Choose a USB-C charger by matching its supported charging protocol and output to your device maker’s guidance; choose a cable by checking its power rating and, separately, its data and video capabilities. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed charging speed or feature set. A higher-wattage USB Power Delivery (USB PD) charger does not automatically force a device to take more power: compatible devices negotiate the power they use.
1. Check what your device supports
Start with the exact device model and confirm that it charges through USB-C. Then check its manufacturer’s instructions for the required or recommended charging protocol and adapter output. Requirements can differ between models, even within the same product family.

USB-C is the connector shape. It does not, by itself, establish charging speed, data rate, or video support. Treat compatibility, charging, data, and display needs as separate checks.
2. Choose a wall charger that meets the device’s requirements
Match protocol and output, not just the wattage printed on the charger
Look for an adapter that supports the charging protocol your device requires—often USB PD for USB-C charging—and can supply the output recommended for that model. Check supported voltage and current modes as well as the headline wattage when the manufacturer specifies them.

USB PD lets a compatible source and device negotiate power; the charger’s maximum rating is a ceiling, not a promise that every connected device will charge at that speed. For USB-C-charging Macs, Apple says a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB PD can charge the Mac and recommends at least the model’s minimum recommended wattage for the best charging experience. Apple also says a Mac may charge from an adapter with higher or lower wattage than recommended. That guidance is specific to Macs; use other manufacturers’ instructions for other devices.
Account for multiple ports
With a multiport adapter, check the output available on the port you plan to use and the shared-power ratings when several devices are connected. A total-wattage figure alone may not tell you what one port can deliver in every configuration. The behavior depends on the particular charger, so consult its port and power-allocation specifications.

3. Match the cable’s charging rating to the setup
Confirm the connector ends
Choose the cable ends your devices actually need: USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C, or a device-specific option such as USB-C to Lightning. A cable can fit physically yet fail to meet the charging or feature requirements of your setup.
Check watts, current, and any high-current requirement
Compare the cable’s stated power or current rating with the charger and device. The cable can limit the current available. For example, Google’s guide for its specific 30W USB-C charger says currents above 3A require a cable rated above 3A, such as a 5A cable with an e-marker. This is guidance for that charger, not a rule that every USB-C charging setup needs a 5A cable.

USB-IF’s compliance update effective March 2022 specifies 60W or 240W power-rating marks for USB-C-to-USB-C cables seeking USB-IF compliance. These are requirements within that compliance program; the absence of a visible mark alone does not establish that a retail cable is unsafe.
USB PD Revision 3.1, announced by USB-IF in 2021, enabled power delivery up to 240W with full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector configurations. The revision added 28V, 36V, and 48V fixed-voltage levels for up to 140W, 180W, and 240W, respectively. Those are standard capability figures, not a recommendation to use a 240W charger with any particular device.

- MULTI-LENGTH SETUP FOR REAL SPACES: Use shorter cables for chargers, power banks, or car use, medium lengths for desks and couches, and the 10 ft cable when the outlet is farther away.
- USB-C TO USB-C COMPATIBILITY: Works with many USB-C devices and USB-C chargers. Please confirm your device uses a USB-C port and that 60W meets your charging requirement before purchase.
- CHARGING-FIRST EVERYDAY CABLES: A practical choice for daily charging and basic use. If you need a cable for higher-wattage laptop charging, video output, or advanced dock/monitor setups, please check your device requirements first.
4. Check data and video support separately
Charging capacity does not tell you how quickly a cable transfers files or whether it supports a display. If you need fast transfers, USB4, or monitor/video output, select a cable whose specifications explicitly cover the data rate or video function you need. Do not infer those capabilities from USB-C connectors, a wattage mark, or the fact that a cable charges your device.
USB-IF compliance documents describe requirements for cable assemblies, but those requirements are not an independent test of every retail cable or verification of a specific product’s advertised performance. Check the actual cable’s stated capabilities for your intended devices and use.

5. Check safety and certification claims
- Buy an adapter and cable that comply with applicable regulations and safety standards in your country or region. A particular certification logo is not a universal guarantee; check the product’s relevant certification or listing.
- Inspect accessories before use. Google warns that damaged cables or chargers, moisture, or equipment that does not comply with USB Type-C requirements can cause injury or damage. Replace damaged accessories and follow the manufacturer’s handling and ventilation instructions; Google advises keeping the charger and device ventilated while charging.
- If a seller claims USB-IF certification, check USB-IF’s Integrators List. USB-IF says products using its certified USB logos must pass applicable compliance testing, appear on that list, and meet the relevant trademark agreement. Not every USB-C accessory is claimed to be USB-IF certified.
6. Use this buying checklist
- Identify the device: confirm the model, charging port, supported protocol, and maker-recommended adapter output.
- Select the charger: match the protocol and output; for a multiport model, check per-port and shared-power ratings for your intended setup.
- Select the cable: confirm the ends and that its power/current rating supports the setup; check for an e-marker when the charger’s requirements call for a cable rated above 3A.
- Match extra features: verify the cable’s stated data rate, USB4, or video support if you need those functions.
- Verify safety and condition: check applicable local compliance, investigate certification claims, and do not use damaged or wet charging accessories.
- Choose practical details: select a length, flexibility, durability, and port count that suit how you charge, without treating those features as proof of electrical or data performance.
