Choose lubricant by your firearm maker’s manual and the exact part being lubricated—not by a grease label’s temperature range alone. Use grease only where the manual permits or specifies it; some manufacturers reserve grease for heavy-wear contact points and recommend thinner oil for cold-weather use. Because lubricant behavior and firearm requirements vary, a product’s stated range does not guarantee reliable operation at every temperature within it.

Start with the firearm manual and the contact point

Check the manual for the lubricant type and application point before selecting a product. A lubricant described broadly as suitable for firearms is not necessarily approved for every surface or mechanism in your firearm. If the manual is unclear, ask the firearm manufacturer rather than assuming grease can replace oil.

Grease can stay in place on designated heavy-wear areas, but that does not make it the right choice for every moving part. For example, Wilson Combat describes its Ultima-Lube II Grease for heavy-wear areas and positions its low-viscosity Ultima-Lube II Oil for cold-weather use. That is Wilson Combat’s product-specific guidance, not a universal rule for other firearms or lubricants: Wilson Combat Ultima-Lube II Grease and Wilson Combat Ultima-Lube II Oil.

How cold, heat, and heavy use affect the choice

Cold weather

Some lubricants thicken in cold and may interfere with operation. U.S. Army technical guidance discusses cold-weather lubricant concerns but also cautions that transition temperatures differ by weapon. Its thresholds and procedures are military guidance, not a blanket instruction for civilian firearms. Follow your own firearm’s manual for expected conditions: U.S. Army technical manual.

Do not infer cold-weather performance from a product’s lowest stated temperature alone. Check whether the firearm maker permits that lubricant at the specific contact point and under the conditions you expect. Wilson Combat, for instance, lists a 10° to 350° F range for its oil and describes it as a cold-weather option; that specification applies to the named product, not all firearms or oils.

Heat and sustained use

Compare the lubricant’s stated range with the firearm maker’s guidance, but do not treat the upper number as proof that a firearm will operate reliably at that temperature. Product specifications describe the product; they do not establish the firearm’s operating limit or a tested advantage over another brand.

Heavy wear

Where the manual allows grease, a manufacturer may recommend it for high-friction or heavy-wear points. Confirm the precise placement. Wilson Combat describes its grease for heavy-wear areas; Remington describes its gun grease for sliding parts, threads, and hinge points. These are product-specific descriptions, not permission to apply either grease to every firearm part.

Wilson Combat Ultima-Lube II Oil Wilson Combat describes its low-viscosity oil as suitable for cold-weather use. Consider it only if your firearm’s maker calls for or permits oil at the application point. 10° to 350° F, according to the product page accessed 2026. Product page.

Check compatibility and evidence before deciding

  • Application: Match the product’s stated use to the exact part and the manual’s directions.
  • Conditions: Compare expected cold, heat, and use with both the firearm maker’s instructions and the product specification; neither a label nor a published range guarantees firearm function.
  • Materials and environment: Manufacturers make claims about corrosion protection, water resistance, and material compatibility. Verify those claims against your firearm’s manual and materials instead of assuming they apply to every finish or component.
  • Evidence: The specifications above are manufacturer statements. No independent head-to-head performance study is established here, so they should not be read as comparative test results.

What about a cold, humid climate or white lithium grease?

Humidity does not override the manual’s lubricant instructions. For a cold, humid environment, verify the approved application point, cold-weather direction, and any relevant compatibility or corrosion claims for the particular firearm and lubricant. The cited material does not establish that white lithium grease is suitable for firearms generally; do not substitute it unless the firearm manufacturer approves it for the exact use.

When the specifications conflict or the manual is silent

Use the source document you can identify, and preserve its qualification when quoting a temperature figure. Lucas Oil’s product page and data sheet differ on the upper end of the listed range; neither discrepancy establishes a guaranteed firearm operating limit. If the manual does not resolve lubricant choice or placement, contact the firearm manufacturer.
