How to Choose an Audio Codec for a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream

For stereo YouTube radio over RTMP or RTMPS, AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps is the simplest documented choice. Check your protocol before configuring audio.

For a standard stereo radio stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, choose AAC and set audio to 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps. YouTube also lists MP3 as supported, but its live encoder guidance gives the stereo recommendation above. First check which ingestion protocol your encoder uses: YouTube’s HLS guidance lists a different set of supported codecs.

Check your YouTube ingestion protocol first

The audio codec choice depends on how your encoder sends the live stream to YouTube. RTMP/RTMPS and HLS have separate requirements; do not treat one protocol’s codec list as applying to the other.

Ingestion route Codecs YouTube lists Stereo guidance 5.1 guidance Practical consideration
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps Only AAC is supported for 5.1; 48 kHz, 384 Kbps YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
HLS AAC, AC3, or EAC3 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps 48 kHz, 384 Kbps HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Choose it when your workflow calls for HLS, not just to gain another codec option.

These are YouTube’s documented live-stream settings, not universal audio-engineering rules. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its guide to setting up an HLS stream.

AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live stereo audio?

For conventional stereo over RTMP or RTMPS, AAC is the straightforward default: it is supported and matches YouTube’s listed stereo configuration of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. MP3 is also listed as supported for this route. If your encoder already uses MP3 and the stream is working, the published guidance does not establish a reason to switch on sound-quality grounds alone.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not compare these codecs in controlled listening tests or identify a codec-specific reliability advantage for continuous radio. Perceived sound depends on factors such as the source audio, bitrate, encoder implementation, and listening conditions. The supported setting is a compatibility recommendation, not proof that one codec always sounds best.

Stereo

For YouTube live stereo audio, use 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps, following the guidance for the ingestion route you selected. These figures describe audio encoding settings; they do not mean every viewer receives the original input unchanged.

5.1 surround

Do not apply the surround settings to a stereo radio stream. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 is supported only with AAC and recommends 48 kHz at 384 Kbps. Its HLS guidance also lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. Confirm that your encoder is actually sending a 5.1 signal before selecting surround settings.

Keep encoding mode in its own category

YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS stream encoding. CBR is an encoding-mode setting, not an audio codec, so selecting AAC or MP3 does not by itself configure CBR.

Understand what viewers receive

The codec configured in your encoder is for the YouTube ingestion path; it does not guarantee that every listener’s device receives that exact format. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. In YouTube Help’s words: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.”

Test and monitor a continuous radio stream

  1. Match the test to the real stream. Before going live, send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, using the same protocol, codec, sample rate, and bitrate.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream health. Review the live control room’s stream-health information and messages during the test and the broadcast. Address warnings or audio problems rather than assuming a successful connection means the sound is correct.
  3. Watch for sustained stability. For a 24/7 station, keep monitoring the ongoing stream for interruptions or degraded audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring but does not specify a universal test duration.
