Choose by the play experience, not the label: compare what you do moment to moment, how much your decisions shape the story, the challenge and accessibility options, the tone, and whether the game runs on your platform. “Story-driven” can mean anything from exploration and combat to dialogue-led branching drama.
Start with the moment-to-moment play
Ask what occupies most of the game: exploring, fighting, sneaking, solving puzzles, investigating, or choosing dialogue. Official genre labels tell you how a game is marketed, but they do not establish its story-to-action balance.

- Dustborn: Quantic Dream describes it as a single-player, story-driven action-adventure. The publisher lists PC storefronts, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series platforms, as well as regional ratings. This is a clear example of a game using the label, not a guarantee about how much action or narrative any particular player will prefer. Quantic Dream’s Dustborn page.
- The Last of Us Part I: PlayStation describes a story focused on Joel and Ellie alongside exploration and combat. It is a useful reference point if you want a narrative journey with direct action. PlayStation’s game page.
- TUNIC: The ESRB describes overhead exploration, collecting manual pages, and combat with weapons and magic. It illustrates a more exploration-and-combat-forward action-adventure; the description alone does not establish its story depth. ESRB’s TUNIC rating.
Look for gameplay descriptions or footage that show these activities, rather than relying on a genre tag by itself.

Decide how much story agency you want
A game can have a strong narrative without giving you much control over its direction. If making decisions is important, check whether the store page describes branching paths or different endings, and what those claims actually specify.

- Until Dawn is described by PlayStation as an interactive narrative-driven horror experience with direct character control. Its page says endings vary with the fates of eight playable characters. PlayStation’s Until Dawn page.
- Directive 8020 advertises branching paths, multiple endings, and a feature to rewind decisions. These are the game’s stated features, not proof that every choice will feel consequential to every player. Supermassive Games’ Directive 8020 page.
- Life is Strange: Reunion is described by the ESRB as a story-focused adventure with investigation, puzzles, and dialogue and action choices. ESRB’s Life is Strange: Reunion rating.
If you prefer a more directed journey, look for descriptions centered on a defined protagonist and story rather than assuming that every narrative game is built around branching decisions.
Match the challenge to the way you want to play
Combat, stealth, puzzles, and timed inputs can make a story-focused game demanding in different ways. Check what kind of pressure the game applies and whether its difficulty settings address the challenge that matters to you.

- IMMERSIVE MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE: Step into the role of Alice, a determined young mountaineer climbing Mount Celestine in search of her missing grandfather.
- ESCAPE ROOM STYLE GAMEPLAY: Solve interconnected puzzles, decipher clues, and overcome obstacles in this thrilling card-based escape room experience.

- STORY-DRIVEN PUZZLE EXPERIENCE: Follow narrative clues and your grandfather’s guiding advice as you attempt to conquer a peak that has never been reached before.
- For real-time danger: Directive 8020 describes survival play involving stealth and improvised weapons, alongside its cinematic science-fiction horror story. That points to a game with active threat, not only dialogue and story choices.
- For exploration and combat: TUNIC’s ESRB description mentions weapons and magic as well as exploration; it may suit someone looking for hands-on action, rather than a primarily dialogue-led experience.
- For adjustable challenge: Directive 8020 lists adjustable difficulty. Check the game’s own feature details to learn what can be changed; a difficulty option does not necessarily alter every source of pressure.
Check accessibility against specific needs
Do not treat “accessible” as a single feature. Identify what the player needs, then verify that the exact game and platform support it. Useful details to check include subtitle readability and scope, control remapping, rapid or simultaneous button presses, difficulty settings, pause behavior, screen-reader support, and narration and language options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Until Dawn on PS5 lists fully customizable controls, advanced subtitles, and options that avoid rapid or simultaneous button presses. PlayStation’s Until Dawn accessibility details.
- Directive 8020 lists basic subtitles, adjustable difficulty, and offline pausing. The published details do not establish support for every accessibility feature a particular player may need. Supermassive Games’ Directive 8020 page.
The Accessible Games Initiative’s July 2025 criteria offer good-practice guidance, including making settings available before they are needed and considering narration, languages, repeat and cancel actions, and speed adjustment. Use those dimensions as a checklist, then confirm the game’s actual options. Accessible Games Initiative.

Check tone and regional content ratings
“Story-driven” says nothing about whether a game is gentle, frightening, violent, or intended for adults. Read the content descriptors for your region rather than relying on a rating from another jurisdiction.
- Until Dawn is presented as horror, so its tone may be unsuitable if you want a low-stress narrative experience.
- Life is Strange: Reunion is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB in the United States, with Mild Violence, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Drugs. Ratings and descriptors can differ outside the US. ESRB’s rating and descriptors.
- Dustborn lists separate regional ratings on its publisher page, illustrating why you should check the local rating rather than assume one applies everywhere. Quantic Dream’s Dustborn page.
Confirm platform, edition, and availability before buying
A title’s name does not tell you which versions are sold in your region or what a particular edition includes. Verify the store page for your platform, the edition, and local availability before purchase.
Rank #4
- Number of players: 8
- Brand New in box.
- The product ships with all relevant accessories
- Package Dimensions: 6.4 L x 21.8 H x 14.0 W (centimeters)
For example, PlayStation lists The Last of Us Part I for PS5 and PC, and identifies a PS5 Standard Edition as well as a Blu-ray disc edition. Those are distinct purchase paths; check the relevant listing for your region and platform. PlayStation’s The Last of Us Part I page.
Choose solo or co-op deliberately
Some narrative games offer a group option, but the label alone does not explain how everyone participates. PlayStation says Directive 8020 can be played alone or with friends, with up to five additional players joining the mission. Check the local and multiplayer details to understand what those players do and whether the format suits your group. PlayStation’s Directive 8020 page.
