Windows 11’s published minimums are 4 GB of RAM and a storage device of at least 64 GB, but those figures establish basic compatibility—not how much memory or space will suit your work. Before buying, confirm the complete Windows 11 requirements, then compare the PC’s installed memory and storage with the apps, multitasking, and files you expect to use.
What Windows 11 requires
Microsoft’s current requirements list a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of memory, and a storage device of 64 GB or larger. The PC also needs UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and an HD display greater than 9 inches diagonally. These are minimum compatibility requirements; meeting them does not guarantee that a particular workload will feel comfortable.

For Home and Pro editions intended for personal use, Microsoft also requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup. Requirements can vary for specific features, so check the relevant feature requirements as well as the baseline list. Microsoft’s current details are on its Windows 11 System Requirements and Windows 11 requirements pages. The 4 GB memory and 64 GB storage figures also appear in Microsoft’s 2021 Minimum Hardware Requirements for Windows 11 specification.

Four gigabytes is the Windows 11 minimum, not a general recommendation for every buyer. Microsoft’s requirements establish the compatibility floor, but do not specify one higher capacity that will be sufficient for every person or workload. Your choice should reflect the programs you use and how much you keep open at once.

- List the applications you expect to use, including any demanding work or creative software.
- Consider your typical multitasking: for example, whether you run several applications and browser tabs at the same time.
- Compare the installed RAM on candidate PCs with those needs, and check the manufacturer’s documentation to see whether memory can be upgraded in that exact model.
Do not assume that a laptop can take more memory just because some laptops can. Upgrade options depend on the model; Microsoft advises checking with the PC manufacturer or a retailer.
How much storage do you need?
A 64 GB drive meets the stated minimum, but that figure is not a promise of roomy storage for Windows, updates, applications, and personal files. Microsoft notes that storage needs may increase over time for updates and certain features. Estimate the space your own programs and files will need, then compare it with the PC’s stated capacity.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Check both capacity and storage type in the specifications for the exact model. If you expect your needs to grow, verify whether the manufacturer supports a storage upgrade before buying; do not infer upgradeability from the product category or appearance.

NVMe is not a universal Windows 11 requirement. Microsoft’s DirectStorage requirements apply to games that use the Standard NVM Express Controller driver: they require an NVMe SSD and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support. If DirectStorage matters for a game you plan to play, check that game’s needs and the PC’s specifications rather than treating NVMe as necessary for every Windows 11 computer. See Microsoft’s feature-specific requirements.

Compare PCs against the same checklist
When choosing between models, compare them on the requirements and on how well their components fit your intended use:
- Compatibility: Confirm every Windows 11 requirement, not just RAM and storage.
- Memory: Note installed RAM and verify model-specific memory upgrade options.
- Storage: Compare capacity and type, and confirm whether the exact model supports upgrades.
- Workload fit: Consider your applications, usual multitasking, and file collection; the minimum figures alone cannot answer whether a PC suits those needs.
- Special features: Check extra hardware requirements only for features you intend to use, such as DirectStorage for applicable games.
For a new purchase, Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page is a useful starting point. Verify the exact configuration in the manufacturer’s listing or documentation before deciding, especially when the same model name is sold with different components.

Check whether an existing PC can upgrade
For a consumer PC, Microsoft recommends using the PC Health Check app or checking Windows Update for Windows 11 upgrade eligibility. On a managed device, ask the IT administrator. If the PC fails because of memory or storage, an upgrade may sometimes be possible, but the available options depend on the computer; consult its manufacturer or a retailer before purchasing parts. Microsoft’s support guidance covers eligibility checks and upgrade options.
If the PC is not eligible and you are considering a replacement, compare a Windows 11 PC against the full checklist above rather than relying on a product title or a claim that it is “Windows 11 ready.”
