For simple dictation into a Windows text box, start with Windows Voice Typing. Choose Windows 11 Voice Access if you also want to navigate and control the PC by voice, including offline use after setup. If you mainly write in Google Docs or Slides, use their browser-based voice typing. Before buying anything, test the microphone already connected to your computer.

The practical distinctions are the job you want voice to do, whether the connection can be online, the language or locale you need, and the app where you will work. The cited official documentation does not provide comparable accuracy or speed benchmarks, so it does not establish a universal winner on either measure.

For dictation in Windows text boxes, start with Voice Typing
- Connect or enable the microphone you want to use, then check that Windows has microphone access.
- Open the app and click in the text box where you want the words to appear.
- Press Windows+H on a hardware keyboard, or open the touch keyboard and select its microphone button.
- Wait for the listening indicator, then speak. Voice Typing requires an internet connection and a working microphone.
To switch speech input language, use the taskbar input switcher or press Windows+Space. Check that the selected language and locale match your needs; support differs from Voice Access.

For hands-free PC commands, set up Voice Access
Voice Access combines text dictation with commands for controlling Windows and apps. It is a better fit than Voice Typing when you want to do more than enter text into the currently focused field.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Speech, or search Windows for Voice Access.
- During first-time setup, connect to the internet so Windows can download the language files.
- Select the microphone you intend to use and confirm that Windows permits microphone access.
- After setup, use Voice Access for dictation and voice commands. Microsoft describes its speech recognition as on-device, so it can work without an internet connection.
Microsoft’s setup page lists English (US, UK, India, New Zealand, Canada, Australia), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), German (Germany), French (France and Canada), Simplified Chinese (China), Traditional Chinese (Taiwan), Japanese, and Italian. Its FAQ summarizes command-language support more narrowly as English, German, Spanish, and French. Because the pages describe language support differently, check the live setup list for the language you need rather than assuming every listed language supports every command.
For Google Docs or Slides, use the browser workflow
- Use a current version of Chrome, Edge, or Safari and allow it to access the computer’s microphone.
- In a Google Doc, select Tools > Voice typing, then select the microphone control.
- For speaker notes in Google Slides, select Tools > Dictate speaker notes.
Google says the browser controls the speech-to-text service and how speech is processed before text is sent to Docs or Slides. This workflow is tied to those Google document features, rather than being a general Windows voice-control mode.

Test your current microphone before shopping
A working microphone is required, but the cited documentation does not establish that an external microphone is necessary or that a particular type improves results for everyone. First check the selected input, microphone permissions, and whether the device is positioned to capture your speech clearly. Voice Access setup lets you select the microphone to use.
