To extend rechargeable-battery life, avoid routinely draining cells to empty, keep them away from excess heat, and use a charger made for their chemistry. For longer storage, keep lithium-ion batteries partially charged in a cool, dry place; remove NiMH cells from devices that may continue drawing power, and avoid leaving them on charge after they are full. Exact limits vary by battery and device, so follow the maker’s instructions where available.
Start with the battery chemistry
“Rechargeable battery” covers chemistries with different charging requirements. Lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops and many other devices use different charging methods from nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AA and AAA cells. Do not assume a charger intended for one chemistry is suitable for another. Use the charging system supplied with the device or one the battery maker specifies.

For removable cells, check both the chemistry and cell size against the charger’s manual. A charger’s speed is not the only relevant feature: charge-completion detection and cutoff help prevent excessive time on charge. How should you charge rechargeable batteries?
Lithium-ion batteries
You can top up a lithium-ion battery rather than waiting for it to run flat. Battery University says partial charging is acceptable and that deep discharge wears batteries. Avoid deliberately draining the battery before charging, and limit heat during charging. The sources do not establish a single daily charge percentage that applies to every phone, laptop or other Li-ion device; use the device maker’s charging settings and instructions. NiMH batteries
Charge NiMH cells only in a charger designed for NiMH. Sustained overcharge can shorten their life, so use a charger that detects when charging is complete and controls or stops current rather than leaving cells charging indefinitely. Energizer’s 2018 NiMH handbook identifies charge control and minimizing overcharge exposure, duration and rate as important factors. It gives an expected life of two to five years for NiMH batteries, but that figure is specific to its handbook and depends on use and care; it is not a lifespan guarantee for all rechargeable batteries. What charge should you store batteries at?
Lithium-ion: store partially charged
For Li-ion batteries kept out of use for an extended period, Battery University recommends about 40% state of charge in a cool, dry place. This is general technical guidance from an article last updated on October 27, 2021, not a universal manufacturer setting for every device. Do not store a Li-ion battery fully discharged: self-discharge can lower its charge further. If the device maker specifies a different storage level or procedure, follow that instruction. NiMH: prevent prolonged drain
For NiMH cells, Battery University’s general storage advice emphasizes a cool, dry location; it treats storage charge level as less critical than for Li-ion. Energizer’s consumer-care guidance recommends recharging rechargeable batteries at least every 6–9 months and advises against leaving them discharged or unused for extended periods. If a device can draw standby current while switched off, remove NiMH cells before extended storage. Energizer warns that continued drain can over-discharge cells and contribute to leakage or corrosion in the device. Store loose cells so their terminals cannot contact metal objects.
Temperature and basic safety
Temperature affects both charging and storage. Energizer recommends charging at room temperature—68°F to 72°F. Battery University warns against charging ordinary consumer Li-ion batteries below 0°C/32°F because lithium plating can permanently degrade performance and safety; it notes that specialty cold-charge cells exist. The best routine is chemistry-specific: partial top-ups rather than deliberate deep discharge for Li-ion, and controlled charging plus protection from parasitic drain for NiMH.
