1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—some local AI models can run on GPUs with less than 24GB of VRAM. Quantization and CPU-plus-GPU processing let software such as llama.cpp work with models that do not fit entirely in a graphics card’s memory. But that does not mean every model will run quickly, or that local models broadly match cloud services. What works depends on the model, context length, hardware and task.
Why 24GB is not a universal minimum
Model weights take up memory, and lower-bit quantization stores them in a more compact form. That can make a model fit on a GPU that could not hold its full-precision weights. The trade-off is that quantization can affect output quality, with the result depending on the model and quantization format.

Memory use is not limited to model weights. A longer context—the amount of text the model can consider at once—also needs memory for its key-value (KV) cache. Runtime overhead adds to the total. As a result, a model may load at one context length but fail, slow down or require a smaller context at another.

What “practical” depends on
Memory capacity and context
VRAM capacity influences which model and context settings fit, but it is only one part of the decision. A smaller quantized model or shorter context may work where a larger model or longer conversation does not. Leave room for the runtime and other GPU tasks rather than treating the card’s full memory as available for model weights.
Speed and memory bandwidth
Being able to load a model is different from getting a responsive service. GPU memory bandwidth, the model, quantization, context, and how much processing spills to the CPU or system memory all affect generation speed. In a Windows Central article dated August 25, 2025, the author described a performance drop in their RTX 5080 setup when work spilled into system memory. That is evidence about that setup, not a universal measure of the slowdown on older cards. Windows Central’s discussion of GPU requirements for local AI
Software and driver support
The runtime must support the card through a compatible backend, and the operating system and drivers must also work with that combination. llama.cpp lists backends including CUDA, ROCm, Vulkan, Metal and SYCL; the list does not establish that every GPU supports every backend. Check the current project documentation for the exact card and operating system before choosing a model or buying hardware. llama.cpp documentation

A 12GB card can be a real example—not a guarantee
An RTX 3060 with 12GB of VRAM is one concrete example below the supposed 24GB threshold. It appears in user-submitted llama.cpp performance reports, and Windows Central has discussed it as a lower-cost local-AI option. Neither source establishes that it is the best choice today, that every model will run well on it, or what a used card currently costs.
The llamaperf report pages can help you find recorded configurations, including RTX 3060 12GB entries. Treat these as examples to investigate, not controlled, apples-to-apples benchmarks or a promise of a particular generation speed. Compare the model, quantization, context, backend and system configuration behind any result you use.

Can local AI replace cloud models?
It can replace cloud access for selected tasks if the local model’s quality and speed meet your needs. Local inference may suit workflows where keeping prompts on your own machine, working offline, controlling availability or avoiding per-use cloud charges matters. Whether it saves money depends on how much you use it and the cost of the hardware and electricity.

There is no basis here for claiming that older-GPU local models match current cloud models across common tasks. Test your own workload: the model’s answers, latency, context needs and reliability matter more than whether it technically loads. Cloud services may remain useful when a task needs capabilities or quality your local setup does not provide.
The practical conclusion is workload-specific: less than 24GB of VRAM can be enough for some local inference, but the model, context, backend and acceptable response time determine whether a particular older card is useful as a home-server AI device.
