Choose an e-reader by matching it to your books and reading habits—not by looking for a universal “best” model. Check library compatibility first if you borrow ebooks, then compare screen size and display type, file-transfer rules, features, and the current price in your country. Manufacturer listings can confirm specifications and supported formats, but they do not establish which screen is most comfortable for you.
1. Start with how you get ebooks
Your book source can determine which device is practical. If you buy mostly through one bookstore, check that store’s ecosystem and the steps for getting any books you already own onto the reader. If you borrow from a public library, confirm that borrowing works in your country and with your local library before buying.

Rakuten Kobo says all Kobo e-readers support library borrowing through Libby in select countries; its FAQ also describes OverDrive borrowing. Libby manages loans and syncs them to a Kobo reader. That is not a guarantee that the service is available in every country or that a particular library participates. Check the Kobo e-reader FAQ and catalog and your library’s own instructions.

2. Pick a screen size and display for what you read
A larger screen gives a page more room; a smaller one is easier to carry. Choose based on where and what you read, rather than assuming one size is best. Kobo’s US catalog lists models with 6-, 7-, 8-, and 10.3-inch screens. These sizes describe the range in that catalog, not a controlled comparison of reading comfort.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Monochrome or color
For novels and other mostly text-based reading, a monochrome display may be the straightforward choice. Color can be useful for covers, comics, and illustrated material, but whether it is worth the additional cost depends on your books and preference. Kobo lists its Clara BW with monochrome E Ink Carta 1300 HD, and its Clara Colour and Libra Colour with color E Ink Kaleido 3. Compare the exact model listing rather than treating those display types as interchangeable.
Glare, lighting, and reading comfort
Kobo describes its E Ink screens as glare-free and print-like; Amazon describes the entry Kindle display as glare-free. Those are manufacturers’ descriptions, not independent comparative findings. Warm light and dark mode also vary by model. If you can, try a device in the lighting conditions where you expect to read; no product specification can determine which screen you will find most comfortable.

3. Check your files and transfer workflow
A format appearing on a compatibility list does not guarantee a book will open: digital rights management (DRM), file protection, or the transfer method can matter as much as the extension. Check both the file’s protection and how you will move it to the reader.

This is Kobo’s support statement; it should not be assumed to describe Kindle support or to mean every protected file is readable. Kobo says books can be purchased from its store or transferred by USB, with supported cloud services on select readers. It also says sideloaded books do not sync across devices or appear in its Books app. If you rely on personal files, consider whether that trade-off fits your reading and device-sync habits.

4. Compare the features you will actually use
Water resistance, page-turn buttons, stylus support, storage, and lighting features differ by model. Use the exact product page to verify a feature before you buy; a feature on one device in a brand’s range does not imply it is on another.
- Water resistance: Kobo lists it for Clara BW, Clara Colour, and Sage.
- Page-turn buttons: Kobo lists them for Libra Colour.
- Stylus compatibility: Kobo lists it for Libra Colour and Sage.
- Storage and waterproofing: Amazon’s buying guide lists a 7-inch Kindle Paperwhite with 16 GB storage and waterproofing.

These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independently tested comparisons. For Amazon’s current model descriptions, see its Kindle buying guide; for Kobo models, consult its US e-reader catalog.

5. Compare prices in your market
The following are point-in-time US manufacturer-listing prices accessed in 2026, not a full market survey or a like-for-like total-cost comparison. Prices and offers can change; check the current local listing, bundles, and any recurring content costs before deciding.
| Model | Screen or distinguishing detail stated in the listing | US price observed | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

- Library borrower: Verify country availability and that your library supports the borrowing route before choosing a device for Libby or OverDrive.
- Reader of mostly text: Compare monochrome models, carrying size, and the lighting features you want.
- Reader of comics or illustrated books: Consider color E Ink, then weigh its listed price and screen size against how often you will use color.
- Owner of ebook files: Check format, DRM, and transfer steps; confirm whether sideloaded books will sync the way you expect.
- Frequent traveler or reader near water: Verify waterproofing and portability on the precise model, not just the brand’s range.
- Budget-focused buyer: Compare current local prices and bundles, and avoid treating a one-time listing price as a lasting value ranking.
