrush heads need regular replacement, so the ongoing cost and whether you can readily find the right fit matter alongside the initial purchase.

Which features can you skip?
You can treat Bluetooth, app coaching and multiple brushing modes as optional conveniences rather than requirements. The evidence reviewed does not directly compare app coaching, Bluetooth, pressure-sensor configurations or premium modes with a basic toothbrush. That means their added value is not established here—not that they can never help an individual user.

Likewise, do not choose solely by whether a brush is described as sonic or rotary, or by how many modes it offers. The UK toolkit does not establish that one powered-brush action is superior. A comfortable brush you use consistently is a more practical priority than a feature count.

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is a useful way to screen a specific model: the ADA says it reviews scientific evidence for safety and efficacy. Check the actual model on the accepted-products listing rather than assuming every product from a brand has the Seal. Acceptance is not a personalized dental recommendation, and it does not tell you whether the brush is currently the cheapest or available in your area.

For example, the ADA listing includes the Oral-B Pro 1000 in an oscillating-rotating-pulsating category. That makes it an example of a listed model, not a claim about its current feature configuration, price or stock.
A 2014 Cochrane review compared powered with manual toothbrushes. It reported that powered brushes reduced plaque by 11% at one to three months and 21% after more than three months; reported gingivitis reductions were 6% and 11%, respectively. These are the review’s relative comparisons, not a forecast for an individual buyer. The authors said the clinical importance was unclear. The review included 56 trials, its evidence was current through January 23, 2014, and it was published June 17, 2014.
A practical buying checklist
- Start with fit: Choose a handle and head you can comfortably use.
- Look for the basics: Prioritize soft bristles and, if you find it helpful, a simple two-minute timer.
- Check the exact model: Look up the ADA Seal listing for that model, not just the brand.
- Check ongoing costs: Confirm compatible replacement heads are available and compare their current prices for your handle.
- Ignore features you will not use: Do not pay extra for connectivity or modes simply because they are included.
When to replace the brush head
The ADA recommends replacing toothbrushes every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are visibly matted or frayed. For an electric toothbrush, make sure you can obtain compatible heads for your particular handle when it is time to replace one.
