Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For wireless PC VR, choose a router that supports 5 GHz and at least Wi-Fi 5, connect the gaming PC to it by Ethernet, and place it close to the headset’s play area. Wi-Fi 6 is a sensible tier for a new purchase; Wi-Fi 6E is optional and only useful if the headset and streaming app support it. No headline speed rating or router model alone guarantees low latency or a clear image.
What router do you need for wireless PC VR?
Start with the streaming app’s requirements. Steam Link lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as the minimum for headset streaming. Steam’s launch guidance says Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended, not required. Those statements distinguish a baseline from an upgrade suggestion; they do not establish that every PC VR streaming app has identical requirements.

For a new router, Wi-Fi 6 is a reasonable choice, but prioritize a reliable 5 GHz connection, an Ethernet port for the PC, and a practical location near the play space. A larger advertised speed number does not by itself establish better VR performance.
Do you need Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for Quest PC VR?
Not universally. Steam Link’s published minimum is Wi-Fi 5 on 5 GHz. VRChat recommends a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router for its Quest wireless-streaming setup, which includes Steam Link, Air Link, and Virtual Desktop. Wi-Fi 6E is therefore a compatibility-dependent option rather than a universal requirement: check the current requirements for both your headset and the app you plan to use.

What matters most when comparing routers?
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi band and generation | 5 GHz support and Wi-Fi 5 or newer; consider Wi-Fi 6 for a new purchase. Consider Wi-Fi 6E only if your headset and app support it. | Steam specifies 5 GHz and Wi-Fi 5 as Steam Link’s minimum. Wi-Fi 6/6E are recommendations in some guidance, not a universal requirement. |
| Wired PC connection | An Ethernet port and a suitable cable or wired connection to the router/access point. | Steam and Meta support guidance recommend connecting the PC by Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. |
| Location and signal path | Can the router sit near the play area, ideally in the same room or with a clear line of sight? | Distance, walls, floors, metal, electronic equipment, and competing wireless networks can affect signal strength. |
| Network topology | Can the headset use a suitable 5 GHz network without disruptive congestion? If troubleshooting Air Link, consider Meta support’s non-mesh guidance. | Meta support recommends a non-mesh configuration, but the available guidance does not show that every mesh system fails or that a dedicated router is mandatory. |
| Price, ports, and warranty | Check current local listings and confirm the exact model’s ports, warranty, and availability. | Router prices, specifications, and availability vary by model and region; there is no verified model ranking here. |
How should you set up the network?
- Connect the PC to the router or access point by Ethernet. Steam’s 30 November 2023 launch guidance says the router needs a wired connection to the PC and a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network for the headset. See Steam’s Steam Link launch announcement.
- Connect the headset to the same local network. VRChat recommends that the PC and Quest headset share a network for its wireless-streaming setup. Microsoft gives the same-network and same-subnet guidance specifically for Mixed Reality Link, its Quest-to-PC productivity feature.
- Use 5 GHz for the headset when available. Steam recommends 5 GHz rather than the more congested 2.4 GHz band for its network guidance. This is a general recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular latency or image quality.
- Place the router near the play area. Meta support recommends the same room or line of sight and at least one metre above the ground. Reduce obstacles where practical; Steam identifies walls, floors, distance, metal, electronics, and other wireless networks as factors that affect signal.
Does internet speed or a mesh system determine VR quality?
Do not confuse your broadband subscription with the local headset-to-PC connection. The streaming setup guidance focuses on the local network and a wired connection between the PC and router; it does not establish that a faster internet plan improves local PC VR streaming.
Meta support recommends a non-mesh configuration, particularly as setup guidance for its wireless PC VR use case. That is not proof that every mesh network is unsuitable. If a mesh setup is unreliable, test the headset and PC on the same local network and, where practical, try an access point or router in the same room before replacing hardware.

When do more specific network recommendations apply?
Some requirements belong to a particular app or feature rather than wireless PC VR as a whole. For Microsoft Mixed Reality Link, a Quest-to-PC productivity feature, Microsoft specifies gigabit LAN, 802.11ac with 802.11axe recommended, 5 GHz with 6 GHz recommended, and an 80 MHz channel width and 90% signal as recommendations. It also notes that low signal or 2.4 GHz can cause a pixelated display in that use case. These are Mixed Reality Link recommendations, not universal requirements for Air Link, Steam Link, or gaming VR.
What to check before buying
- Confirm your headset and chosen streaming app’s current compatibility list and network requirements.
- Look for 5 GHz support and at least Wi-Fi 5; treat Wi-Fi 6 as a sensible new-router tier rather than a mandatory upgrade for every setup.
- Make sure you can wire the PC to the router or access point and position the wireless access point near the play area.
- Compare the exact model’s ports, warranty, price, and regional availability using current listings.
- Do not buy solely on a high advertised speed rating: the available guidance does not establish a direct guarantee from that figure to VR latency or image quality.
Router guidance and headset/app compatibility can change. Steam’s current support page is the place to verify Steam Link’s supported headsets and requirements; its launch announcement is dated 30 November 2023.
