For a mid-range phone, battery life matters more if you regularly spend long stretches away from an outlet; charging speed matters more if you can plug in during short breaks and need a quick top-up. The best choice depends on your routine, so compare measured runtime and timed charging results for the exact model sold in your market—not just battery capacity or headline wattage.
How to decide based on your routine
Prioritize battery life if you need a phone to last
Choose endurance first if your day includes long commutes, travel, outdoor work, or heavy use with few chances to recharge. The practical question is how long the phone lasts under a workload like yours, not how large its battery sounds on a spec sheet.

Prioritize charging speed if you can top up regularly
Fast charging is more valuable when an outlet is reliably available during a meal, a break, or while getting ready. A short charging window can restore useful power, but a high peak-wattage figure does not tell you how much charge you will gain in that window.
Compare measured runtime, not just battery capacity
Battery life is the time a device can be used before it needs recharging. Capacity, usually stated in mAh, is one input, not a direct measure of real-world endurance: screen size, software, processor, signal conditions, and your activity all affect how quickly a phone uses energy. Battery capacity also declines with age and use. The European Commission’s 2023 battery-policy impact assessment says larger capacity can help maintain acceptable runtime as a battery ages. In its section on higher battery capacities, it also states, “Long battery life is the most important feature in smartphones for prospective buyers.” That is an assertion in a policy document, not a consumer-survey result establishing what mid-range buyers generally prefer. For phone-to-phone comparisons, look for battery-runtime results produced by the same test method. PhoneArena documents conditions for its tests, including fixed 200-nit screen brightness, Wi-Fi-only testing, and 100% battery health. Such consistency makes its results more useful for comparison than capacity alone, though a controlled test cannot reproduce every person’s network and activity mix. Check that both phones have comparable records and note any missing or untested results. PhoneArena battery and charging results
Compare charging by elapsed time, not peak watts
A phone’s peak wired-charging wattage is not the same as its time to full or the amount it gains during a short break. Charging proceeds in phases, and the final portion toward full generally takes longer than the earlier portion when suitable charging power is available. A 2024 white paper from Locatis, Lda says smartphone batteries acquire “70 to 80%” of their total charge faster than the remaining portion to full under appropriate power conditions; that is a general statement, not a promise for every phone or charger. Compare both a timed partial charge—such as the time to reach a useful level from a stated starting percentage—and a full-charge time. Results depend on the phone’s battery level, charger and cable compatibility, temperature, battery age, and whether the phone is being used. Google says charging speed depends on usage during charging, battery age, and ambient temperature, and that actual speed may be slower than its test result. Google Pixel battery and charging support
What published phone comparisons can—and cannot—show
Published results illustrate how endurance and charging speed can have different winners. In a comparison dated June 18, 2025, XpertPick reported that the vivo V50 exceeded 21 hours in its PCMark battery test and took under 45 minutes to charge fully; it called the iQOO Neo 10 the fastest full-charge performer among the phones it compared. These are that publication’s results for a selected group, not a timeless ranking or a guarantee for every regional variant. XpertPick also reported repeated PCMark errors for the iQOO Neo 10 and Samsung Galaxy A36 5G. The passage does not establish the test version, exact market variants, or current local availability. PhoneArena’s results table lists the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G with a 5,000 mAh battery, 45 W wired charging, and a 1 hour 15 minute full-charge result; it lists the Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro with a 5,000 mAh battery, 33 W wired charging, and a 1 hour 10 minute full-charge result. These are table entries, not a controlled head-to-head conclusion. Confirm the live record and exact model before relying on the figures: test conditions and regional variants matter, and a charger’s compatibility can affect the result. A practical way to compare two phones
- Write down your constraint: note the longest stretch you are typically away from an outlet, how heavily you use the phone, and whether a short charging break is realistic.
- Compare same-method runtime results: prefer tests that state their brightness, network, and battery-health conditions. Treat missing or failed results as unknown rather than assuming a phone would rank well.
- Compare timed charging results: check time to a useful partial charge as well as time to full, with a compatible charger and similar starting battery levels where the test specifies them.
- Check what the figures represent: distinguish manufacturer estimates, independent test results, and one publisher’s comparison. Do not treat mAh as runtime or peak watts as a charging-time guarantee.
- Verify the local model: confirm that test results and charging specifications match the exact market variant you can buy. The figures above do not establish regional availability, current prices, or charger compatibility for every market.
When a power bank helps
If the main problem is reaching an outlet with too little charge, a USB-C power bank can provide another chance to recharge. It does not increase the phone’s built-in battery capacity, improve its measured runtime, or make the phone itself charge faster. Check the phone’s and bank’s documented charging compatibility before relying on a particular combination.
