Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the apps, files, and devices you need to keep using—not with the laptop’s brand. Choose a Windows laptop if a required program or work environment is Windows-specific. Consider a MacBook if your must-have apps support macOS and its built-in apps or ecosystem suit you. Before buying either, confirm compatibility for the exact software, peripherals, and workflows you rely on.
Check your essential apps and devices first
Write down the software and equipment you need for work, school, or personal tasks. Include printers, other peripherals, specialized file formats, offline work, and any requirement to use Windows. An app’s name alone may not tell you whether the edition or workflow you need will work on a new computer.

Chromebook access to Microsoft 365 is different from installing the Windows or Mac desktop editions of Office. Check which edition and features your workflow requires using Microsoft’s Chromebook guidance. Apple says many Windows apps, including Microsoft Office, are available for Mac, but verify your specific application and use case before choosing macOS; see Apple’s guidance for people switching from Windows to Mac.
Check peripheral compatibility with the device’s manufacturer as well. Apple’s macOS compatibility information covers support for common file types and devices such as printers and cameras, as well as PC networks; it does not guarantee that every particular device or workflow will work.

Match the platform to your accounts and devices
Consider where your files and accounts live: Google services, Microsoft services, Apple services, or a mix. Also note which phone or tablet you use and whether you depend on features that connect it to your computer. These details can make one platform more convenient, but they do not replace checking software and peripheral compatibility.
- Lean toward Windows if a must-have application or work environment requires Windows.
- Consider a MacBook if your required apps support macOS and Apple’s built-in apps or ecosystem fit how you work.
- For either platform, verify the exact app edition, file format, and connected devices you need rather than assuming compatibility from a general platform claim.
Plan how to move your Chromebook files
Before retiring your Chromebook, identify what is stored in cloud services, on the Chromebook itself, and on external media. Confirm that you can access important files from the destination computer or copy them where they need to go, then test a few essential documents and other materials.

Apple provides setup guidance for migrating content from a Windows PC to a Mac. Microsoft describes Windows Backup for saving and transferring important items between PCs. Neither guide establishes an automatic, complete migration from ChromeOS to a new computer for every file or account, so check your own data and services. Decide whether local storage or an external drive makes sense
If your documents are cloud-synced and you have reliable internet, you may not need to copy everything onto an external drive. A local transfer can be useful for a large media collection, specialized folder structures, or limited connectivity. Google documents external-drive backup as an option in its Chromebook transition guidance and explains Chromebook external-storage use in its switching guide and Chromebook overview. If you plan to use a drive, check that it has enough capacity and connects to the ports on your chosen laptop.

Compare specific laptops after choosing a platform
Once you know whether Windows or macOS fits your requirements, compare the actual configurations you can buy. Consider the display and keyboard, portability, required ports, warranty, price, and whether the computer suits your workload. A platform-level decision cannot identify the best model for every budget or task; those details depend on the specific laptops under consideration.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that the exact configuration meets your app and peripheral requirements.
- Check its ports against the accessories you already own or plan to use.
- Compare screen, keyboard, and portability needs against how and where you work.
- Review current price and warranty for the specific model and configuration.
