Keep hemp-derived THC edibles locked away, out of sight and reach of children and pets, and in their original child-resistant package. Store them separately from ordinary food and drinks, reseal the package after every use, and put it straight back into secure storage. If a child may have eaten an edible, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 promptly; do not wait for symptoms.
How to store THC gummies and other edibles at home
- Choose locked storage. Use a location children and pets cannot see or reach, such as a locked child-resistant cabinet or drawer. A medication lock box is another option if your usual storage area is accessible. Keep the edible in its original package inside the lock box.
- Keep the original child-resistant packaging. Do not transfer an edible into an unmarked jar, food container, or snack bag. The package helps identify what the product is, but it is not a substitute for locked storage.
- Separate it from food and drinks. Do not keep THC edibles on a pantry or refrigerator shelf alongside snacks, candy, or beverages. Gummies, chocolates, and cookies can be mistaken for ordinary treats.
- Reseal and put it away immediately. After each use, close the package securely and return it to the locked location. Do not leave it unattended on a counter, table, or bedside surface.
- Make the routine clear to others. Tell other adults, caregivers, and visitors who may handle the product where it belongs and that it must be locked away after use.
- Dispose of remnants securely. Put leftover edible material and packaging in a closed-lid trash container that children and pets cannot reach. Do not leave remnants where they could be found.
Consider avoiding products in packaging that imitates familiar branded foods or snacks; children may mistake copycat packaging for ordinary food. A lock box can add a barrier, but no storage method guarantees that an incident cannot happen.

When deciding, consider who can reach the location, whether it can remain locked, whether the original packaging will stay with the edible, and whether adults can use the lock consistently. The cited guidance does not establish that any one lock style prevents all access.
Why “hemp” does not mean safe for children or pets
Some delta-8 THC products are labeled simply as “hemp,” which can mislead people who associate hemp with non-intoxicating products. The FDA notes that delta-8 products may be sold as gummies, chocolates, cookies, or candies. THC strength can also be difficult to determine and may be unknown or inaccurately labeled, according to the CDC. Treat an intoxicating hemp-derived THC edible like any other cannabis edible when storing it.

Rules for hemp-derived THC, cannabis labeling, and lawful products vary by location. Health Canada’s guidance discusses legal edible products in plain child-resistant packaging with no more than 10 mg THC per package; that is Canadian context, not a universal U.S. product limit. Storage precautions do not establish that a product is legal or confirm its THC amount.
What to do if a child may have eaten an edible
Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 promptly and follow its instructions; do not wait for symptoms. Call 911 for an emergency. If the child may have ingested cannabis, FDA guidance says to seek a physician or emergency department assessment, especially if the child acts unusually or is or feels sick. Do not try to diagnose or manage a suspected poisoning at home.

Possible symptoms include vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, and unsteady coordination. Severe poisoning can involve slowed breathing, seizure, or coma. Keep the package available to share product information with responders, if doing so does not delay getting help.
What to do if a pet may have eaten an edible
Contact a veterinarian, local animal emergency hospital, or animal poison control center immediately. FDA lists possible adverse effects in pets including lethargy, depression, heavy drooling, vomiting, agitation, tremors, and convulsions. Have the package available to tell the professional what the product contains, as long as retrieving it does not delay care.

Poison-center reports and emergency department visits show that accidental exposures are a real safety concern, but the figures below come from different periods, geographies, and reporting systems. They should not be added together or treated as directly comparable rates.

- America’s Poison Centers: 2,578 cannabis edible exposure cases among patients ages 0–19 were reported as of April 30, 2025. Its page also reports 39,497 cases in that age group from 2019 to 2025. These are poison-center managed cases, not a census of all exposures; the national poison data system is based on self-reported calls and cannot fully verify every report.
- FDA reporting historical U.S. poison-center data: From January 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022, poison centers recorded 10,448 single-substance exposure cases involving only THC edible products. FDA reported that 77% involved patients 19 or younger; 65% were unintentional exposures, and 91% of those unintentional exposures involved pediatric patients. This is a defined historical period, not a current annual rate.
- New York State: A 2026 state notice cited nearly 670 emergency department visits for cannabis-related poisonings among children ages 0–17 in 2024. It also cited over 200 calls involving pediatric exposure to edible cannabis in 2025 at Upstate New York Poison Center. These are state and regional figures with different measures, not national totals.
