How to Choose a Streaming Service for Documentaries

Find the right documentary streaming service by checking must-watch titles, catalog focus, total cost, local availability, device support and free options.

Start with the documentaries you want to watch, then check whether each is available in your country before subscribing. Compare each service’s catalog focus, full billing cost, device support, offline viewing and free options—not just its advertised library size.

How to choose the right documentary service

  1. List your must-watch titles and subjects. Search each service’s current catalog for specific films and series. A documentary category or large library claim does not confirm that a particular title is available in your country.
  2. Match the service’s focus to your viewing. Curiosity Stream is the most documentary-centered option in this group. PBS emphasizes documentary series and producers. Netflix includes documentaries within a broader entertainment service, while Criterion Channel is a film service with a documentary collection and extras.
  3. Compare the total cost. Check monthly and annual billing, any separate channel fee or required membership, and the terms shown at checkout. A lower monthly equivalent on an annual plan means paying for the year upfront.
  4. Check access and playback features. Confirm service availability where you live, support for your TV or streaming device, downloads if you watch offline, and simultaneous-screen rules.
  5. Try free access first. PBS offers general-audience video without charge through its app, station websites and pbs.org/video. Check whether those options have the programs you want before paying for a separate subscription or channel.

Compare the services by what they offer

Service Best fit Current published price What to verify
Curiosity Stream Viewers looking for a documentary-first service. Its plans page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists Standard at $5.99 monthly or $49.99 annually (shown as $4.17 per month when billed annually), and Smart Bundle at $11.99 monthly or $79.99 annually (shown as $6.67 per month when billed annually). Source. Its “thousands of documentaries” description is the service’s own claim, not an independently audited count. Check the live catalog for specific titles. The plans page advertises downloads and simultaneous viewing on different screens; confirm the current plan details.
PBS Viewers interested in PBS documentary brands, or those who want to start with free PBS video. PBS Help lists its PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel at $3.99 per month. The page was accessed October 4, 2026; confirm the channel price and any underlying Amazon membership requirement, since the page’s base-membership fee may be out of date. Source. Free PBS app and station-site video, PBS Passport, and paid PBS-branded Prime Video channels are distinct access options; their available programs are not identical. PBS names Ken Burns, NOVA, FRONTLINE, AMERICAN MASTERS, NATURE, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, INDEPENDENT LENS and POV among its documentary offerings. Check the app’s support for your device.
Netflix Viewers who want documentaries alongside a wider entertainment catalog. Not stated here; prices can change. Check Netflix’s current local plans before subscribing. Netflix’s official U.S. site has documentary film and series categories, but the categories do not establish that a title is available in your country. Browse documentary series and documentary films.
Criterion Channel Film viewers interested in documentaries as part of a broader collection of classic and contemporary cinema. The Criterion Collection FAQ, accessed October 4, 2026, lists $10.99 monthly or $99.99 annually, with a seven-day trial. Confirm current checkout terms. Source. Criterion says the Channel is available only in the U.S. and Canada, and not every Criterion Collection release streams on the service. It lists supported devices and requirements in its FAQ. Its documentary collection page showed 131 results when accessed October 4, 2026; that dynamic collection is not a count of currently streamable Channel titles. Browse the documentary collection.

What each service is suited to

Curiosity Stream: a documentary-first catalog

Curiosity Stream is the clearest fit if you want a service centered on documentaries and its current subjects match your interests. Its plans page advertises downloads and simultaneous viewing on different screens. Treat the library-size description as a broad positioning claim, not proof that a particular film or series is available.

PBS: free video, member access and a separate paid channel

PBS’s free app, pbs.org/video and member-station websites provide general-audience video without charge. PBS Passport is a separate member benefit; the PBS Documentaries channel on Prime Video is another, separately paid product. Their catalogs overlap, but are not identical. The paid channel highlights programs and producers including Ken Burns, NOVA, FRONTLINE, AMERICAN MASTERS, NATURE, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, INDEPENDENT LENS and POV.

Netflix: documentaries within a general streaming service

Netflix makes documentaries available as film and series categories within a larger entertainment catalog. It may suit households that also want other kinds of shows and films, but use the category pages to search and then confirm availability in your location. Do not assume that a title shown in one country’s catalog will appear in another.

Criterion Channel: documentary cinema within a wider film collection

Criterion describes its Channel as “an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary films from Hollywood and around the world, many not available anywhere else.” The Collection’s FAQ also describes documentaries, shorts and supplementary material; its figures of more than 500 shorts and 5,000 supplementary features refer to extras, not feature-documentary counts. The service is not documentary-only, and the Channel is available only in the U.S. and Canada.

Check availability before you pay

Streaming rights change over time and vary by country. Search the exact title in the service’s live catalog, preferably while signed in from the location where you will watch. For a planned movie night or a series you intend to follow, check again close to subscribing: a genre page, collection page or service-wide library figure cannot guarantee current access to one title.

Do not compare library-size claims as though they were a standardized head-to-head count. Services may describe their catalogs differently, and the Criterion documentary collection’s result count is not the same thing as a count of streamable Channel documentaries. The useful comparison is whether each service has the programs you want now.

Calculate the real cost and check device support

Compare the amount billed, not only a monthly equivalent. Curiosity Stream’s annual prices are billed yearly, while its page also lists monthly plans. Criterion’s FAQ lists monthly and annual plans. PBS’s Documentaries channel is a separate Prime Video channel, so verify both its current fee and whether your account needs an underlying Amazon membership. Netflix pricing is not included here because it changes; check the official local signup page.

Before choosing, check the service’s current device list for your television, streaming player, phone or tablet. PBS lists support for major platforms including Roku and Amazon Fire TV, and Criterion publishes device requirements in its FAQ. Curiosity Stream advertises downloads and simultaneous viewing on different screens; confirm the details that apply to the plan you select. Device support and service availability can differ by location and model.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose Curiosity Stream when a documentary-centered service is the priority and its catalog has the titles or subjects you want.
  • Start with PBS’s free video if its programs interest you; consider Passport or the separately paid Prime Video channel only after checking their catalogs and terms.
  • Choose Netflix if documentaries are one part of a broader streaming mix and its local catalog has the specific films or series you want.
  • Choose Criterion Channel if your interest extends to classic and contemporary film, and its documentary collection and other programming justify the subscription in your country.
