You can reduce OLED burn-in risk by limiting long periods of bright, high-contrast static content, enabling your monitor’s pixel-shift and logo-dimming protections, and letting its built-in maintenance run as directed. These steps lower risk; they cannot guarantee that burn-in will never occur. Settings and refresh schedules vary by monitor, so use the instructions for your exact model.
Why static content can cause OLED burn-in
Burn-in risk is associated with a bright, high-contrast image remaining in the same place for a prolonged period. Common examples include a fixed desktop taskbar, application borders, channel logos, sports graphics, and game HUDs. Samsung describes burn-in or image retention as a static image becoming a permanent fixture regardless of what is later displayed (Samsung Support).

An ultrawide display does not change this basic risk. A wide desktop can leave persistent elements at the same screen positions just as a smaller display can. The practical aim is to vary or remove static content when the monitor is idle and use the protections built into the display.

Which settings help reduce the risk?
Enable pixel shifting or screen protection
Look in the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) for options such as Pixel Shift, Screen Move, or Screen Protection. These features move the displayed image slightly so static elements do not stay on precisely the same pixels. ASUS says Pixel Shift is enabled by default on the products covered by its guidance and recommends leaving Screen Protection enabled; the menu location depends on the product line (ASUS support guidance).

Use logo dimming when available
Logo brightness adjustment or static-logo detection can lower the brightness of a logo or other detected static element. The feature name, menu location, and default setting vary. For the Samsung models covered by its support page, the setting is under Panel Care; Samsung describes Low as the default and says High can reduce logo brightness further (Samsung Support). Do not assume that path or those labels apply to another monitor.
Set the computer or monitor to go idle
Use a screen saver or set the display to turn off when you leave the computer unattended for a long time. This is especially useful if a desktop, taskbar, application frame, or game HUD would otherwise stay visible. Prefer a screen saver that changes its imagery or a display-off state over leaving a bright fixed screen on.

Let the monitor perform its own maintenance
OLED monitors may run pixel cleaning, screen optimization, or pixel refresh routines, but their triggers, duration, and availability differ by model. Let automatic maintenance run in the monitor’s normal off or standby state when its manufacturer instructs you to do so. Do not cut power or interrupt an active cycle if the manual says to keep the monitor connected.

| Manufacturer and applicable models | Documented maintenance guidance | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS products covered by its support FAQ, including the listed ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM | ASUS recommends Pixel Cleaning every four hours of daily use and describes the process as approximately six minutes. | This is ASUS guidance for the products covered by that FAQ, not a universal OLED schedule. Consult the specific model’s manual or support page. |
| Samsung models covered by its support page | Screen Optimization is described as automatically enabled after four hours or more of cumulative screen time, runs when the monitor is off, and takes about 10–15 minutes. Samsung says not to disconnect power while it runs. | These timings and instructions apply to supported Samsung models, not all OLED ultrawides. |
| Samsung models with Pixel Refresh | Samsung says Pixel Refresh may require the monitor to remain off for more than an hour and notes that the feature is not available on every model. | Check your model’s instructions before relying on this feature or its timing. |
| Dell Alienware AW3423DW and AW3423DWF | Dell documents an automatic Pixel Refresh warning after four hours. Its support guidance describes Pixel Refresh as reducing temporary image retention. | The warning cadence is specific to these Alienware models; it is not a recommendation to manually refresh every OLED monitor. |
Should you run pixel cleaning or refresh manually?
Only follow the procedure and timing specified for your exact monitor. Manufacturers use similar terms for routines that can have quite different durations and triggers. For example, ASUS’s approximately six-minute Pixel Cleaning guidance and Samsung’s more-than-an-hour Pixel Refresh period are not interchangeable instructions.

Avoid repeatedly starting long refresh cycles based on generic advice. If image retention remains visible, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting and support guidance. ASUS advises stopping repeated cleaning once the residual image has disappeared (ASUS support guidance).
Quick care checklist
- Enable Pixel Shift, Screen Move, Screen Protection, or the equivalent option if your monitor offers it.
- Enable logo brightness adjustment or static-logo detection when available.
- Use a screen saver or turn off the display during long unattended periods.
- Let the monitor enter its normal standby or off state so automatic maintenance can run.
- Keep it connected to power during a maintenance cycle if the manufacturer instructs you to.
- Check your exact model’s manual before manually launching a cleaning or refresh routine.
What to check when choosing an OLED ultrawide
If you are comparing models, look for documented pixel shifting, static-logo dimming, and clear instructions for automatic maintenance or user-started refresh. Check whether the manufacturer says a protection feature is enabled by default and how it handles interruptions. Also read the warranty wording for your country: the available guidance here does not establish current burn-in warranty coverage for every model or region. Protection features reduce risk, but none is a promise that burn-in cannot happen.
