Choose by the game loop you want, then narrow Steam’s catalog with tags and filters, compare a few finalists, and check reviews and device compatibility before buying. “Turn-based” can mean a story-led party RPG, a tactical squad game, a sprawling strategy campaign, or a deck-driven run; the label alone won’t tell you which one fits.
Start with the kind of turn-based play you want
Before searching, decide what you want to spend most of your time doing. These categories overlap, but they make a useful first shortlist:

- Story-led RPG: build characters or a party, explore, make narrative choices, and fight encounters along the way.
- Tactical combat: position units and weigh movement, abilities, and risks in individual encounters or squad missions.
- Campaign or empire strategy: manage a faction, economy, resources, or campaign map over a longer span.
- Deck- or run-based play: make turn-by-turn decisions around cards, build a run, and often start again after a loss.
- A hybrid: combine elements such as RPG progression and tactical battles, or strategy and deckbuilding.
These are practical descriptions, not a single exhaustive Steam taxonomy. A game can fit several at once, so think about its main loop rather than relying on one genre label.
Use Steam search and tags to narrow the field
Start with a recognizable phrase in Steam’s turn-based RPG search, then refine the results with tags and filters. Broad searches can return a large, mixed catalog; specific combinations are more useful than browsing a long list based on one label. Steam’s search can sort by relevance, release date, name, lowest or highest price, user reviews, and Steam Deck compatibility review date. Choose the sort that serves your current question rather than treating one ordering as a quality ranking.

Steam tags describe more than genre: they can cover mechanics and features, themes and moods, visual properties, and player support. Steamworks says a game needs at least five tags before launch and recommends up to 20; only the top 20 are visible to users and used by Steam to influence store visibility. Developers, eligible players, and moderators can apply tags, and their order and weight matter. Tags and tag profiles can change, so treat them as discovery clues, not a definitive quality verdict.
Try pairing a broad genre tag with details that matter to you—for example, a combat or campaign feature plus single-player, multiplayer, story-rich, or difficult. Then inspect each finalist’s store page: its tag order may not capture every unusual mechanic, and the description or gameplay footage can clarify what the game actually asks you to do.

Compare finalists on the parts of play that matter
Once you have a manageable shortlist, compare each game against your preferences rather than trying to find a universally best title. Steam’s tag categories make it possible to look beyond genre, but the store page and reviews are where you can check the details.

These questions help separate games that share a tag but offer different rhythms. A long campaign may be appealing if you want a sustained project; a mission-based structure or run-based game may better suit shorter, self-contained sessions.

Read review text as evidence, not as a prediction
Steam describes a game’s review score as a categorization based on the percentage of positive reviews. That aggregate is a quick screening cue, not a forecast of whether you will enjoy a particular game. Reviews are more useful when they address the qualities you care about.
Read recent positive and negative reviews for specific evidence about tactical depth, pacing, story, difficulty curve, interface clarity, performance, multiplayer activity, or update history. Look for details that match your priorities rather than treating one reviewer’s preference as a universal verdict. No single review percentage or review-count cutoff establishes a good fit for every player.

Check Steam Deck and desktop compatibility
On Steam Deck
Check the game’s compatibility badge and open its detailed compatibility information. Valve’s categories distinguish games that work well by default from those that may need manual configuration: Verified means it works great by default, while Playable means it works but may require adjustments, such as changing controls or using the touchscreen for a launcher. Unsupported means Steam currently does not consider it playable on Deck; the store page can show which requirements were not met. A game may also have an Unknown status if it has not been reviewed. Badges and details are title-specific and can change.
Compatibility is separate from personal fit: a badge does not tell you whether the interface, text size, genre, or session structure suits you. A Playable title may still work for you if its required manual steps are acceptable.

Check the game’s system requirements and supported operating systems on its store page. Steam Support notes that compatibility involves both hardware requirements and operating system support; do not assume a game will run just because it appears in search results.
Keep discovering without losing track of candidates
If your first search is still too broad, Steam offers personalized recommendations based on gameplay, curator reviews, and discovery tools. Its discovery features allow filtering across tags, product type, Steamworks features, operating system, and language. You can also wishlist, follow, or ignore products to manage what you want to revisit, keep an eye on, or exclude. These tools help refine a shortlist; they do not replace checking each game’s current details.
Prices, discounts, release dates, review proportions, search rankings, and compatibility information can change. Verify the listing shortly before purchase. Steam’s refund FAQ explains the current policy; eligibility depends on the live terms and the circumstances of the purchase, so do not assume every game can be tried and returned.
