When an online prescription arrives, check the medicine and its packaging, read its storage instructions, and put it away under those conditions promptly. There is no one temperature that suits every prescription: the product label and patient information take priority, and a pharmacist can advise if delivery conditions or instructions are unclear.
What to do when your medicine arrives
- Check the parcel and medicine. Confirm the medicine and strength match your prescription information and look for visibly damaged or compromised packaging. If something is wrong, contact the dispensing pharmacy before using it.
- Find the product-specific instructions. Check the dispensing label, manufacturer packaging, and patient information for temperature, light, moisture, refrigeration, and after-opening requirements. Follow those directions from the start. NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) explains that manufacturers define ambient storage ranges and that these can vary; its guidance for UK healthcare settings describes 15°C to 25°C as an ideal ambient storage area, not a universal target for every medicine. Read NHS SPS guidance on temperature control.
- Act promptly if refrigeration is required. Put the medicine into the storage conditions stated on its packaging. Do not assume that a cold pack means the medicine was kept within its required range: SPS warns that direct contact with cool packs can overcool or freeze medicines, and advises maintaining intended conditions through dispatch, transit, delivery, and transfer to storage. See NHS SPS guidance on transporting refrigerated medicines.
- Ask before using a medicine affected by a delivery problem. If it arrived unexpectedly warm or frozen, was delayed, or otherwise may have been exposed to unsuitable conditions, contact the dispensing pharmacist promptly. Do not decide it is safe based on appearance or a general temperature rule; stability depends on the particular product and exposure. SPS offers professional guidance and a refrigerated-medicine stability tool, but neither establishes a universal consumer answer for an unknown excursion. See NHS SPS temperature-control guidance.
How to store medicines at home
Medicines without special storage instructions
For most medicines, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a cool, dry place. Its examples include a dresser drawer, storage box, closet shelf, or kitchen cabinet. Avoid damp bathrooms and places near sinks or hot appliances, where heat and humidity may affect medicine. These are general U.S. consumer recommendations; the medicine’s own instructions take precedence. Read the FDA’s storage and expiration guidance.

Keep instructions available and restrict access
Where practical, keep the medicine in its original labeled packaging so its identity, strength, instructions, and expiry information remain available. Keep it out of reach of children and anyone for whom it was not prescribed. A lockable medicine box can help restrict access in some homes, but it does not control temperature or humidity; choose a storage location and container compatible with the medicine’s stated conditions.

When instructions are unclear
Do not move a medicine into a different storage condition based on generic advice. Ask the dispensing pharmacist or prescriber what applies to that product, including any instructions that begin after opening.

Check the expiry date and dispose of medicines safely
Do not use a medicine beyond its expiration date. FDA says an expired medicine is not guaranteed to remain safe and effective. For U.S. readers, FDA’s preferred disposal option for most unused or expired medicines is a take-back location or prepaid mail-back envelope. If neither is readily available, check whether the medicine is on the FDA flush list; if not, follow FDA household-disposal instructions. Some products, including certain sprays and lozenges, may have specific directions, so check the label or ask a pharmacist. Read FDA medicine-disposal guidance.
Disposal services and rules differ by location. Outside the United States, follow your local pharmacy or medicines regulator rather than applying the FDA flush list automatically.

Check an online pharmacy before ordering
For UK readers, NHS advises checking that an online pharmacy is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). An unregistered website may sell medicines that are out of date, diluted, fake, or unsuitable. NHS separately advises checking the relevant registration for online doctor services. These checks are specific to the UK; elsewhere, use the appropriate local regulator. Read NHS advice on buying medicines online.
