Define the data, access patterns, correctness and availability requirements, and latency objective first; then compare suitable stores and test them under representative conditions. No storage architecture is automatically best for every low-latency service.
What should you decide before choosing a database?
Start with a written description of the service’s workload and the guarantees it must provide. Latency is only one selection criterion: availability, consistency, partition tolerance, durability, scalability, query capability, and persistence also matter. AWS’s Well-Architected Framework identifies these as requirements that can change which database solution is optimal.

- Data: Is it structured and relational, semi-structured, or unstructured? How much is there, how quickly will it grow, how long must it be retained, and which relationships must be represented?
- Operations: List reads, writes, updates, deletes, joins, and aggregations. Record how often each occurs, the data each operation touches, and how requests are distributed across keys, users, regions, or time.
- Correctness: Define transaction boundaries and whether each read needs a strongly consistent result or can tolerate a stale or eventual one. State durability and recovery expectations.
- Service objectives: Set read and write latency objectives, expected and peak throughput, availability needs, geographic access patterns, and scale expectations.
- Operations: Account for the effort of running, monitoring, securing, backing up, and recovering the store, as well as the cost of the design.
AWS’s archived database-selection guidance emphasizes that access patterns and consistency needs vary between workloads and can change over time. Picking a technology before documenting them risks optimizing for the wrong operations.

Which data model best fits the access pattern?
Use these models as starting points, not speed guarantees. Product behavior, configuration, capacity, workload, and network placement all affect observed latency. AWS and Microsoft Azure’s model-selection guidance supports choosing by data and query fit rather than treating SQL and NoSQL as a simple performance ranking.

| Model | Consider it when | Validate before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Relational | Data is structured and related; operations need transactions, referential integrity, or strong consistency. AWS describes relational databases as designed for ACID transactions and strong data consistency. | Whether the transaction scope, query patterns, and expected scale meet the service’s objectives. |
| Key-value | Common operations can be expressed as direct key lookups and the workload needs high-throughput retrieval. Microsoft lists extreme low-latency key lookups as a model-selection heuristic. | Whether the service can serve its necessary queries without relying on unsupported or awkward access patterns. |
| Document | Data is semi-structured and related fields are commonly retrieved together. | Query flexibility and update-consistency behavior in the specific database. |
| Wide-column | The data and access patterns fit a partitioned, column-family model. | Partition design, query capabilities, and consistency behavior in the selected system. |
| Graph | Relationships between entities are central and graph-oriented queries are useful. | Whether the graph queries are frequent and important enough to justify a specialized store. |
| Time-series | Queries over time windows are central to the workload. | Whether its query model and consistency properties meet the application’s needs. |
| In-memory | Data needs real-time access, or the system is used for caching, session state, or other latency-sensitive work. | Which data is durable, how recovery works, and whether the store is a cache or the system of record. |
Specialized models can make a common operation a better fit, but they do not eliminate the need to check less-common queries and correctness requirements. For example, a direct lookup may be the hot path while reporting, updates, or recovery impose different demands.
Should you add a cache?
A cache can serve frequently reused data from memory, reducing requests to slower underlying storage and lowering load on downstream services. Whether that improves the service as a whole depends on how often the data is reused and whether stale results are acceptable.

Before adding a cache, decide which data is cacheable, how entries expire or are invalidated, how much staleness the service can tolerate, and what the application does on a cache miss or cache failure. Google Cloud’s guidance on graceful degradation notes that a cache-backed fallback can return incomplete or stale data when underlying services are overloaded or unavailable. That behavior may be acceptable for some responses but not for transactional or correctness-critical reads.

One database is a sound choice when it meets the service’s data-model, query, performance, and scale needs. A single-store design can avoid the additional operational work of coordinating multiple systems. It is not a rule that every subsystem must use the same database: AWS guidance recognizes that different subsystems may have different access patterns and use different purpose-built stores.

- Your Data, You Control:No third-party clouds, no hidden access, UGREEN NAS provides a more secure and private data storage solution. It stores data locally on your private hard drives and does automatic backups. Thus, you can keep full control over it. The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.
If you introduce multiple stores, specify who owns each piece of data and how data moves between systems. Decide how updates remain consistent across them, how failures are handled, and which store is authoritative. Do not add a second store solely for a theoretical latency gain; first identify and measure the actual bottleneck, then weigh the measured benefit against the added operational and data-management complexity.
How should you benchmark the candidates?
Benchmark only candidates that can meet the service’s correctness requirements. Keep consistency and durability settings aligned with the intended production design; a faster result obtained by weakening a guarantee the service needs is not a valid comparison.

- Build a representative test. Use realistic data volume and shape, read/write mix, query distribution, concurrency, network placement, and deployment configuration. Include expected and peak workload rather than only a quiet or idealized case.
- Measure the full request path. Record end-to-end service latency as well as time spent in storage operations. Examine the latency distribution and tail behavior, not just an average that can hide slow requests.
- Track capacity and failure behavior. Measure throughput, errors, slow queries, and resource use. Test performance during failover or recovery if those conditions are relevant to the service’s availability objectives.
- Compare equivalent designs. Use the same workload and correctness guarantees for each candidate, and note relevant differences in configuration or network path so they are not mistaken for an inherent property of a database model.
- Revisit the choice when the workload changes. New query patterns, growth, or changed consistency requirements can alter which design is appropriate.
AWS recommends recording measures such as transactions per second, slow queries, and latency introduced by database access. Its current database decision guide describes particular AWS services, but provider descriptions are not independent benchmarks and do not establish the latency your application will achieve. No universal latency number can select the right architecture without a workload and test conditions.
