What Amazon Fire Kids offers
Age-oriented models and a child-focused setup
Amazon’s September 1, 2026 guide groups Fire 7, Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 Kids models for ages 3–7, and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro and Fire HD 10 Kids Pro for ages 6–12. These are Amazon’s suggested age bands, not a measure of any individual child’s readiness. Kids Pro adds parent-approved app and eBook requests and configurable web access. Model specifications and included offers can vary, so verify the exact listing in your market. Amazon’s Kids tablet guide.

Controls are separate from the subscription
Amazon Kids child profiles can use controls such as time limits and educational goals without a Kids+ subscription. Kids+ is a paid service that adds premium, age-filtered content; any included trial or subscription period and its renewal terms are offer- and region-dependent. Amazon’s UK help page says Amazon Kids and Kids+ support up to four child profiles. Amazon Kids and Kids+ help.

Parents can use the free Parent Dashboard on the web or as an app to manage profiles, content, schedules, activity, time limits, educational goals and browser settings. Browsing can be switched off, filtered, or limited to hand-selected sites. But Amazon says Kids+ age filters do not extend to outside apps: a streaming or other third-party app may need its own parental settings. Amazon Parent Dashboard help.

What an iPad offers for a child
Set up a child account rather than handing over an adult account
Apple’s child-safety guidance says a Child Account in Family Sharing is required for children under 13 and is available for children up to age 18. Apple describes age-based safeguards and parental controls including Screen Time. The parent’s setup is central: create or use the child account, add it to Family Sharing, then configure the family settings. Apple child safety information.
Choose iPad when the apps or family setup call for Apple
If your child needs particular apps or services, check their availability on the exact iPad and confirm that your family’s account setup supports them. Apple’s current lineup spans iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad and iPad mini; this comparison does not establish a current price or specification match between any one iPad and a Fire Kids model. Check the status of announced controls
On June 8, 2026, Apple announced Ask to Browse, Time Allowances and a redesigned Screen Time, with availability planned after iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 updates in fall 2026. Apple said availability was subject to change. Treat these as announced features unless they have shipped and are available on the child’s device and software version. How to decide for your family
Choose Fire Kids if
- You want a child-oriented setup with an included bumper and Amazon’s Parent Dashboard.
- The age-targeted model options suit your child, and the available apps meet their needs.
- The current Kids+ offer is useful to your family after you check its duration, renewal terms and regional availability.
Choose iPad if
- Your child needs Apple apps or services, or your family already manages devices and accounts in Apple’s ecosystem.
- You are prepared to set up Family Sharing and actively configure Screen Time and the child’s account.
- You are comfortable choosing a separate protective case and checking coverage for the specific model.
Compare the real ownership cost
Before buying either device, compare the exact model and storage configuration, a suitable case, paid content after any introductory offer, and the warranty or repair coverage available where you live. Current prices and directly comparable configurations are not established here, so use the live listings and coverage terms rather than assuming either tablet costs less.
Controls still need a parent
Neither a filtered content catalog nor account-level controls can replace household rules and periodic review. Check the settings inside the apps a child actually uses. Amazon explicitly notes that its tools are not a substitute for parental involvement. Amazon Parent Dashboard help.
