To tell whether an online deal is genuinely good, compare the exact same product and variant at several retailers, check its recent price history, and compare the full checkout total. A discount badge or “was/now” price is a claim—not proof of a bargain.
How to check an online deal step by step
- Identify the exact product. Match the manufacturer and model number, then check details such as size, color, capacity, condition, and included accessories. Similar-looking variants are not like-for-like comparisons. The FTC’s online-shopping advice recommends noting the model and product details before comparing.
- Compare several sellers. Search for that exact variant at multiple retailers and on more than one comparison site, then verify the listing on the retailer’s own site. Results can differ between comparison sites, and paid placement may affect rankings; a top result is not necessarily the lowest price. - Look at price history. A history chart or alert can show whether today’s price is unusual for the item, rather than merely lower than a retailer’s chosen reference price. Which? suggests CamelCamelCamel for Amazon and PriceRunner for broader comparison. Check that a chart covers the right product variant and region; price-history services may not track every seller or listing. The tools are examples, not a guarantee of complete coverage.
- Compare what you will actually pay. Include delivery, handling, taxes, unavoidable fees, and any membership or minimum-spend requirement. Check the offer terms as well as the headline price. The FTC advises comparing the full cost. In the UK, the CMA’s price-transparency summary, updated 7 January 2026, says traders must show the total price up front, including charges consumers cannot avoid. That is UK guidance, not a statement of law everywhere.
- Check the seller, condition, and returns. Confirm whether the item is new, refurbished, vintage, or close-out; these terms can mean it is not equivalent to a new product. Review the seller’s reputation, delivery promise, and return terms, and check authorization where it matters. The FTC warns that an unusually low price on an expensive branded product can be a sign of counterfeit or stolen goods.
- Check price protection before deciding. A retailer’s price-match policy, or a refund or credit if the price drops soon after purchase, may make an offer more attractive even when it is not the lowest current price. Read the policy’s eligibility and timing conditions.
How to judge a claimed discount
A percentage-off figure depends on its reference price. An RRP is a manufacturer’s suggested price; by itself, it does not show that the retailer actually sold the item at that price. Compare current offers for the same model with its recent market price instead of treating a “was” label as evidence of value.

Which? illustrates the point with a washing machine listed by four shops at £250: one seller calling its £250 offer “now £250, was £300” does not make that price a standout deal. This is an example in Which?’s guide to checking Black Friday deals, not a market statistic.

There is no discount percentage that is automatically good for every product. The answer depends on the item’s price history, competing offers, condition, total cost, and whether you need it now.

Compare the offers that matter

Make the decision from those comparisons, not from the largest advertised saving. If the item is not urgent, its price history and alerts can help you decide whether to buy now or wait.
