Check four things separately: whether chats can improve models, how long they are retained, when people may review them, and what deletion or temporary-chat controls actually cover. No single privacy setting answers all four.
How do I choose an AI assistant that collects less personal data?
- Identify your account and feature. Confirm whether you use a consumer account, a work or school account, or a particular assistant feature such as connected apps or coding sessions. Policies and controls can differ; an organization administrator may control work or school settings.
- Check model-improvement use. Find out whether your conversations may be used to improve models, and whether the control is an opt-out, an opt-in, or a mode-specific exclusion.
- Read retention rules separately. Look for the stated periods and purposes for keeping chats, feedback, safety records, or copies already reviewed by people. A training opt-out is not the same thing as deletion.
- Check human review and connected services. See whether reviewers or service providers may access content, under what circumstances, and whether data from connected apps is included.
- Verify what deletion or temporary modes cover. Check whether a control applies to future chats, existing activity, reviewer copies, or other account services. Use the provider’s current privacy page because policies and settings can change.
These checks are more useful than trying to award providers a universal privacy score. The policies below cover specific consumer-facing products and controls; they do not establish a consistent ranking across all assistants or account types.

Are my chats used to train AI models?

These controls are not interchangeable. For example, ChatGPT’s documented control concerns model improvement; Gemini’s Keep Activity setting also affects whether chats appear in Activity and how they are retained; Claude’s Incognito mode is a specific exclusion from improvement. Read the policy for the feature you are actually using rather than inferring that one setting covers every purpose.
How long does an AI assistant keep conversations?
Retention periods describe different kinds of data and purposes, so they should not be compared as if they were equivalent storage limits.

- Claude consumer accounts: Anthropic says it retains personal data as reasonably necessary under its policy. If users allow chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, eligible data may remain in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. This statement applies to the consumer products and accounts described in its retention article; it is not a general retention period for every Claude account or data type.
- Gemini Apps activity on: Google gives an 18-month auto-delete default and says users can change it to 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. Chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when the user deletes activity. These are separate periods and apply to the data and conditions described in Google’s Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026.
- Gemini Apps activity off: Google says future chats are still saved for 72 hours to respond to requests, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. That period is short-term service and safety retention, not a promise of zero storage.
- ChatGPT: The cited OpenAI Data Controls guidance explains how to opt out of model improvement but does not by itself establish a complete conversation-retention period. Check OpenAI’s current policy for the data type and account in question rather than treating the opt-out as a deletion setting.
Can people review my AI chats?
Do not assume that disabling model improvement prevents all access by people. Google says human reviewers help protect and improve Gemini services when activity is used in the ways described by its Privacy Hub. It also says previously reviewed chats and related data can remain for up to three years, even after activity is deleted.
Google separately notes that a subset of Connected Apps data processed by Gemini may be reviewed by human reviewers. With Keep Activity on, connected data may be used to improve Google services, including model training. Google advises against connecting apps containing personal or confidential information that the user would not want used for training. Details are in its Connected Apps privacy guidance.

The cited OpenAI and Anthropic controls address model improvement or specific modes; they do not establish from those pages alone that no person or service provider can ever access a conversation. Look for separate review and safety disclosures in the policy for your account.
Does turning off chat history stop an assistant from keeping my data?
No. A history or activity control can change how conversations are used or displayed without eliminating all short-term storage, safety processing, or retention exceptions.
Gemini Keep Activity off
Google says future Gemini chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train its AI models unless the user sends feedback. They are nevertheless saved for 72 hours for service response, feedback processing, and safety. Google also warns that settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History may continue to save data through other Google services. See the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
Deleting Gemini activity
Deleting activity does not delete copies of chats already reviewed by human reviewers or the related data that Google says may be retained for up to three years. Activity deletion and deletion of every retained copy are therefore not the same operation.

Claude Incognito chats
Anthropic says Incognito chats are excluded from Claude improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled. That is a statement about model improvement, not a claim that the conversation is never stored or processed for other purposes. Consult the Incognito chat guidance for the mode’s stated scope.

ChatGPT model-improvement opt-out
Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” or opting out through the Privacy Portal changes the model-improvement setting described by OpenAI. The cited guidance does not say that this action deletes chats or reverses use of information in models already trained.
