How to Choose a TV: OLED vs. Mini-LED vs. QLED

OLED, Mini-LED and QLED describe different TV technologies. Match them to your room and habits, then compare measurements and features for the exact model and size.

Choose by room and viewing habits, not by the label alone. OLED is a strong fit for dark-room films, deep blacks, wide seating and fast pixel response. Mini-LED and QLED LCDs can suit bright rooms and sustained bright images, but local dimming may create halos around highlights or subtitles. QLED and Mini-LED are not competing versions of the same technology: QLED describes quantum-dot color enhancement, while Mini-LED describes a smaller backlight used for more precise dimming. Some TVs use both.

What do OLED, Mini-LED and QLED mean?

OLED controls light at each pixel

An OLED pixel produces its own light, so it can switch off for black. That pixel-level control is why OLED can deliver very deep blacks and strong dark-room contrast. OLED sets generally have fast pixel transitions and broad viewing angles, though brightness and other performance vary by model. Static graphics left onscreen for long periods can cause burn-in over time. RTINGS explains the differences between OLED and LED TVs.

Mini-LED is a backlight type

A Mini-LED TV is an LCD television lit by many small backlight LEDs. Local dimming can improve contrast by adjusting zones of the backlight, but the zones do not control light as precisely as individual OLED pixels. A bright object against a dark background—or a subtitle—may show a halo. The amount of dimming control and the visibility of artifacts depend on the exact TV.

QLED describes color enhancement, not backlight size

QLED TVs use quantum dots to enhance color in an LED-backlit LCD. The term does not tell you whether the backlight is Mini-LED; some QLED televisions use Mini-LED backlights, while others use different LED backlights. Check the full specifications and independent testing for the particular model rather than treating QLED and Mini-LED as mutually exclusive categories. RTINGS compares QLED and OLED TVs.

Which type suits your room and viewing habits?

What matters most Where to start What to verify on the exact model
Dark-room films and deep blacks OLED is a strong starting point because it controls light at the pixel level. Look for reviews of dark scenes, subtitles and star fields; local-dimming LCDs can show halos.
Bright room or sustained bright images Consider Mini-LED or QLED LCDs, but do not assume the category guarantees brightness. Check measured real-scene brightness, reflection handling and performance in a room with direct light. Current OLED models can also be bright.
Seats spread across a wide area OLED generally offers broad viewing angles. LCD viewing angles vary. Check whether color and contrast hold up from your side seats; some viewing-angle enhancements trade off against contrast.
Fast gameplay OLED’s fast pixel response can be an advantage. Compare refresh rate, input lag, variable refresh rate (VRR), HDMI inputs and console or PC requirements. A more advanced backlight does not by itself mean faster pixel transitions.
News channels, desktop use or other persistent graphics Factor in how long static logos, tickers or interface elements remain onscreen. OLED can develop burn-in from static content over time. LED-backlit sets can also age or develop panel uniformity problems; neither category is failure-proof.
Price and size Compare actual sets at the size you want; LED options range from lower-priced models to premium Mini-LED sets. Price and selection vary by size, model and market. Technology labels do not establish value or features.

How to compare specific TVs before buying

  1. Set your priorities. Decide how important dark-room contrast, bright-room visibility, wide seating, gaming, persistent graphics and price are for your household.
  2. Compare the exact size and model. Performance can differ substantially within each category and between sizes in a product line. Confirm the regional model code, availability and specifications rather than relying on a series name.
  3. Read measurements and scene-specific reviews. For dark-room use, look for black-level performance and halos around subtitles or bright points. For bright rooms, check real-scene brightness and reflections. For gaming, check response, refresh rate, input lag, VRR and HDMI support.
  4. Check the full feature set and ownership terms. Compare HDR formats, warranty, return terms and current price at your desired size. OLED, Mini-LED and QLED alone do not specify these details.

Why brightness numbers do not establish a category winner

Brightness is model- and test-dependent, not a guaranteed property of OLED, Mini-LED or QLED. In RTINGS’ 2025 HDR hallway test examples, the Sony BRAVIA 9 Mini-LED measured 802 cd/m² and the LG G5 WOLED measured 1,120 cd/m². In RTINGS’ comparison of 2025 flagship models, published in 2026, the LG G5 example measured 1,120 cd/m² and the Samsung QN90F QLED measured 1,019 cd/m². These are readings for named televisions in a particular test context, not technology-wide averages or proof of which type is brighter overall. Check measurements and reviews for the model you plan to buy. See RTINGS’ TV comparison tool.

Make the choice that fits your use

Adam Babcock, an RTINGS author, puts it plainly: “there’s no one-size-fits-all winner.” Start with your room, seating and viewing habits, then compare the specific TVs that fit your size and budget. OLED is a sensible first comparison for dark-room contrast and wide seating; Mini-LED or QLED LCDs merit a close look for bright rooms, while their local-dimming artifacts and model-specific performance deserve attention.
