Choose a Spanish-learning app by checking two things first: whether it can place you near the right starting level, and whether its lesson format fits the time you can actually study. Then compare course scope, Spanish variety and the speaking practice you want. App descriptions can help you compare features, but they cannot promise how quickly you will progress.
Start with your current Spanish level
If you are new to Spanish, begin at the introductory level. If you have studied before, take a placement test rather than assuming you must start from the beginning. Check whether you can change the recommended level or retake the test if it does not match what you can understand and use.

- Babbel: Its Spanish placement quiz can be taken again, and learners can change courses. Babbel explains its placement quiz.
- Busuu: The provider says its placement test takes five minutes and suggests a level. It does not mark earlier lessons as completed, so a placement result does not automatically skip those lessons. See Busuu’s placement-test details.
- Duolingo: Its score system maps score bands to CEFR descriptions, but the score is a platform progress guide, not a separately administered CEFR exam. Duolingo describes its score alignment.
Use a test result as a starting point, not a verdict. Try a lesson at the suggested level and see whether you can follow its instructions and handle the exercises without either constant guessing or effortless repetition.

Providers describe their course coverage using CEFR levels, but their product descriptions are not equivalent independent proficiency certifications. The highest level listed can help you decide whether an app’s stated scope matches your goals; it does not establish that finishing the course will certify your ability.
#1 Best Overall
| App | Stated Spanish course scope | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Babbel | A1 to C1 | Its Spanish page lists Spanish for Mexico and Spain. Babbel Spanish course details. |
| Busuu | Spanish certificates cover A1 to C1 | Certificates are available to Premium learners. Busuu certificate details. |
| Duolingo | The most advanced content in its score-aligned courses reaches B2 | This describes the most developed courses, not a separate exam result for every learner. Duolingo Score overview. |
If your goal is a specific level, look beyond the label: check which lessons and skills the provider includes at that level, and whether the material is available in the app version you plan to use.
Match lesson length to your real schedule
A short session is useful only if you can make it a regular habit. Babbel says a typical lesson takes about six minutes. Duolingo promotes Spanish study in five minutes a day and describes its lessons as bite-sized. These are provider descriptions of lesson format, not evidence that a learner will reach a particular level in that time.
Before choosing, be realistic about the time you can reliably protect. If you have a few minutes between other tasks, short lessons may be easier to fit in. If your available study time comes in longer blocks, look for a course structure that gives you enough practice to make those sessions worthwhile. Check the current app to see how lessons are organized and whether you can pause and return easily.

- Duolingo: Its Spanish course page promotes learning in five minutes a day and short lessons.
Choose the practice that fits your goals
Not every learner needs the same balance of reading, listening, speaking and structured exercises. If speaking is a priority, check exactly how an app lets you practise instead of assuming that completing standard lessons provides conversation practice.

Busuu describes Spanish Conversations in its course timeline, with scenarios labeled by required CEFR level and generative AI practice. Confirm in the current app whether the feature is available to you and whether its format meets your speaking needs. Busuu explains its Conversations feature.
For any app, check whether its exercises give you the kind of practice you are seeking: listening to spoken Spanish, producing your own speech, or working through structured lessons. A feature label alone does not show how well it will suit your goals.

Consider which Spanish variety you want to learn
If you have a preference for regional Spanish, check the course before signing up. Babbel lists Spanish for Mexico and Spanish for Spain. The reviewed product information does not establish comparable variety options for Busuu or Duolingo, so check their current course settings rather than assuming a particular regional option is available.
Check availability and terms before committing
Feature access and course details can vary, so verify what is currently offered in your country and on your device platform. In particular, check whether a desired feature requires a paid tier; Busuu states that Spanish certificates are a Premium benefit. Compare current prices on each provider’s checkout page before deciding, since prices and availability can differ by market and plan.

A practical way to make your choice
- Decide what you need: Write down your current level, your target and whether speaking, listening or a guided course matters most.
- Take a placement test if you know some Spanish: Check whether you can adjust the level or retake the test if the recommendation feels wrong.
- Check the stated course range: Make sure the provider’s documented coverage reaches the level you want, while treating CEFR labels as product descriptions rather than independent certification.
- Try a typical lesson: See whether its length and format fit your real schedule, not an idealized routine.
- Verify the details that affect your decision: Confirm regional variety, speaking features, paid-tier requirements, and current availability and price in your country and on your device.
There is no independent, comparable evidence in the reviewed provider materials showing how long a typical learner takes to reach a Spanish level with these apps. Choose on fit and features, not on a universal promise of fluency in a set number of days.
