Sometimes—but no app can fix every USB flash drive. Windows’ CHKDSK can attempt to repair certain file-system errors, while Windows File Recovery can try to retrieve files. Neither repairs failed hardware. First decide whether you need to save files or simply make the stick usable again; the safest next step depends on that choice.
First, identify the problem and protect your files
If the drive still opens, copy important files to another device before running repairs. Repair operations can change file-system data: Microsoft cautions that CHKDSK repairs on FAT file systems can sometimes cause data loss, and SanDisk also warns of that risk. If files are missing, deleted, or inaccessible and matter to you, prioritize recovery rather than formatting or repair attempts.

- Drive opens and files are present: copy them elsewhere, then consider a file-system check if Windows reports errors.
- Files are missing, deleted, or the drive was formatted: use a recovery approach and save recovered files to a different drive.
- Drive is not detected, appears as RAW, is physically damaged, or keeps failing: a software fix is not established; consider manufacturer support or professional recovery if the contents are valuable.
- You only want to reuse the stick and accept losing its contents: formatting may be an option once recovery is no longer needed.
When CHKDSK may help
CHKDSK is a Windows command-line utility that checks a volume for file-system metadata errors and, when run with repair parameters, attempts to fix certain errors. It is not a general USB repair app and does not establish that every drive problem is fixable. Microsoft’s documentation describes its scope and the potential for data loss on FAT repairs: Microsoft CHKDSK command reference.

Do not run a repair command blindly when the files are irreplaceable or not backed up. If Windows displays a “scan and fix” prompt, SanDisk notes that it commonly follows unsafe removal; scan if appropriate, and safely eject the drive in future: SanDisk guidance for the scan-and-fix message.

When to use file recovery instead
Windows File Recovery is for attempting to recover lost files, not repairing a USB device. Microsoft lists FAT and exFAT USB flash drives as supported in Extensive mode. For NTFS, its guidance distinguishes recent deletion, for which Regular mode is recommended, from older deletion, formatting, or corruption, for which Extensive mode is recommended. Check Microsoft’s guide for the supported cases and instructions: Recover lost files on Windows.
Do not create a partition on the USB drive after losing data; Microsoft says doing so reduces the chance of successful recovery. Recover files to another drive, not back onto the affected stick.

When formatting is appropriate
Formatting erases existing contents, so it is not the first step when you need files from the drive. SanDisk advises erasing the drive before formatting only when data recovery is not needed. If you have accepted losing the contents and the drive is otherwise detected and usable, formatting may let you reuse a logically repairable stick. See SanDisk’s guidance on formatting a USB flash drive.

- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
When an app is unlikely to be enough
A drive that is not detected, has physical damage, or remains unreliable may have a hardware fault. The cited software tools do not establish a way to repair such failures. If the files are valuable, avoid repeated attempts that could make recovery harder and seek specialist data-recovery advice. SanDisk says it does not perform data recovery itself and refers customers to recovery partners; it also provides warranty replacement support for eligible products. Replacement addresses the device, not the files on the old stick: SanDisk USB drive troubleshooting and support.
