Choose a VPS for the encoder workload you will actually run—not by looking for a universal CPU or RAM minimum. A VPS that passes through compatible video can have very different demands from one that must resize, add graphics, change frame rate, or re-encode. For a dependable 24/7 stream, calculate continuous outbound transfer, check the provider’s sustained network and plan limits, test the route to YouTube, and arrange process recovery and monitoring before relying on the server.
Start by deciding what the VPS will do
The main sizing question is whether the VPS will encode your video or simply send a compatible source to YouTube. The answer affects CPU needs, the software configuration, and how much testing you should do before leaving a stream unattended. No source establishes one minimum VPS size that fits every 24/7 stream.

Pass through compatible media
If the source already has the output characteristics you need, FFmpeg may be able to stream-copy the video rather than decode and encode it again. This can avoid the work of a video re-encode. It does not mean that every file can be sent unchanged: check that the source’s video and audio codecs, frame rate, dimensions, and other output settings are suitable for your planned YouTube stream.
Re-encode only when the job requires it
Scaling, adding graphics, changing codecs, or converting frame rate requires processing the media. That makes sustained CPU performance and the exact FFmpeg filters and settings more important. Do not choose a plan from core count alone: test the actual stream workload on the instance class you intend to buy, and leave headroom rather than planning to keep the CPU continuously at its limit.

RAM matters too, but the available guidance does not establish a universal memory figure. Account for the operating system, encoder, any supporting services, and the media workflow you run; then check actual use during a sustained test.
Set the YouTube output before calculating capacity
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm the current options and stream status in YouTube Studio’s live control room, since exact settings can depend on codec and the controls available for the stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the authority for its ingest guidance.
| H.264 output example | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Approximate payload transfer per day at a constant bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | About 43 GB |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | About 65 GB |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | About 108 GB |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | About 130 GB |
The YouTube rates in the table are current H.264 ingestion recommendations accessed in 2026, not VPS specifications. Transfer amounts are arithmetic estimates from a constant bitrate multiplied by 24 hours, expressed in decimal units; they are not YouTube or hosting-provider allowances. They exclude protocol overhead and additional traffic. Audio and other streams also contribute to total outbound usage, so treat these numbers as a first-pass estimate, not a plan guarantee.

Calculate the network plan for continuous operation
Estimate the stream’s outbound payload from its video and audio bitrates and the hours it will run. For a 24/7 stream, a day’s estimate quickly becomes a large monthly transfer requirement. Add allowance for protocol overhead, any additional streams, and uploads or other server traffic. Then compare that estimate with the provider’s current included outbound transfer and overage terms.
- Check transfer, not just port speed. An advertised port speed does not tell you how much monthly transfer the plan includes or what excess use costs.
- Ask about sustained capacity and fair-use terms. Confirm whether the network rate is available continuously and whether any fair-use condition applies.
- Check the provider’s billing units. Providers may describe transfer using different units or accounting rules; compare the plan’s own stated allowance with your estimate.
Provider allocations, overages, and prices change. Verify them on the current plan page before committing; no named provider plan or comparative benchmark is established here.
Choose a location by testing the route
A nearby VPS region is a sensible place to begin, but physical distance alone does not establish the best route to YouTube’s ingest servers. Compare available locations and test the actual outbound route and stream stability from the candidate server. Keep the YouTube stream health display open during testing and observe whether the connection remains stable under the workload you plan to run.

Decide how much storage you need
If the VPS only runs the encoder and streams media stored elsewhere, persistent disk may be limited to the operating system, software, logs, and working files. If you keep source media on the server or record output locally, include those files in your capacity estimate. Storage needs therefore depend on the workflow; there is no fixed amount established for every stream.
Compare candidate VPS plans on the same workload
Use one defined workload to compare plans: the same output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, codec, filters, and continuous runtime. Compare the following before selecting a plan:
- Sustained CPU capability for your actual encoding job, or adequate headroom for stream-copying and supporting processes.
- Memory available to the VPS and observed use during a sustained test.
- Included outbound transfer, sustained network capacity, overage pricing, and fair-use conditions.
- Available region and the route quality you observe during a real stream test.
- Persistent storage if you will keep media or recordings on the server.
- Whether you can supervise and automatically restart the encoder after a crash or reboot.
- Support and total monthly cost at your calculated usage.
Do not treat a provider’s advertised specifications as proof that your stream will remain uninterrupted. The available evidence does not certify a VPS provider for continuous YouTube streaming.

Build recovery and monitoring into the setup
A VPS does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Run the encoder under a service manager such as systemd, or another supervisor, so it can restart after a process crash or server reboot. Before relying on it unattended, test the complete setup and confirm that a restart restores the stream as expected.
Monitor FFmpeg output and errors, CPU and memory pressure, network conditions, and disk space when local files or recordings make it relevant. Also monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live; do so with the same settings and media you intend to use for continuous operation.
Troubleshoot common VPS streaming failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder crashes or the VPS becomes overloaded | FFmpeg errors and CPU or memory pressure, especially when re-encoding or applying filters | Test the actual job on the intended instance class, reduce unnecessary processing, or select a plan with more sustained capacity and headroom. |
| Stream disconnects or YouTube reports poor stream health | Outbound route stability, sustained network capacity, stream configuration, and FFmpeg output | Test from the candidate region, verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, and monitor a full test stream before leaving it unattended. |
| Transfer allowance runs out or costs exceed expectations | Continuous bitrate multiplied by runtime, other outbound traffic, provider billing units, and overage terms | Recalculate from actual video and audio bitrates and confirm the current transfer allowance and excess-use price with the provider. |
| Stream does not return after a reboot or encoder crash | Whether the process is managed by a supervisor and whether its restart behavior works | Configure a service manager or other supervisor and test recovery by restarting the process or server before relying on it. |
| Disk fills up | Local source files, recordings, logs, and available persistent storage | Keep only the files the workflow requires, monitor disk space, and size persistent storage for the media or recordings you retain. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not manage a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you uploaded, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it re-encodes nothing and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing for details. To try it, start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Copyright, reused content, and channel eligibility still matter
A VPS changes where your encoder runs; it does not change YouTube’s rules or establish that a channel is eligible to stream or monetize particular content. Make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio you broadcast, and review the current YouTube policies relevant to your channel and content. Repeating a video continuously does not, by itself, establish copyright permission or monetization eligibility.
Before leaving a stream unattended, check the live control room and applicable channel requirements, test the stream, and confirm that your stream key is configured securely. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in public logs or screenshots.
