Then check that the work surface, equipment capacity, and monitor position suit your workspace. Your height alone does not determine an exact desk setting: footwear, posture, keyboard position, and task all matter.
What standing desk height do you need?
For computer work, start with your standing elbow height: stand naturally in the shoes you usually wear, relax your shoulders, and bend your elbows comfortably. Adjust where the keyboard and mouse would sit until your forearms are roughly level without shrugging or reaching. OSHA’s guidance is to set the keyboard at about elbow height; its neutral-position guidance describes elbows close to the body and bent 90–120 degrees. Use that position as a personal fit check, not a height chart. The OSHA figures below are general purchasing-guide ranges for computer keyboard work, not a conversion from a person’s stature to an exact desktop setting.

These are general guidance measurements, not a guarantee of comfort or a product certification. Check that the desk’s actual usable range can place your keyboard at your measured position. A desk that reaches a published range may still be a poor fit for your posture or setup.

Check the seated setting too
With your feet supported and shoulders relaxed, compare the desk’s lowest usable keyboard setting with your seated elbow position. Do not choose only by the desk’s maximum height. If a fixed-height surface cannot fit your seated keyboard position, OSHA notes that a keyboard tray may be necessary; with an adjustable desk, confirm that its low setting works for you before buying.
Will the desk fit your workspace?
Measure the usable desktop width and depth, including the space needed for your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and items you keep close at hand. Leave room to use the input devices without reaching around equipment. Check the monitor’s position separately from the keyboard height: a comfortable keyboard setting does not automatically put the screen at a comfortable viewing height.

- Place the monitor directly in front of you. OSHA recommends at least 20 inches between your eyes and the screen; its monitor guidance gives a preferred viewing distance of 20–40 inches. OSHA monitor guidance.
- Check that the monitor’s top line can sit at or below eye level. CCOHS describes a sit/stand viewing position between horizontal and 35 degrees below. Adjust the screen so you can view it without tilting your head uncomfortably.
- Confirm that the screen remains at a suitable distance and height when you change the desk position. A monitor arm is an optional way to gain positioning flexibility if the desk or monitor stand cannot provide it.
- Check the combined size and weight of your monitor, computer, and accessories against the manufacturer’s stated capacity. This is particularly important with a tabletop sit-stand converter; OSHA advises buyers to account for equipment size, weight, and quantity.
- Make sure cables, storage, and the room layout will not obstruct raising or lowering the desk, and leave enough space to change posture.
How to compare standing desks
Compare each candidate against your measured setup rather than relying on a product’s advertised maximum height or surface area alone.

Check the lowest and highest usable settings.
- Desktop dimensions: Is there enough usable depth for your monitor at a comfortable distance, along with space for your keyboard, mouse, and regular work items?
- Equipment capacity: Is the combined load and equipment quantity within the manufacturer’s stated limits? Include monitors and accessories, not just the computer.
- Monitor positioning: Can the display stay in front of you at a comfortable height and distance as the desk moves? Consider an adjustable monitor arm only if the available stand or desk positioning is insufficient.
- Workspace compatibility: Can the desk move freely without cable or room-layout interference, and is there room to work in both positions?
- Sitting fit: Does the desk lower enough for your seated keyboard position, or will you need an additional adjustment such as a keyboard tray?
How to use a sit-stand desk comfortably
Plan to change positions rather than treating standing as a replacement for sitting. CCOHS recommends frequent changes in body position, including alternating between sitting and standing, to help avoid fatigue. The guidance cited here does not establish one universal timed schedule.
