For handheld play, use the Joy-Con 2 controllers attached to the console. For docked TV play—or tabletop play when you want a separate pad—the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is the dedicated option. You can also pair original Switch controllers wirelessly, but original Joy-Con do not attach to Switch 2.

Nintendo’s Play Mode Options on Nintendo Switch 2 describes Joy-Con 2 as attached for handheld use and detachable for tabletop or TV play. Its guidance also says a Pro Controller can be used for TV play without detaching the Joy-Con 2.

What Joy-Con 2 offer
Joy-Con 2 are the controllers designed to attach to Switch 2. They detach for tabletop and TV play, and the supported way to use them—paired vertically or individually horizontally—depends on the game. Nintendo lists motion controls and HD rumble, as well as mouse control in compatible games.
Nintendo Support publishes up to 20 hours of continuous use for Joy-Con 2, depending on software and controller activity, and approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge. Joy-Con 2 work only with Switch 2. They are the relevant choice when you need controllers attached for handheld play or a game’s compatible mouse function; the Pro Controller does not replace those attached controls.
When a Switch 2 Pro Controller makes sense
Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller when you want a separate controller for docked TV or tabletop play. It pairs wirelessly or by connecting to the dock, according to Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller FAQ. It is Switch 2-only.

Can you use original Switch controllers?
Yes: Nintendo lists both original Switch Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller as wirelessly compatible with Switch 2. The important limitation is physical fit: original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, so they are not an option for attached handheld play. Compatibility is not a promise that every old controller feature works in every game.

Also check charging accessories by generation. Nintendo specifically says the original Joy-Con Charging Grip is not compatible with Joy-Con 2. Do not assume that an older charging accessory works with the new controllers; consult Nintendo’s Switch accessory compatibility guidance for the item in question.
How many controllers can connect?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can generally pair with Switch 2, though the practical maximum can vary with controller type and features. That figure is a console-level pairing guideline, not a guarantee that every game supports eight players or that each paired controller counts as a separate player. Check Nintendo’s controller pairing guidance and the game’s player and controller requirements.

What to check before buying a third-party controller
A third-party controller may be an alternative, but compatibility depends on the exact model and the functions you need. Verify the manufacturer’s current Switch 2 compatibility information before buying, especially for:

- Connection method and whether it works in your intended mode.
- Motion controls, if a game requires them.
- NFC or amiibo support, if you use it.
- Console wake behavior and vibration.
- Game-specific inputs, including any functions that rely on Joy-Con 2 mouse control or the Pro Controller’s C and GL/GR buttons.
Do not assume that a controller advertised for the original Switch supports every Switch 2 feature. No single third-party model is recommended here because complete, model-specific compatibility is not established.

Make the choice by setup, not a universal ranking
- Mostly handheld: use the included Joy-Con 2 attached to the console.
- Mostly docked, and you want a separate pad: consider the Switch 2 Pro Controller.
- Tabletop or local multiplayer: Joy-Con 2 detach and can be used in supported configurations; add a separate controller if that better fits how you play.
- Reusing hardware: original Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller pair wirelessly, but old Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2.
- Buying for a specific game: check whether it requires mouse control, motion controls, particular inputs, or a specific number of controllers.
Nintendo does not provide a comparative comfort, latency, durability, or value test in the cited support material, so those considerations depend on the player’s hands, setup, and budget rather than a supported universal verdict.
