Choose an electric kettle by matching its capacity and minimum fill to how much water you actually heat, then decide whether you need temperature settings below boiling. Before buying, check automatic shut-off, boil-dry protection, safe handling, easy cleaning and compatibility with your local electrical system.
Start with the amount of water you usually boil
A kettle’s maximum capacity matters if you regularly make several drinks at once, but its minimum fill matters just as much if you usually heat one cup. A kettle with a high minimum fill may make single servings less convenient and require you to heat more water than you need.

Haier’s UK buying guide uses 1.7 litres for family use and 1.3 litres for smaller households as examples. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not universal capacity standards. Compare a model’s stated minimum and maximum fills with your routine rather than choosing by maximum capacity alone.

A basic kettle heats water to a boil. A variable-temperature kettle lets you select a lower target, which can be helpful if you regularly prepare drinks that call for water below boiling or want to repeat a particular setting.

Haier suggests 70–80 °C for green, white and matcha tea, and 90–96 °C for filter coffee. Treat these as Haier’s guidance, not fixed requirements for every tea, coffee or brewing method. If you usually want boiling water, temperature control may add little value; if you use lower temperatures often, it may be worth comparing.
Check temperature accuracy, not just the display
A displayed setting does not guarantee that the water reaches that temperature. Consumer NZ reports that its laboratory tests found temperature settings were not always accurate. If precision matters for your drinks, look for independent testing of the specific model rather than relying on the presence of a temperature display alone.

Compare the features that affect everyday use
- Water-level visibility: Check that the markings are easy to read at the angle and location where you will fill the kettle.
- Filling and lid operation: Consider whether the lid opens easily, stays secure and gives you enough access to fill and clean the interior.
- Pouring control: Look for a spout and handle that make it comfortable to pour without awkward wrist movement or splashing.
- Exterior temperature: Consumer NZ notes that steel sides and lids can become very hot, while lightweight plastic models tend to stay cooler to the touch. Material alone does not establish that a kettle is safe to touch; consider the model’s construction and handling.
- Cleaning and limescale: Check whether the opening is wide enough for cleaning and whether the kettle has a removable scale filter. In hard-water areas, limescale maintenance may be a recurring task.
- Electrical compatibility: Make sure the kettle’s plug and electrical specifications are suitable for the country where you will use it.
Make automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection non-negotiable
Automatic shut-off stops heating after the water boils; boil-dry protection is intended to prevent operation when there is too little or no water. Electrical Safety First states: “Your kettle should have auto shut-off or ‘boil-dry protection’.” Check the product information for these protections rather than assuming every model includes both.
Also consider whether the lid closes securely, whether the kettle is stable on its base, and where its cord will sit while you fill and pour. These details affect everyday handling and help keep the cord away from hot surfaces and the path of a pour.

Use and maintain the kettle safely
Electrical Safety First advises buying from a reputable retailer, following the manufacturer’s instructions, keeping the kettle away from liquids, and checking plugs, sockets and cables for damage. Stop using a kettle that is cracked or otherwise damaged.
Its advice to check for a UK three-pin plug and fuse applies to buyers in the UK; electrical requirements differ by market. Elsewhere, verify local plug and voltage compatibility rather than applying UK-specific guidance.

Use a simple comparison before you buy
- Write down your usual serving size. Compare the kettle’s minimum fill as well as its maximum capacity.
- Choose boil-only or variable temperature. Base the decision on whether you regularly need water below boiling, not on the display alone.
- Verify the safety protections. Confirm automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection in the model’s specifications.
- Check handling and maintenance. Review water-level visibility, pouring, lid operation, cleaning access, exterior temperature and scale filtration.
- Confirm local electrical compatibility. Check the plug and electrical specifications for the country of use.
- Look for independent model testing if precision matters. In particular, seek test results for temperature accuracy rather than assuming a selected setting is exact.
