Compare Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) using the same quote currency, time window, and type of market data. Then assess spot price, volume and liquidity, derivatives activity, ETH/BTC relative performance, volatility, and event context as separate inputs. No single indicator—or the figures below—establishes a reliable buy or sell signal.
1. Make the comparison like for like
Decide what question you are asking before you open a chart. To compare how BTC and ETH performed against dollars, use the same dollar-denominated data basis for both. To compare which asset performed better against the other, examine ETH/BTC. Choose the observation window too: intraday, daily, weekly, and longer-term views can produce different readings.

Note whether the numbers come from exchange spot markets, an aggregated benchmark, or futures. They measure different things and may have different timestamps. CME Group describes its cryptocurrency real-time indices as calculated each second and its reference rates as once-daily benchmarks. Its spot and cross-rate feeds aggregate data from multiple sources and are described as indicative. A live exchange quote and a benchmark value therefore need not match at a given moment.

If you are selecting a data feed or venue, check its spot and derivatives coverage, venue coverage and aggregation method, update cadence and timestamps, units and contract specifications, historical depth, and access terms or fees. Those details determine whether two readings are actually comparable.

2. Start with spot price, volume, and liquidity
Price movement
For each asset, describe the movement over your chosen interval as rising, falling, or range-bound. Use the same start and end times and quote currency. A pair of charts with different windows or data sources can create a misleading comparison.
Volume and execution conditions
Check traded volume over that interval and, where available, market depth and spreads. Price movement accompanied by trading activity may provide more context than price alone, but it does not prove that the move will continue. Do not compare one asset’s aggregated exchange data with the other asset’s single-exchange feed without stating the difference.
3. Read futures volume and open interest separately
Futures volume counts contracts traded during a period. Open interest counts contracts that remain outstanding and unsettled in a particular derivatives market. Coin Metrics defines open interest as “the number of contracts that are currently outstanding and not settled for a specific derivatives market.” Neither measure, by itself, tells you whether traders expect prices to rise or fall: activity can increase on either side of a move.

When comparing the two assets, match contract type, venue, observation window, and units. Also check contract size, expiry, and whether the figures are contract counts or notional value. Contract counts on one exchange describe that venue, not the entire market.

A dated CME example—not a current market reading
CME Group’s Q4 2025 figures illustrate how BTC and ETH futures activity can differ on one venue. They are historical CME contract counts, not current totals or a directional signal.
| Futures measure | BTC | ETH |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily volume (ADV), Q4 2025 | 13.4K contracts | 21.8K contracts |
| Average daily open interest (ADOI), Q4 2025 | 26.4K contracts | 43.2K contracts |
| ADV change versus Q4 2024 | −25% | +137% |
| ADOI change versus Q4 2024 | −27% | +256% |
Source for all table values: CME Group, Q4 2025. The year-over-year changes compare that quarter with Q4 2024; they do not describe subsequent or present-day activity.
4. Use ETH/BTC to compare relative performance
The ETH/BTC ratio expresses how much Bitcoin is required to buy one Ether. If the ratio rises over your selected interval, ETH has strengthened relative to BTC; if it falls, BTC has strengthened relative to ETH. This answers a different question from comparing their dollar prices: both assets could rise in dollars while one still outperforms the other.
CME Group describes an Ether/Bitcoin Ratio reference rate, a real-time index, and a futures product. Its real-time ratio index is calculated each second. In the futures context, buying the ratio represents an expectation that Ether will outperform Bitcoin; selling it represents an expectation that Bitcoin will lead. Those positions express a view, not a guaranteed outcome.

5. Treat funding as market mechanics, not a forecast
Perpetual futures use funding payments to encourage their prices to stay close to the underlying spot price. Depending on the rate’s sign, long-position holders pay short-position holders or the reverse. Coin Metrics describes funding as a way to “incentivize market participants to take positions that keep perpetual futures prices close to the underlying.”
When using funding as context, record the venue, payment interval, sign, how persistent the rate is, and the futures-to-spot basis. A rate from one venue or interval is not automatically comparable with another. The source material does not establish a funding threshold that predicts price direction; treat persistent or extreme readings as something to investigate alongside other data.

Volatility describes the scale of price movement or expected variability, not whether the price will rise or fall. Historical or realized volatility looks at past movement; implied volatility is derived from options pricing and reflects forward-looking expectations. Compare measures only when their definitions and time windows match.

CME Group’s Bitcoin Volatility futures are based on 30-day forward-looking implied volatility. The available product information establishes that Bitcoin measure, but does not establish an equivalent Ether implied-volatility product or support a BTC-versus-ETH volatility ranking. Do not infer either from Bitcoin data alone.

7. Add events as context
Macro news, protocol events, regulatory developments, and other news can affect price and liquidity. Identify relevant events for the period you are analyzing, but do not treat an event as an automatic trading signal.
For U.S. readers, the SEC issued an interpretive release on March 17, 2026, addressing application of federal securities laws to certain crypto assets and transactions and noting CFTC guidance. The release became effective March 23, 2026. Its scope is specific; it should not be generalized into a claim that every crypto asset or transaction has the same regulatory status.
8. Turn the comparison into a pre-trade checklist
- Set the basis: Write down the quote currency, time window, data provider or venue, and whether each figure is spot, benchmark, or futures data.
- Describe spot conditions: Record BTC and ETH price direction, interval volume, and available depth or spreads.
- Check derivatives consistently: Compare futures volume and open interest separately, using matching contract types, venues, periods, and units. For perpetual funding, note venue, interval, sign, persistence, and basis.
- Check relative strength and risk: Read ETH/BTC for relative performance and evaluate volatility using a clearly identified measure and window.
- Record event context: Note relevant news or regulatory developments for the same period without treating them as a prediction.
- Write the trade plan: State the thesis, the condition that would invalidate it, and the risk limit before placing a trade.
If two readings use different sources, units, timestamps, or contract specifications, label those differences rather than combining the numbers into a single conclusion.
