First decide what you want to access—Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) shares, government securities, a collective investment scheme, or online forex and CFDs—then check the regulated entity behind the app, how your assets are held, the full costs, and the risks. These products use different routes and are not interchangeable.
Start with the investment, not the app
An app is an interface; it does not by itself tell you what you are buying, which company provides the service, or how an asset is held. The Capital Markets Authority of Kenya (CMA) describes online forex as internet-based foreign-exchange trading that can include contracts for difference (CFDs) based on an underlying foreign asset. NSE securities, Treasury bills and bonds, collective investment schemes, and leveraged forex or CFDs therefore need separate comparisons.

Before choosing among these routes, consider your financial objectives, income, constraints, and tolerance for loss. The CMA’s beginner guidance recommends assessing those factors and learning about the products available before investing.
Check the legal entity and license
Search the CMA’s live licensee register for the company named in the app’s account-opening documents—not just the app or brand name. Check that the license category matches the service being offered, and verify the status again shortly before opening an account. A brand can differ from the licensed legal entity, and a register entry is not an endorsement of a provider’s costs, service quality, or suitability for you.

The register includes online forex entities such as EGM Securities Limited (trading as FX Pesa), Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited, HFM Investments Limited (HF Markets), Exness KE Limited, and Ava Trade Kenya Limited. These are examples of register entries, not recommendations or a ranking; check the live register for current details.
For online forex, check the broker category
The CMA distinguishes non-dealing brokers, which link clients to the market for a commission or spread markup, from dealing brokers, which act as principal and market maker. Confirm the category and legal entity shown in the register, then read the provider’s terms to understand how it handles your orders and charges for the service.

For listed securities, check the CDA relationship
The CMA says a CDA authorized by the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation (CDSC) may be a stockbroker, investment bank, or custodian bank. A CDS account supports electronic holding, clearing, and settlement of securities traded through the NSE. Ask which authorized entity opens and administers the account, and retain receipts, transaction statements, contracts, and CDS statements.

Compare the complete cost of your intended use
Ask for the provider’s current fee schedule and apply it to the way you expect to invest or trade. The CMA says online forex providers may charge through a portion of the spread or a set fee. Depending on the provider and product, check whether other charges apply to funding, withdrawals, currency conversion, inactivity, or holding a position; do not assume that every provider charges each of these.

- For NSE securities, check the charges that apply to your intended transactions and account arrangement.
- For Treasury securities and funds, ask for the applicable fees and any costs associated with managing or redeeming the investment.
- For forex or CFDs, look beyond a headline spread: check the applicable fee, conversion, funding, and position-holding terms.
There is no substantiated, current side-by-side tariff for the named apps here, so a price-based winner cannot be established. Do not rely on old fee figures or an advertised minimum as a measure of total cost.
Check how you can access government securities
The CMA says eligible customers of local commercial banks may invest directly in Treasury bonds through the CBK and avoid additional fees. The CBK’s Kenya National Financial Inclusion Strategy 2025–2028 reports that Dhow CSD launched in September 2023. That launch date does not establish today’s features or who is eligible: confirm the current process, requirements, and charges with the CBK or the relevant provider before acting.

Ease of use does not make an investment safe. The CMA states: “All investments carry risk; some very much more than others.” Online forex may involve CFDs, and speculative trading can expose you to substantial losses. The CMA advises beginners not to invest borrowed money and cautions against putting more than they can afford to lose into speculation.

The CBK’s 2025 strategy reports that collective investment scheme assets under management were KES 389.2 billion on December 31, 2024, up from KES 56.8 billion in 2018. Those market-wide figures provide context about the sector; they do not measure the quality of an app, fund, or provider.
Verify the service details that matter to you
Before funding an account, ask each provider questions specific to your use. These details can change, so confirm them directly rather than assuming an app has a feature or service level you need.
- Which payment methods can you use, and in which currency?
- What are the steps and expected timing for deposits and withdrawals?
- What support channels are available, and how can you escalate a complaint or dispute?
- Which devices or operating systems are supported, and what account-security controls are available?
- For the product you want, what are the account, custody, order, and redemption processes?
Use these steps before opening an account
- Write down the product you want. Decide whether your goal is listed securities, government securities, a collective investment scheme, or online forex or CFDs.
- Identify the provider’s legal entity. Find the company name in the account documents and match it to the relevant current CMA register entry and license category.
- Trace the account and asset arrangement. For NSE securities, establish who administers the CDS account; for government securities, confirm the current CBK or intermediary route and your eligibility.
- Read the current costs and terms. Use the provider’s fee schedule and product terms to estimate costs for the activity you actually intend to undertake.
- Check the risk and practical service details. Make sure you understand possible losses, access and withdrawal conditions, and how to contact the provider or raise a dispute.
Recognize warning signs
Promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns, pressure to send money, and a provider whose required license cannot be verified are reasons to stop and investigate. The CBK warns that unlicensed online forex platforms may expose the public to fraud and loss, and advises checking licensing with the CBK or CMA. The CMA also advises dealing only with licensed institutions.
