Choose a 4K 60fps YouTube Live encoder by confirming its complete signal path, YouTube-compatible output, power requirements and fit with your camera—not by relying on a “4K” label. Then size the solar system for the encoder plus every other load, the broadcast duration and the conditions at your site. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 4K60 H.264, and 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC; a reliable uplink and a preflight test matter as much as the encoder specification.
Start with the complete 4K60 signal path
A device may accept or pass through a 4K signal without encoding it at 3840×2160 and 60 frames per second. Confirm the exact recording or encoding mode in the manufacturer’s documentation, including whether 60 fps is supported at UHD resolution and with the codec you intend to use.

Check the source connection as well: the encoder must accept your camera’s actual HDMI or SDI output format. Verify the resolution, frame rate, signal standard and connector version on both devices. A mismatch can prevent a picture, force a lower mode or interrupt a workflow even when both products are described as “4K.”
What to verify on each candidate
- Encoding at UHD 3840×2160 and 60 fps—not just 4K input, decoding or pass-through.
- Supported camera input connectors and the exact formats those inputs accept.
- Codec, ingest protocol, bitrate controls and keyframe interval.
- Published nominal and maximum power draw, stated for the encoder itself.
- Battery or DC power options, including required voltage, connector and cable.
- Site-relevant setup factors such as mounting, cooling, heat exposure and network connection.
Match the encoder’s output to YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Its current recommended settings for 4K/2160p at 60 fps are:

| Codec | YouTube 4K60 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or HEVC | 10–40 Mbps setting range |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain a stream. Test the actual uplink under the conditions and at the site where you will broadcast, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Leave practical capacity for network variation rather than treating the configured video bitrate as the only traffic on the connection.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Set these in the encoder if it exposes them, and check the resulting stream in YouTube’s live control room. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
When the encoder uses HLS
Do not assume every encoder uses the same YouTube ingest path. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide specifies H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio. Because HLS delivers video in segments, it generally has higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS. Verify that the specific encoder supports the required HLS implementation and that it fits your account and production workflow. See Google’s YouTube HLS ingest guide.

Work out power for the whole solar-powered rig
An encoder’s wattage is only one part of the load. The Prism Flex Mk II guide lists 20 W nominal and 36 W maximum for that device; neither figure is a complete solar-system recommendation. A camera, network equipment, monitors, converters and other devices also draw power, and conversion losses affect energy available to the equipment.

- Inventory every load. Record the manufacturer’s power figures for the camera, encoder, modem or router, monitors, converters and any other equipment that must run during the stream. Separate device consumption from power-supply ratings.
- Establish operating time. For each device, note how many hours it will run per broadcast and whether anything remains on between broadcasts. A watt figure becomes an energy requirement only when paired with operating time.
- Account for the actual power path. Confirm DC voltage, connectors, cable requirements and any AC conversion. Include losses from power conversion rather than assuming all stored or generated energy reaches the loads.
- Define the site and reserve target. Solar generation depends on location and season; battery storage also depends on how much backup autonomy you need. Choose these inputs before selecting panel or battery capacity.
- Check the network budget separately. Confirm the site can sustain the selected codec and bitrate while other network traffic is present. A solar supply does not solve an inadequate or unstable uplink.
Without the complete equipment list, runtime, location, season and desired backup days, there is no defensible universal panel wattage or battery capacity. The encoder specifications cited here do not size a solar installation.
Test the setup before going on air
Run a representative test using the intended camera format, codec, bitrate, audio and network route. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and broadcast, and confirm the output remains at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm the camera signal appears at the intended UHD resolution and 60 fps.
- Check that the encoder is using the chosen YouTube-compatible codec and ingest protocol.
- Verify CBR, the configured bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval where those controls are available.
- Listen for clean audio and check video motion, not only a static image.
- Observe stream health and connection stability at the actual site.
- Run the equipment from the intended battery or DC arrangement long enough to validate connectors, power behavior and the workflow.
Troubleshoot common selection and setup failures
The stream will not output 4K60
Likely cause: “4K” describes input or pass-through capability, or the selected codec/mode does not support UHD at 60 fps. Fix: Check the exact encoding-mode table and signal path in the manual; confirm the camera’s output format and every connection in between.

YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers
Likely cause: The uplink cannot sustain the configured bitrate consistently, or the ingest settings do not match the encoder. Fix: Verify protocol, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance; test at the broadcast location and monitor stream health. Do not choose a bitrate solely from a brief speed test.
The encoder is not compatible with the camera feed
Likely cause: Connector or signal-format mismatch. Fix: Compare the camera’s actual HDMI/SDI output mode with the encoder’s supported input formats. Confirm resolution and frame rate, not just connector type.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The solar system runs out sooner than expected
Likely cause: Planning used the encoder alone, omitted conversion losses or underestimated operating time and other loads. Fix: Recalculate from the full equipment inventory and actual runtime, then revisit site/season assumptions and the reserve target.

A power-supply rating is being mistaken for device draw
Likely cause: The adapter’s maximum output is being treated as the encoder’s continuous consumption. Fix: Use a published device-consumption figure for load planning; if none is established, obtain the manufacturer’s specification rather than estimating from the adapter.
