Choose a router by the speed and stability you actually get at the TV, the coverage your home needs, and the Wi-Fi or Ethernet capabilities of your streaming device—not by the biggest number on a router’s box. Netflix recommends a stable connection speed of 15 Mbps or higher for its UHD/4K streams, but that is Netflix’s guidance, not a universal threshold for every service. Check the connection where you watch before buying.
Start by checking the connection at your TV
Your internet plan and your home Wi-Fi are separate links in the chain. A router cannot increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet provider, and a fast plan does not guarantee a strong Wi-Fi signal in the room where you watch.

Netflix recommends a stable connection speed of 15 Mbps or higher for UHD/4K playback on Netflix. Treat that as a service-specific recommendation, not a guarantee that every 4K stream will play reliably at that speed: other devices may be using bandwidth at the same time, and Wi-Fi conditions can fluctuate. Netflix says it adapts video quality to connection speed and may begin at a lower resolution before switching up. Netflix’s speed guidance and video-quality guidance explain the service’s recommendations.
Run a speed test on the TV or streaming device, or as close as possible to its usual location. Netflix suggests checking the speed shown on the device and points users to Fast.com. A test beside the router can look good while the signal in another room is weak.

Check the whole playback chain
A router is only one part of 4K playback. Confirm that your streaming subscription includes the intended quality, the app’s playback settings allow it, and the TV or streaming box supports UHD/4K. Netflix’s quality guidance recommends checking the plan, settings and playback device as well as the connection.
If the speed measured at the device is inadequate, identify where the bottleneck lies before replacing equipment. Poor results on Wi-Fi but good results near the router can point to a coverage or placement issue. Poor results even with a wired connection suggest looking at the modem, internet plan or provider service rather than assuming a new router will fix it.
Choose the right coverage approach
Keep a single router if coverage is already good
If the connection is stable where the TV is, a new router or mesh system may not solve a problem you do not have. First optimize the router’s position: Netflix recommends putting it in an open space off the floor, moving it closer to the device, and keeping it away from other wireless devices and appliances. See Netflix’s connection troubleshooting steps.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Consider mesh when the problem is room-to-room coverage
Mesh uses multiple units to extend coverage through a home. It is worth considering when a distant room or another floor has weak signal despite reasonable performance near the main router. It is a coverage strategy, not a guaranteed speed upgrade, and a mesh system will not raise the bandwidth your provider supplies.
As one product example, Google says Nest Wifi Pro units work together to extend coverage and describes the system as able to stream multiple 4K videos at once. That is Google’s product guidance, not an independent performance test or a reason every household needs mesh. Google also says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh network with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi Wi-Fi 5 units. Check the details in Google’s Nest Wifi Pro guidance.
Compare router features that matter for your devices
Do not confuse combined throughput with one device’s speed
Router labels that add together performance across bands and devices are not a promise of internet speed for the TV. Google lists Nest Wifi Pro’s combined throughput as up to 5.4 Gbps in the US and 4.2 Gbps outside the US. Those are regional figures for combined system throughput, not a single-client rate or a guarantee of the speed delivered by an internet plan. Google’s Wi-Fi 6E guidance explains the figure.

- AX3000 WiFi 6 Speed: Get up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz for smooth 4K streaming, gaming, video calls, and fast downloads across your home.
- Built for Busy Homes: OFDMA and MU-MIMO help multiple phones, laptops, TVs, and gaming devices share the network efficiently, reducing congestion when everyone is online.
- 7 dBi High-Gain Coverage & EasyMesh: High-gain antennas and Beamforming extend stronger WiFi throughout your home. EasyMesh support lets you expand coverage with compatible routers and roam seamlessly from room to room.
- VPN & Secure IoT Networking: Built-in OpenVPN, WireGuard, PPTP, and L2TP support flexible VPN connections, while a dedicated IoT network helps isolate smart-home devices from your primary network.
- Easy Setup with NFC & 4 Gigabit Ports: Set up and manage your router through the Tenda app or web interface. NFC tap-to-connect makes joining WiFi easier, while 4× Gigabit ports with automatic WAN/LAN detection simplify wired connections.
Pay for newer bands only when compatible devices can use them
Nest Wifi Pro uses 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands. The 6 GHz band is useful only to compatible clients; a TV or streaming box that cannot use it will not gain that capability just because the router has it. Check the specifications of the playback device before paying extra for Wi-Fi 6E. Regional product specifications can also differ.
Think about simultaneous household use
Several active devices can compete for available internet bandwidth and wireless capacity. Consider what your household uses at the same time as 4K streaming, but do not translate a router’s aggregate throughput label into a guaranteed per-device speed. If your plan itself is constrained, a router upgrade cannot remove that limit.
Use Ethernet when it is practical
If both the TV or streaming box and router have suitable Ethernet ports, a wired connection is a useful way to remove the wireless hop and compare performance. Netflix recommends wired or Wi-Fi networking when available; Google documents supported Ethernet connections for its Wi-Fi systems, including direct connections to TVs in supported setups. See Google’s Ethernet setup guidance.

-
Move the router to an open, elevated position; reduce distance and obstructions, and keep it away from other wireless devices and appliances.
-
If possible, connect the TV or streaming box to the router by Ethernet and compare playback or test results.
-
If performance is good near the router but poor across rooms, reconsider placement or a mesh layout. If it remains poor over Ethernet, investigate the modem, ISP plan or service issue before buying a faster router.
