How to Choose a Tablet for Drawing, Note-Taking and Multitasking

Start with the apps you need, then match screen size, pen compatibility, multitasking and accessory costs to the way you work.

The right tablet is the one that runs your essential apps, supports a compatible pen and fits the way you work and carry it. Start with your software and daily tasks; then compare screen size, exact stylus compatibility, multitasking support and the full cost of the tablet plus accessories. An iPad, Galaxy Tab or Windows 2-in-1 can each make sense, but no one platform is the universal choice.

Start with the apps and workflow you need

List the drawing, handwriting, PDF-markup and productivity apps you actually use, along with the files and tasks you need to handle at the same time. Check that each essential app runs on the operating system you are considering. If a must-have app is platform-specific—or you require a desktop-class Windows application—that may settle the choice before you compare hardware.

Be specific about what “multitasking” means for you. It might be keeping notes beside a reference image, switching between a drawing app and a browser, typing into documents with a keyboard, or extending your work onto an external display. Those needs call for different features, and operating-system branding alone does not guarantee that a particular tablet supports them.

Choose a screen size you can work on and carry

A larger display gives a drawing canvas more room and can make side-by-side apps more comfortable. The tradeoff is a bigger device to carry; include the keyboard, cover and stand in that calculation, not just the tablet. Consider whether you will mostly work at a desk or take the device with you all day, and picture an actual canvas or split-screen layout before settling on a size.

Microsoft’s US-market Surface comparison illustrates the portability-versus-workspace tradeoff. It lists a 12-inch Surface Pro starting at 1.5 lb (686 g) and a 13-inch model starting at 1.97 lb (895 g). These are tablet starting weights, not weights for a complete keyboard-and-pen setup. The page describes the 12-inch model as oriented toward mobility and the 13-inch toward expanded workspace and heavier multitasking; availability and features can vary by region. See Microsoft’s Surface comparison.

Display specifications also differ within a product family. Microsoft lists LCD for the 12-inch Surface Pro and OLED or LCD HDR options for the 13-inch, alongside different processor, memory and storage configurations. Treat those as model-specific configuration details, not promises that apply to every unit sold under the Surface Pro name.

Match the pen to the exact tablet generation

Do not assume that a stylus works with every tablet in a family. Confirm compatibility for the precise model and generation, then check whether the pen is included, how it charges and stores, and whether replacement nibs are available. If your drawing or handwriting workflow depends on pressure, tilt or another pen feature, verify that the exact pen and the app support it. Compatibility lists establish which devices work together; they do not, by themselves, compare drawing feel or latency.

Apple Pencil and iPad

Apple lists compatibility separately for each Apple Pencil type and iPad model. For example, Apple Pencil Pro is listed for iPad mini (A17 Pro), current M2/M3/M4 Air sizes and M4/M5 Pro sizes, while Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports a different, broader set. Match the named iPad generation to the named Pencil before purchase rather than relying on “iPad” as a compatibility shortcut. Check Apple’s Apple Pencil compatibility list.

Samsung S Pen and Galaxy Tab

Do not assume an S Pen is included just because a tablet is called a Galaxy Tab. Samsung’s US comparison shows specifications for the Galaxy Tab models it currently displays, but the exact model, storage tier, region and seller configuration matter. Confirm the model number and included accessories on the specific listing or with Samsung. Use Samsung’s US Galaxy Tab comparison to orient your shortlist.

Surface Slim Pen

Microsoft identifies the Surface Slim Pen as a separate accessory in its US Surface guidance. Check compatibility for the exact Surface configuration and add the pen to your budget rather than assuming it comes in the box. Review Microsoft’s Surface accessory and model guidance.

Check what multitasking means on the model

For split-screen work, confirm how the specific tablet handles multiple apps and windows. For external-monitor use, check whether it can extend the workspace with app windows or only mirror the tablet screen, and whether you need an adapter. A compatible keyboard and trackpad may also matter if multitasking includes substantial typing or pointer work.

iPad: windowing and external displays vary by model

Apple describes iPadOS 26 windowing and Stage Manager, including use with an external display for additional workspace. However, Apple’s USB-C support documentation names the iPad model groups and resolutions supported for extended displays and multiple app windows; some monitors require an adapter. Check the model-specific list before buying for a desk-and-monitor setup rather than assuming every iPad offers the same experience. Read Apple’s iPadOS 26 announcement and check its external-display guidance.

Windows 2-in-1: compare the complete configuration

A Windows 2-in-1 may be the better fit when your workflow depends on Windows applications, but compare the specific processor, memory and storage configuration rather than the family name alone. Microsoft lists a 12-inch Surface Pro configuration with Snapdragon X Plus, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB UFS storage; 13-inch configurations offer different chip, memory and removable-SSD options. Its comparison reports, for the 12-inch model, up to 16 hours of local-video playback and up to 12 hours of active web use; for the 13-inch, up to 14 hours of local video and up to 10 hours of active web use. These are Microsoft’s estimates under its stated usage categories, not independent test results or a direct measure of drawing time. Check Microsoft’s current Surface configurations and battery estimates.

Compare the total setup, not the tablet alone

Before comparing headline device prices, build the cost of the setup you would actually use. Include the tablet, compatible pen, keyboard or cover, stand, storage you need and any hub or display adapter required for your workflow. Pen and keyboard bundles can vary by model, region and seller, so verify the exact contents of the listing rather than inferring them from a product family.

Also check internal storage, microSD expansion where available, Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, external storage support and the ports needed for your accessories. Samsung’s live US comparison lists storage and expandable-storage details across the models it displays; confirm that a feature applies to the exact model you are considering. Current retail prices, stock and bundle contents are not established by manufacturer comparison pages, so check the local seller and warranty details close to purchase.

A practical shortlist in six steps

  1. Write down the workflow. Name the drawing and note apps, file types and simultaneous tasks you need. Rule out operating systems that cannot run an essential app.
  2. Pick a workable screen size. Imagine your real canvas or split-screen layout, then consider the complete carry weight with keyboard and cover.
  3. Verify the pen. Match the precise tablet generation to a compatible stylus, confirm relevant pen features and check whether it is included or sold separately.
  4. Confirm multitasking support. If you need an external monitor, verify model-specific extended-display support, resolution and adapter requirements.
  5. Compare configurations. Check storage, expansion, connectivity, display, ports and keyboard or stand options for each exact model.
  6. Check the actual purchase listing. Confirm local price, stock, warranty, model number and included accessories before ordering.
