How to Fix a Robot Vacuum That Gets Stuck, Misses Rooms, or Loses Its Map

If your robot vacuum gets stuck, skips rooms, cannot find its dock, or seems to lose its map, start with the route and the robot’s physical condition—not a factory reset. Clear obstructions and jams, check room access and sensor cleanliness, then confirm the map and dock setup. Error codes, cleaning methods, and map controls vary by brand and exact model, so use the matching manual before replacing parts or deleting saved data.

Start with the safe physical checks

Move cords, clothing, and other loose items out of the robot’s path. Before touching brushes or wheels, turn the robot off or follow the maintenance instructions for your model. Then inspect the underside and bumper:

  • Check that the drive wheels turn freely and are not wrapped in hair or thread.
  • Remove debris caught in the main brush or side brush.
  • Look for material wedged around the bumper and make sure it can move as intended.
  • Check the robot’s error message or indicator against the manual for its exact model.

These are distinct possible faults, not proof that a component has failed. Roborock manuals, for example, list separate guidance for blocked LiDAR, a stuck bumper, suspended or jammed wheels, dirty cliff or wall sensors, and tangled brushes. The error number and remedy depend on the model; use its own manual rather than applying another robot’s code.

If it misses rooms, check access and cleaning settings

Open the route

Open the door to the missed room and clear its entrance and path. Roborock’s mapping instructions say to open the doors of rooms that should appear on the map. As Roborock puts it, “First, make sure there are no obstacles preventing access to the missed areas.” Roborock’s missed-areas guidance explains the brand-specific checks.

Check the selected route or cleaning mode

A robot may omit an edge or area because of its route setting, not because its map disappeared. On certain supported Roborock models, Fast Cleaning can skip some room boundaries and spots. Check the cleaning mode and any room or zone selection in the app; available labels and controls vary by model and firmware. Roborock’s support article describes this behavior for the models it covers.

Clean navigation sensors according to the manual

Dust on a sensor can affect navigation, but there is no single safe cleaning method for every sensor. Identify the sensor in your model’s instructions and follow its specified cloth and dry-or-damp method.

Do not assume that one brand’s damp-cloth instruction applies to another sensor or robot. Roborock’s instructions and iRobot’s navigation guidance specify different methods for the sensors they discuss.

If the map is missing or inaccurate, verify setup before remapping

For an initial Roborock map

  1. Enable map saving in the app if your model offers that setting.
  2. Place the robot at its dock and open doors to the rooms you want mapped.
  3. Start the mapping run from the dock and let the robot explore without interruption.
  4. Keep the dock in place and let the robot return to it successfully.

Roborock’s instruction is: “The robot should start from the dock and return to the dock by itself and successfully.” Its mapping guidance also describes map tools such as inspecting boundaries, merging or dividing rooms, and selecting rooms on supported models. App menus and feature availability differ across generations and firmware.

For an iRobot smart map

Map learning and recovery behavior depend on the model. iRobot says a robot that has not returned to its station successfully may need additional successful runs; for repeated mission failures, its smart-map guidance suggests a mapping run. Check the instructions for your model before removing a map. iRobot’s smart-map guide covers the recovery behavior it supports.

If the robot cannot find its dock

Check whether the robot or dock was moved, a door was closed, the route changed, or an obstacle now blocks access. Clean the dock’s beacon or signal area and the robot’s corresponding sensor only as the manufacturer instructs. A moved dock or altered path can make the robot’s return route unreliable.

For Roborock docks, the cited placement guidance calls for at least 0.5 m of clearance on each side and 1.5 m in front. Treat those distances as Roborock-specific, not a universal placement rule. iRobot’s Error 1010 guidance for the model families it covers also identifies blocked access, a moved or unplugged dock, and sensor interference as possible causes. Consult the matching page for your brand and model: Roborock dock troubleshooting or iRobot Error 1010 guidance.

Reboot before considering a reset

A reboot and a factory reset are not interchangeable. iRobot says rebooting retains maps, schedules, and preferences; a factory reset deletes saved data, and remapping may be needed afterward. iRobot describes a reboot as resolving many typical robot issues, but the procedure varies by model. Follow your product’s instructions and do not choose a reset option until you know what data it removes. iRobot’s reboot and reset guidance and its smart-map guide explain the distinction for the models they cover.

If clearing jams, confirming access, cleaning the specified sensors, and rebooting do not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer with the exact model, displayed error code, and a description of when the failure occurs. Do not replace a wheel, sensor, or other part based only on a general symptom.
