How to Choose a Zero-Downtime Deployment Strategy

A reliable zero-downtime strategy pairs a suitable rollout pattern with health monitoring, a rehearsed rollback, and database changes that remain compatible across versions.

A zero-downtime strategy is not a promise that users will never see an interruption. It is a release and recovery plan designed to keep service available while a change is introduced. Choose rolling, canary, or blue/green based on how much traffic you can safely expose, how quickly you need to reverse a change, the cost of parallel infrastructure, and whether old and new versions can safely use the same data.

What “zero downtime” means in practice

Availability depends on more than how servers are replaced. The new application must be ready to serve real traffic, traffic must move in a controlled way, and the prior version must remain a viable recovery option. Shared state—especially a database—can complicate a release even when the application rollout itself is gradual.

AWS describes blue/green releases as providing “near zero-downtime and rollback capabilities.” The qualification matters: “near” is not a guarantee. Routing behavior, application readiness, state, and the implementation determine whether users experience errors or interruption. The AWS wording appears in Introduction – Blue/Green Deployments on AWS.

Which deployment pattern fits your release?

All three patterns reduce the risk of replacing every running instance at once, but they differ in traffic control, parallel infrastructure, and how a rollback works. AWS and Google Cloud describe rolling and blue/green approaches; AWS also documents canary rollout behavior. HashiCorp cautions that stateful workloads need additional planning.

Pattern How it works Best fit Main trade-off Recovery approach
Rolling Replace or upgrade portions of the running fleet in sequence, so old and new versions coexist during the rollout. Incremental changes using the existing fleet. Both versions must remain compatible while they coexist; the rollout needs monitoring as each portion changes. Stop or reverse the rollout and restore the updated portion, with monitoring to detect whether recovery worked.
Canary Send a small share of servers or traffic to the new version, observe it, then increase exposure or roll back. Limiting the initial blast radius and assessing behavior under real production conditions. Requires meaningful health and error signals plus control over which traffic reaches the new version; the exposed subset can still be affected. Halt expansion or roll back when the canary shows elevated errors.
Blue/green Prepare a parallel environment, test it, then redirect production traffic; retain the former environment. A clear traffic cutover and a readily available previous environment for recovery. Requires parallel infrastructure and careful handling of shared state, data, and traffic switching. Redirect traffic to the former environment if validation or production behavior reveals a problem.

Choose rolling when incremental replacement is enough

A rolling deployment changes the fleet in portions rather than switching all production traffic at once. It avoids preparing a full parallel environment, but it is only safe when the old and new application versions can operate at the same time. Plan how to respond if errors rise after some instances have changed; rollback is not automatic just because the rollout is incremental.

Choose canary when you need to limit initial exposure

A canary is a gradual form of release: begin with a small percentage of servers or traffic, check how the new version behaves, and expand only if the signals are acceptable. The value depends on choosing signals that reveal user-impacting problems and being able to stop or reverse exposure promptly. A small canary limits—but does not eliminate—the blast radius.

Choose blue/green when a parallel environment and clear cutover are worth the cost

Blue/green stages the next version in a separate environment while the current one continues serving users. Validate the new environment before shifting production traffic, and keep the prior environment available as the recovery path. The approach makes the traffic switch explicit, but it does not by itself solve shared-database compatibility or guarantee that the cutover is interruption-free.

Build the release around health signals and rollback

Regardless of pattern, define how you will decide that a release is healthy and what action follows when it is not. AWS’s canary guidance describes observing behavior as exposure increases and rolling back when the canary has an elevated error rate. For blue/green, AWS describes testing the new environment before redirecting production traffic and retaining the former environment for rollback.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
  • Keep the current version serving users while preparing the next one.
  • Identify the health and error signals that matter for the change, and observe them during each rollout stage or after a cutover.
  • Set a clear stop condition: halt expansion, or return traffic to the prior environment or version when validation fails or errors rise.
  • Make sure the recovery path remains usable after the change. A traffic switch alone does not reverse incompatible data or state changes.

Rollback is part of the deployment strategy, not an afterthought. A retained environment or older application version helps only if it can still serve traffic safely with the state that exists at the time of recovery.

Treat database compatibility as a separate release problem

During a rolling or canary rollout, old and new application versions may run concurrently. Blue/green can also leave two application environments dependent on shared data. In each case, a database change that works only with the new application can undermine the ability to keep serving users—or to return to the prior version.

Plan stateful changes so the versions that must overlap can safely use the data during the transition. Decide separately how the application rollout, data change, and recovery path fit together. HashiCorp notes that stateful workloads such as databases require additional work; choosing a deployment pattern does not remove that requirement.

What managed-database blue/green claims do—and don’t—tell you

Amazon RDS blue/green support varies by database engine version and AWS Region. Check the current AWS documentation for the exact engine and Region before relying on the feature; the name “blue/green” alone does not establish that a particular configuration is supported. AWS documents these scope qualifications in Overview of Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments.

In a January 2026 announcement, AWS said faster blue/green switchovers for single-Region RDS configurations can typically reduce primary database or writer upgrade downtime to five seconds or lower for Aurora and RDS PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB, in all AWS Regions. This is AWS’s product claim for the stated configuration and upgrade scope, not an independently measured general benchmark. It is not a claim that an entire application will have no downtime, and it should not be generalized to multi-Region configurations.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Check version and state compatibility. Determine whether the current and next application versions can safely coexist with the data and shared state during rollout and recovery.
  2. Choose the exposure pattern. Use rolling for sequential fleet replacement, canary for controlled gradual exposure, or blue/green for a parallel environment and explicit traffic cutover.
  3. Define the signals and stop condition. Decide what evidence of errors or failed validation will halt expansion or trigger a return to the previous version.
  4. Preserve a workable recovery path. Confirm that the prior version or environment can serve traffic with the state that will exist after the change.
  5. Verify managed-service scope. If a database service is part of the plan, check the exact engine version, Region, and configuration against the provider’s current documentation.

There is no universally best pattern. A team with little spare infrastructure may favor rolling, a team prioritizing limited initial exposure may favor canary, and a team that values a distinct cutover and retained environment may favor blue/green. The choice is sound only when traffic control, monitoring, rollback, and data compatibility work together.
